Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual This manual has been adapted particularly to the present equipment and requirements of a course in experimental physics in Harvard College known as Physics C. This course is accompanied by a series of illustrated lectures to the class as a whole, two each Week, and one hour each week of recitation and problem work to the class in small sections. A knowledge of algebra and plane geometry, and a slight acquaintance with the notation of trigonometry are necessary. Familiarity with the use of logarithms or the slide rule is strongly recommended for reducing the labor of computation. The course should properly be preceded by a more elementary course in physics. Small type has been used for a few descriptive and explanatory sections of the text which are not immediate parts of the specific directions of the experiments. The small type does not, however, signify relative unimportance of the material. Introductory remarks setting forth the application of the principles involved precede each experiment or each group of experiments involving the same principles. In writing this manual, some material, for which much indebtedness is expressed, has been freely taken from Professor Sabine's Laboratory Course in Physical Measurements. For two reasons a revision of this book has become necessary. The distribution of time in Physics C has been so altered that the laboratory work now occupies a shorter time than formerly, and the exercises have therefore become unduly long. It is also desirable to include a wider variety of experiments in the manual, so as to fit the somewhat different needs of the various classes of students who use it. In the course of the revision many experiments have been altered, where experience has shown this to be advantageous, or on account of changes in the apparatus. The physics course in a modern high school should be organized according to the recognized function of education in a democratic society. It should include units of study which the masses of boys and girls of high school age are able to pursue with profit. It should proceed toward an organization of practical situations, activities, and phenomena, the value of which will be recognized and approved by teachers, students, parents, administrators of education, and others who are responsible for the work which boys and girls do in the high school. It is intended that these experiments should form part of a physics course which includes class discussions and demonstrations. They were devised and used for several years in a beginners' course in practical physics. They differ from the conventional physics laboratory experiments in that they deal more directly with the mechanisms and appliances of everyday experience. The materials and procedure have been worked out in detail in order to aid the busy science teacher in the laborious task of placing practical laboratory study upon a workable basis. A large list of projects and problems is offered. In a year's course of thirty-six to forty weeks perhaps not more than half of the ninety-five experiments can be performed. The complete list represents two years' work unless more time is assigned to laboratory study than is the custom. But sooner or later he finds that this business of teaching young people physics by means of laboratory exercises is a very difficult problem. No amount of costly apparatus or elaborate laboratory directions will produce that mental activity about physical phenomena that we all want to stimulate in our students. Doubtless the ideal method would be for each teacher to make his own laboratory manual, and many have done so. This book is the result of one teacher's attempt to get together a set of experiments that represent a well-balanced course. The aim has been to make the directions so clear and concise that the average boy or girl, who already has in mind a general outline of the problem, can not only do the experiment but can also see the point to it. It is assumed that when the class assembles for the laboratory exercise the teacher will first make a few introductory remarks to indicate just what the problem of the day is and how it is related to the previous work and to the practical affairs of life; then he will briefly outline just how the problem is to be attacked in the laboratory.
