Book Technological Development and Science in the Industrial Age

Download or read book Technological Development and Science in the Industrial Age written by P. Kroes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians and philosophers of technology are searching for new approaches to the study of the interaction between science and technology. New conceptual frameworks are necessary since the idea that technology is simply applied science is nothing short of a myth. The papers contained in this volume deal primarily with cognitive and social aspects of the science-technology issue. One of the most salient features of these papers is that they show a major methodological shift in studying the interaction between science and technology. Discussions of the science-technology issue have long been dominated by the demarcartion problem and related semantic issues about the notions `science' and `technology', and the `technology is applied science' thesis. Instead of general `global' interpretation schemes and models of the interaction between science and technology, detailed empirical case studies of cognitive and institutional connections between `science' and `technology' constitute the hard core of this book. The book will be of interest to philosophers of science, historians and philosophers of technology and science and sociologists of science.

Download or read book Practical Matter written by Margaret C. Jacob and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Jacob and Larry Stewart examine the profound transformation that began in 1687. From the year when Newton published his Principia to the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851, science gradually became central to Western thought and economic development. The book aims at a general audience and examines how, despite powerful opposition on the Continent, a Newtonian understanding gained acceptance and practical application. By the mid-eighteenth century the new science had achieved ascendancy, and the race was on to apply Newtonian mechanics to industry and manufacturing. They end the story with the temple to scientific and technological progress that was the Crystal Palace exhibition. Choosing their examples carefully, Jacob and Stewart show that there was nothing preordained or inevitable about the centrality awarded to science. "It is easy to forget that science might have been stillborn, or remained the esoteric knowledge of court elites. Instead, for better and for worse, science became a centerpiece of Western culture."

Book Condensed Matter and Materials Physics

Download or read book Condensed Matter and Materials Physics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-01-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of transistors, the integrated circuit, liquid-crystal displays, and even DVD players can be traced back to fundamental research pioneered in the field of condensed-matter and materials physics (CMPP). The United States has been a leader in the field, but that status is now in jeopardy. Condensed-Matter and Materials Physics, part of the Physics 2010 decadal survey project, assesses the present state of the field in the United States, examines possible directions for the 21st century, offers a set of scientific challenges for American researchers to tackle, and makes recommendations for effective spending of federal funds. This book maintains that the field of CMPP is certain to be principle to both scientific and economic advances over the next decade and the lack of an achievable plan would leave the United States behind. This book's discussion of the intellectual and technological challenges of the coming decade centers around six grand challenges concerning energy demand, the physics of life, information technology, nanotechnology, complex phenomena, and behavior far from equilibrium. Policy makers, university administrators, industry research and development executives dependent upon developments in CMPP, and scientists working in the field will find this book of interest.

Book Using Industrial Patronage to Manage Growth and Change in American Physics

Download or read book Using Industrial Patronage to Manage Growth and Change in American Physics written by Tom Scheiding and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the interwar period both the quantity and quality of scholarly research in the sciences conducted within the United States increased dramatically. Besides an expansion in the scale of research produced and change in its quality, there was a rapid commercialization of research in the sciences. An essential ingredient to making these changes possible in the sciences was an efficient and scalable scholarly society. These trends were all perhaps most evident in the discipline of physics. Creating such a scholarly society requires funding and oversight with both being provided by the Chemical Foundation. The interaction between the Chemical Foundation and physicists, mediated through the formation of the American Institute of Physics, yielded a scholarly community that embraced an academic-industrial symbiosis and set the stage for a discipline able to accommodate dramatic growth and change after WW II. This discussion not only reveals the extent to which industry indirectly imposed itself through the Chemical Foundation on a scholarly society previously considered the product of a theoretical community, but also expands the limited understanding we have of the Chemical Foundation in an era of shifting funding priorities, motivations, and actors.
