Book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Gray M'Kendrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2: General Physiology Although this work has been modelled to some extent on my "Outlines of Physiology," now out of print, it is essentially a new book, and as it aims at giving a more detailed account of the subject, the title of "Outlines of Physiology" has been abandoned for that of a "d104 Book of Physiology." I have not endeavoured to give anything like an encyclopaedic account of the modern researches that have built up the physiological science of the present time, but rather to weave into a consecutive narrative the main facts and principles of physiology, as these present themselves to my mind, after nearly eighteen years of experience as a teacher of the science. Probably no science is advancing with greater rapidity, if one may form an opinion from the large number of original papers that are announced, month by month, and from the large number of investigators in the physiological laboratories of the Continent, of America, and of our own country. Thus it is year by year becoming more difficult for a teacher to keep abreast of the wave of progress, and still more difficult to assimilate the new facts and to incorporate them with his previous knowledge. Each teacher will also view the subject more especially according to his prodilections for the morphological, the chemical, or the physical side of the science, and it is not easy in the preparation of such a work as this to be impartial and to present the science in all its completeness to the reader. Book A Text Book of Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Classic Reprint written by Isaac Ott and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physiology This book has been written at the solicitation of students who have attended my lectures for the past eight years. The aim has not been to write a treatise on the subject, but rather an elementary work containing the chief facts of physiology which are necessary to the student who wishes to apply them in the practice of his profession. Physiology is the basis of medicine, and its understanding is requisite to the study of pathology. With this idea in mind, small space has been given to the subject of electro-physiology. The technique of the laboratory has been omitted for similar reasons. In the preparation of this book it was found impossible to give due credit to all the sources from which information has been derived. The illustrations have been selected from various authorities, to whom credit has been given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cotton Plant in Egypt Studies in Physiology and Genetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cotton Plant in Egypt Studies in Physiology and Genetics Classic Reprint written by W. Lawrence Balls and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton Plant in Egypt Studies in Physiology and Genetics This book has been written with the purpose of abstracting the results of a series of researches made upon cotton plants in Egypt, which investigations, though diverse, were connected by the desire to know all that could be learned about the plant itself. Portions of these inquiries have appeared in various journals, but most of the material here utilised has not yet been published. Where it may appear to the reader that a conclusion necessitates much fuller data than is placed before him, I can only ask his clemency until such time as a fuller monograph shall be written. Book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Maddock Bayliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of General Physiology IN the preparation of courses of lectures dealing with various physiological processes I have found considerable difficulty, and spent much time, in the extraction from books and original papers, many of them not biological, of material of fundamental importance in the proper treatment of the subject. The mechanism of reactions in heterogeneous systems may be mentioned. It seemed to me, therefore, that the results of this labour might be of use to others, whose work does not allow them sufficient time to read articles which do not appear to bear upon their particular domain of science. In arranging these facts, however, it became manifest that a somewhat wider treatment would be of more value, so that the book might be of service to all desiring a general, elementary, treatment of what may be called abstract physiology, as distinct from the applied physiology required by the agricultural, medical, or veterinary student for the purpose of his profession. In extenuation of my conduct in producing a work on physiology for the use, as I venture to hope, of all those who have any interest in science, I should like to quote a few words by Huxley to be found in his address, On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences (huxley, 1902-1903, p. 59 - see Bibliography). He gives an answer to the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Human Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Furneaux and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology This work is intended for those who desire an easy introduction to die study of the Human Frame. The matter embraces those parts of the subject which arc contained in the Elementary Syllabus of the Science and Art Department, but is not confined strictly within those limits. A short chapter on the Ear has been added (thus completing the outline of the organs of special sense), and also another on the Larynx and the Voice. And again, although the students working according to this Syllabus are not required to obtain any 'information upon points of structure needing the use of the compound microscope' with the exception of the characters of the corpuscles of the blood, yet in many other instances such information has been given. It is eminently desirable that the student should avail himself of every opportunity of making his study thoroughly practical. The author therefore has given, here and there, many hints as to how he should proceed in easy dissections; and has introduced a number of simple experiments, so that the knowledge gained may be of a sound character. It is too often felt that such practical and experimental methods of acquiring information are roundabout and tedious; but the author's experience has taught him to affirm that it is the readiest, surest, and certainly the most pleasant way of attaining the end in view. Dr. Jones said in the preface to the first edition This volume has been prepared with a view of presenting, in as convenient form as possible, the essential facts of modern physiology as related to the practice of medicine. This object has been kept in mind in the preparation of the third edition. In this edition the Introduction, the chapters on The Cell, The Elementary Tissues and on the Blood have been entirely rewritten and new illustrations added. A new chapter, with illustrations, on The Physiological Characteristics of Muscle, has been added. The chapter on Secretion has been rearranged. New subject matter has been added to the chapter on The Physiology of Digestion and Absorption. Other minor changes have been made throughout the book where such were deemed advisable. Book Mendel s Principles of Heredity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mendel s Principles of Heredity Classic Reprint written by William Bateson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mendel's Principles of Heredity Much and varied assistance has been given me by many persons. Such help on special points has been acknowledged in the text, but a fuller and more prominent acknowledgment is due to my colleagues. Without their cooperation there would have been, so far as Cambridge is concerned, but meagre contributions to record. In the early days of Mendelism, and before, Miss E. R. Saunderscollaborated with me. A beautiful series of results, especially relating to the heredity of Stocks has been the fruit Of her labours exclusively. Not only have these results greatly advanced our knowledge of genetic pheno mena, but I think that at a time when Mendelism was, in England at least, regarded with suspicion, the Obvious precision of her work and the persistence of her advocacy did much to convince the scientific world of the reality of our assertions. In 1904 I had the good fortune to gain Mr R. C. Punnett as a partner. Since that date we have worked in close collaboration, and the work that we have thus done has been in every sense a joint product, both as regards design, execution, and interpretation of results. Though for the presentation of the views contained in this book I am solely responsible, those that apply to the subjects of our own work are often his, or have been arrived at in consequence of interchange of ideas with him. On some points of general physiology I have received useful suggestions and criticism from Mr F. F. Blackman, and in this respect I am also especially beholden to Miss F. M. Durham. In its title, we adopted the term Physiological Anatomy, in pre ference to the older one of General, or the later one of Histological, as being more comprehensive than either, and as denoting precisely that kind of anatomy, a knowledge of which is especially required for the investigation of those subjects which ought to come under consideration in a. Book Root Physiology from Gene to Function

