It was born when the Rocky Mountains were first uplifted to the sky, when their lofty peaks, collecting the moisture of the storms, sent streams dashing down to the plains below. Upon the western slope of the mountains a number of these streams united in one great river, which wound here and there, seeking the easiest route across the plateau to the Gulf of California. At first the banks of the river were low, and its course was easily turned one way or another. From the base of the mountains to the level of the ocean there is a fall of more than a mile, so that the river ran swiftly and was not long in making for itself a definite channel. Many thousands of years passed. America was discovered. The Spaniards conquered Mexico and sent expeditions northward in search of the cities of Cibola, where it was said that gold and silver were abundant. One of these parties is reported to have reached a mighty canon, into which it was impossible to descend. The canon was so deep that rocks standing in the bottom, which were in reality higher than the Seville cathedral, appeared no taller than a man. The need for such a book is keenly felt, since students in the professional schools of forestry have little time for the study of original sources of material in a subject which is not forestry but the basis of forestry. On the other hand, such general sources as are available are both too brief and too elementary for the somewhat comprehensive requirements of the American forester. In preparing this book I have attempted to steer a middle course be tween that purely descriptive writing with which the forester is too often satisfied, and that altogether explanatory writing which the techni cal physiographer is inclined to regard as the real substance of a scientific book. The descriptive portions are intentionally rather comprehensive, for the relief and not the explanation of it is of immediate value to the forester, no matter how important the explanation may be in assisting him to appreciate and remember the relief. A chief concern has been the reduction of geologic data to a minimum. A geologic statement frequently runs off into so many consequences that the most important of these almost force one to a more extended and complex discussion than the forester, a lay student of geologic and geographic science, can assimi late. Emphatically, some geologic data are essential, but only in so far as they have an immediate physiographic bearing. The other class of manuals presumes too much on the previous knowledge and experience of the pupil for the early years of the school. This gap between the two kinds of manuals appears to be filled better by Professor Merrill's book than by any other that I have seen. It likewise is wider in its scope and covers the Whole field of Physical Geography more thoroughly than any other.
