Book Root Physiology from Gene to Function

Download or read book Root Physiology from Gene to Function written by Hans Lambers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, enormous progress has been made on the physiology of plant roots, including on a wide range of molecular aspects. Much of that progress has been captured in the chapters of this book. Breakthroughs have been made possible through integration of molecular and whole-plant aspects. The classical boundaries between physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology have vanished. There has been a strong focus on a limited number of model species, including Arabidopsis thaliana. That focus has allowed greater insight into the significance of specific genes for plant development and functioning. However, many species are very different from A. thaliana, in that they are mycorrhizal, develop a symbiosis with N2-fixing microsymbionts, or have other specialised root structures. Also, some have a much greater capacity to resist extreme environments, such as soil acidity, salinity, flooding or heavy-metal toxicities, due to specific adaptations. Research on species other than A. thaliana is therefore pivotal, to develop new knowledge in plant sciences in a comprehensive manner. This fundamental new knowledge can be the basis for important applications in, e.g., agriculture and plant conservation. Although significant progress has been made, much remains to be learnt. It is envisaged that discoveries made in the recent past will likely lead to major breakthroughs in the next decade.

Book Salinity and Drought Stress in Plants Understanding Physiological Biochemical and Molecular Responses

Download or read book Salinity and Drought Stress in Plants Understanding Physiological Biochemical and Molecular Responses written by Muhammad Waseem and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought and salinity are two of the foremost environmental factors which restrict plant growth and yield in several regions of the world, especially in arid and semi‐arid regions. Due to global climate change, drought and salinity are predicted to become more widespread and eventually result in reduced plant growth and productivity in numerous plant species. Exposure of plants to extreme drought or salt stress ceases plant growth, while plants exposed to moderate stress generally show a slight change in their growth performance. Scientists are facing the challenging task of producing 70% more food to feed an additional 2.3 billion people by 2050. Therefore, it is imperative to develop stress-resilient crops with better yield under drought and salt stress to meet the food requirements of upcoming generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the latest information on almond genomics and transcriptomics, with a particular focus on cutting-edge findings, tools, and strategies employed in genome sequencing and analysis with regard to the most important agronomic traits. Cultivated almond [(Prunus dulcis (Miller) D. A. Webb, syn. Prunus amygdalus Batsch., Amygdalus communis L., Amygdalus dulcis Mill.)] is a tree crop producing seeds of great economic interest, and adapted to hot and dry climates. Domesticated in Southeast Asia, its small diploid genome and phenotypic diversity make it an ideal model to complement genomics studies on peach, generally considered to be the reference Prunus species. Both represent consanguineous species that evolved in two distinct environments: warmer and more humid in the case of peach, and colder and xerophytic for almond. The advent of affordable whole-genome sequencing, in combination with existing Prunus functional genomics data, has now made it possible to leverage the novel diversity found in almond, providing an unmatched resource for the genetic improvement of this species.

With Grapevine in a Changing Environment, readers will benefit from a comprehensive and updated coverage on the intricate grapevine defense mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stress and on the new generation techniques that may be ultimately used to implement appropriate strategies aimed at the production and selection of more adapted genotypes. The book also provides valuable references in this research area and original data from several laboratories worldwide. Written by 63 international experts on grapevine ecophysiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, the book is a reference for a wide audience with different backgrounds, from plant physiologists, biochemists and graduate and post-graduate students, to viticulturists and enologists.

Book Grapevine Rootstock scion Interactions and Influence on Ripening Periods and the Initiation of Senescence