Download or read book Root Physiology from Gene to Function written by Hans Lambers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, enormous progress has been made on the physiology of plant roots, including on a wide range of molecular aspects. Much of that progress has been captured in the chapters of this book. Breakthroughs have been made possible through integration of molecular and whole-plant aspects. The classical boundaries between physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology have vanished. There has been a strong focus on a limited number of model species, including Arabidopsis thaliana. That focus has allowed greater insight into the significance of specific genes for plant development and functioning. However, many species are very different from A. thaliana, in that they are mycorrhizal, develop a symbiosis with N2-fixing microsymbionts, or have other specialised root structures. Also, some have a much greater capacity to resist extreme environments, such as soil acidity, salinity, flooding or heavy-metal toxicities, due to specific adaptations. Research on species other than A. thaliana is therefore pivotal, to develop new knowledge in plant sciences in a comprehensive manner. This fundamental new knowledge can be the basis for important applications in, e.g., agriculture and plant conservation. Although significant progress has been made, much remains to be learnt. It is envisaged that discoveries made in the recent past will likely lead to major breakthroughs in the next decade.

Book Taboo and Genetics

Download or read book Taboo and Genetics written by M. M. Knight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taboo and Genetics: A Study of the Biological, Sociological and Psychological Foundation of the Family is the work of authors M.M Knight, Iva Lowther Peters, and Phyllis Blanchard. This book is a study of sex from the perspective of the three different scientific fields referred to in its title. The format of Taboo and Genetics is fairly straightforward. The book is divided into three parts, opening with the work of Dr. M.M. Knight, a biologist. Titled The New Biology and the Sex Problem in Society this portion of the book tackles sex from a mostly biological perspective, describing what acts are classified as sex, and exploring sex across the animal kingdom in order to draw comparisons to humans. Part two, The Institutionalized Sex Taboo, is the work of Dr. Iva Lowther Peters, and approaches the subject sociologically. Peters' section primarily discusses a woman's role in sex culture, including a history of how the sexuality of women has been interpreted throughout the ages. The book concludes with the work of Dr. Phyllis Blanchard, a psychologist. Blanchard explores modern sexuality from a psychological perspective, focusing on the sometimes unconscious sexual impulses of men and women. Taboo and Genetics is an interesting read and one that provides a variety of perspectives on sexuality. The authors take a controversial stance on some issues, including race and sexuality, but provide the reader with some historical perspective on how the issues discussed were interpreted by medical professionals at the time of writing. Attitudes towards sex have changed a great deal in recent times, and this book is certainly evidence of that. If you are a student or professional involved in sexual health, Taboo and Genetics is a worthwhile read. The book offers three different perspectives on sexuality, and provides the reader with a wealth of information on the history of the study of sex.
