Book Applied Photochromic Polymer Systems

Download or read book Applied Photochromic Polymer Systems written by C.B. McArdle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photochromic polymer systems are of two main types: those which are merely solid solutions of photochromes in polymeric matrices and those custom-designed polymers which inherently exhibit photochromism. This book provides a concise review of developments in such systems over the past two decades. The coverage has been limited specifically to applied sys tems, or areas with potential applications, although over 500 references cite much of the literature on the fundamentals of the subject. In general, non-biological organic photochromism in organic matrices has been covered. However, the unique properties of polysiloxanes merit special mention in Chapter 4, because of the attributes that such inorganic polymers can provide in certain systems such as liquid crystalline photochromic polymers, where two extremely interesting phenomena are combined. In addition to outlets in polarization-sensitive holographic recording media, such materials exhibit interesting non-linear optical effects suitable for optical switching and rheo-optical phenomena which may find application in mechano-optic transduction. Within this framework examples of all the important photochromic mechanisms are covered by authors from both the industrial and the academic sectors. Given the photonic nature of the phenomenon under discussion, it is not surprising that many optical applications have been proposed. It is perhaps more surprising, however, that, until recently, no large scale markets had been identified that could commercially exploit photochromic phenomena.

Book Polymers for Photonics Applications II

Download or read book Polymers for Photonics Applications II written by Kwang-Sup Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-03-05 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of information technology requires ultra high speed processing and large data storage capacity. Since the electronics technology using semi conduc tors and inorganic materials is about to reach its limits, much current research is focused on utilizing much faster photons than electrons, namely photonics. To achieve any significant effect on the actual use of the science of photonics, devel opments of more efficient photonics materials, better optical property evaluations, manufacture of devices for system applications, etc. are the subjects which need to be explored. In particular, the development of photonics materials stands in the forefront of research as this constitutes the most pertinent factor with regard to the development of ultra high speed and large capacity information processing. In this respect, there has been continuous research on photo responsive materials through molecular structure design and architecture and the results so far are very promising as functions and performances are beginning to realize their high expectations. The two special volumes "Polymers for Photonics Applications" give authorita tive and critical reviews on up to date activities in various fields of photonic poly mers including their promising applications. Seven articles have been contributed by internationally recognized and they deal with, polymers for second and third order nonlinear optics, quadratic parametric interactions in polymer waveguides, electroluminescent polymers as light sources, photoreflective polymers for holo graphic information storage, and highly efficient two photon absorbing organics and polymers.

Book High Temperature Polymer for Second Order Nonlinear Optics for Photonic Materials

Download or read book High Temperature Polymer for Second Order Nonlinear Optics for Photonic Materials written by Hilary S. Lackritz and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are examining a variety of novel high temperature stable polymers as new materials for second order nonlinear optical (NLO) and photorefractive devices. Current polymers have sufficient optical signal generated by available chromophores, but are not practical for device applications because of limitations in the temporal stability of the dopant orientation in the polymer caused by poor thermal stability of the host. This is a novel approach for developing a new class of photonic materials with superior thermal and temporal stability and is the first attempt to design a second order NLO polymer with controllable, tailorable local physical and electrical properties. A second, equally important goal is to understand the basic polymer physics controlling the thermal and temporal stability of the optical chromophore orientation. This will determine not only the overall efficiency of the materials for device applications, but will generate substantial information about mobility in high temperature stable polymer systems.