Download or read book Grapevine Rootstock scion Interactions and Influence on Ripening Periods and the Initiation of Senescence written by Jean Catherine Dodson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pest and disease pressures have traditionally driven the use of grapevine rootstocks in California. However, competing demands on the State’s water resources from an ever-increasing population and uncertainty of the supply under a changing climate mean that the water available for agriculture will continue to diminish. This inevitability has resulted in an increased interest in how rootstock characteristics influence scion growth and yield, and the impact rootstock parentage and genetics have on controlling these traits. This research consisted of three separate studies. The initial study examined 19 rootstocks on eight different field sites to determine rootstock impact on yields and pruning weights. The study spanned 11 years and general rootstock trends on yield and pruning weights were documented across the different soil types. Each field trial was positioned within a larger commercially operated winegrape vineyard of the same scion cultivar. Yield results were obtained by counting and weighing clusters at the time of harvest. Pruning weights were taken in winter after a professional crew pruned to normal standards for the given trellis and site characteristics. The results found that rootstocks group based on soil-based factors such as soil depth and water holding capacity, soil texture, soil chemistry and pathogen and pest pressure. This study laid the foundation for an examination of rootstock influence on scion phenological features examined in the second and third portion of this research. The objective of the second study was to determine the role that two grapevine rootstocks (110R and 101-14 MGT) have on scion phenology; specifically on leaf senescence and its influence on fruit ripening. To evaluate and classify rootstock influence on scion growth, development and senescence field trials were evaluated at three locations and measured: scion internode and stem diameter above the second cluster; cluster number; yield and pruning weight per vine; photon flux density (PFD) penetration into the cluster zone; abscisic acid accumulation in the leaves; and vine balance. The results suggest that 101-14 MGT shortens the length of the growing season compared to 110R based on the timing of senescence. 110R and 101-14 MGT also had a significant influence on scion growth characteristics. Vines grafted on 110R tended to have lower PFD in the cluster zone, more clusters, greater pruning and yield weights per vine in comparison to scions grafted on 101-14 MGT. Scions grated on 110R also had greater shoot internode lengths and stem diameters above the second cluster than those on 101-14 MGT. In the final study, a time efficient and cost effective container-based assay was developed to screen existing and newly bred rootstocks for their influence on the timing of leaf senescence timing and scion dormancy. A leaf senescence indexing guide was developed by evaluating rootstocks in two container-based shadehouse studies. The initial container assay was conducted over the course of two years and was established from dormant cuttings. It evaluated five commonly used rootstocks (101-14 MGT, 110R, 420A, Riparia Gloire, St. George), un-grafted and grafted with Cabernet Sauvignon under deficit and non-deficit irrigation regimes. A second container assay was established from herbaceous cuttings from a Ramsey (Vitis candicans x V. rupestris) x Riparia Gloire (V. riparia) population. These plants were un-grafted and exposed to deficit irrigation. In addition to scoring senescence, midday leaf water potential and stomatal conductance data were taken. Results from this study found that container assays can be successfully used to determine differences in senescence timing and are more easily observed under deficit irrigation. These results found that leaf senescence segregates in this population and identified selections with very early senescence, 33 and 105, and selections with late senescence, 56, 97 and 106.

Book Environmental Physiological and Chemical Controls of Adventitious Rooting in Cuttings

Download or read book Environmental Physiological and Chemical Controls of Adventitious Rooting in Cuttings written by Azamal Husen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental, Physiological and Chemical Controls of Adventitious Rooting in Cuttings provides a review of the environmental, physiological and chemical controls of adventitious rooting in cuttings obtained from plants. In plants, adventitious roots, which are highly useful for vegetative propagation (or clonal propagation) are produced mainly from leaves, hypocotyls, stems or shoots. Vegetative propagation may occur naturally by using propagules such as roots, underground and aerial stems, leaves, buds and bulbils. It may also be done artificially through regenerative organs (rhizomes, bulbs, and corms) and by utilizing specialized methods, like cutting, grafting and layering. This book covers the latest tactics surrounding these processes. As a plethora of factors affect the adventitious rooting of cuttings, adding to the complexity of the phenomenon. The main factors which control adventitious root formation are types of cuttings, presence of leaf area on cuttings, types of hormones and their concentration, duration of hormonal treatment (quick dip, long soak, dry dip, spray dip, or total immerse method), maturation (juvenile or mature), genotype, explant position, and more, all of which are discussed here. Provides a comprehensive and exclusive book on the environmental, physiological and chemical factors associated with adventitious root formation in cutting, with up-to-date literature and lucid illustrations Presents a multidimensional approach and a broad range of explanation on adventitious root formation associated with mature and juvenile cutting Discusses a number of molecular, histological and physiological markers associated with adventitious root formation in numerous plant species Elaborates on how external and internal factors control the cell/tissue initiation, differentiation and overall adventitious root formation in cutting
