Book Application of Photon Echo Resonance to Problems in Solid State and Optical Physics

Download or read book Application of Photon Echo Resonance to Problems in Solid State and Optical Physics written by Isaac D. Abella and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic experimental phenomenon of photon echo resonance consists of applying two brief laser pulses, separated by a time tau, to a resonant absorbing system. In the work discussed, the source is a liquid nitrogen cooled ruby laser, Q-switched by Kerr-cell, while the absorbing media are samples of ruby. The target system responds by emitting an echo pulse at time 2 tau whose amplitude is characteristic of the state of phase coherence. The echo is detected by a photomultiplier and suitably displaced. Thus, such phase disrupting phenomena as lattice vibration, i.e., phonon excitation, or magnetic interactions with the same, or different species of atom, contribute to the echo decay. The original proposal made in this contract, contained several programs of study, which have been successfully carried out. We proposed to study the magnetic properties of echo generation, which is described by Modulation of Echoes. We also proposed the study of concentration dependence and other temperature-independent decay. This is described in the body of the report as is the important advance in direct measurement of lifetimes of photon-echo decay. One of the consequences of this work is the development of circular polarized excitation in which clear separation of echo subsystems are observed. (Author).

Book Accumulated Photon Echoes as a Probe of Radiationless Relaxation Processes in Nd Doped Glasses

Download or read book Accumulated Photon Echoes as a Probe of Radiationless Relaxation Processes in Nd Doped Glasses written by Keith W. Ver Steeg and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accumulated photon echoes (APE) were used to measure the dephasing rates of Nd3+ in various inorganic glasses as a function of excitation wavelength, sample temperature, and laser power. Although dephasing processes of optical transitions in solids are of considerable interest, they are poorly understood, largely due to the lack of experimental data on femtosecond and picosecond time scales. The APE technique using sub-picosecond laser sources has made it possible to measure in the time domain dephasing rates of inhomogeneously broadened transitions in amorphous systems. This technique therefore acts as a complement to dephasing experiments done in the frequency domain, such as spectral holeburning. Other researchers have used similar stimulated echo techniques to optically store binary information in solid state materials. Thus the results of this work provide information useful to the understanding of fundamental physical processes affecting the characteristics of spectral holeburning and in addition they may have direct application to optical storage techniques based on photon echoes.

Book Structure and Bonding in Noncrystalline Solids

Download or read book Structure and Bonding in Noncrystalline Solids written by George E. Walrafen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-02-09 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noncrystalline (NC) solids, as is well known, lack the long range order of crystals. Accordingly, they exhibit scattering, e.g., x-ray, electron, and neutron, but not the diffraction patterns characteristic of crystals. The intensity distributions from NC solids are usually transformed into radial distribution functions (RDF), but the interpretation of the RDF's is not unique. The lack of long-range order, and the non-uniqueness of the structural interpretation, have constituted the main obstacles to the usual solid state physics approach which has been so successful in dealing with crystals. As a corrolary, questions of local order and structure have frequently been de-emphasized. This monograph contains a collection of chapters many of which emphasize local-structure and chemical bonding as opposed to long-range order. Most of the chapters were chosen from talks given at the international symposium, "Structure and Bonding in Noncrystalline Solids," held in Reston, Virginia in May of 1983. Other chapters, however, were simply submitted independently of the Reston conference. Thus, this book is not a proceedings of that conference, nor was it ever intended to be. The chapters presented here range from theory of bonding and structure, to structurally oriented measurements of various kinds, e.g., ESR, Raman, to more applied chapters. Our goal was to produce a monograph that enhances understanding of the structures of NC solids.

Book Femtochemistry and Femtobiology

Download or read book Femtochemistry and Femtobiology written by Monique M. Martin and published by Elsevier Science Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the heights of knowledge of ultrafast chemical processes attained in these early years of the 21st century : the latest research in femtosecond and picosecond molecular processes in Chemistry and Biology, carried out around the world, is described here in more than 110 articles. The results were presented and discussed at the VIth International Conference on Femtochemistry, in Paris, France, from July 6 to July 10, 2003. The articles published here were reviewed by referees selected from specialists in the Femtochemistry community, guaranteeing a collective responsability for the quality of the research reported in the next 564 pages. Femtochemistry is an ever-growing field, where new research areas are constantly opening up, and one which both stimulates and accompanies the development of ultrafast technologies. The increasing interest in femtobiology and chemistry at the frontier with biology is an obvious indicator of the present impact of life sciences in our society. New materials and reactions at surfaces are also some of the relatively new topics that promise rapid developments. New methodologies and technologies for probing and following in real time molecular dynamical phenomena have appeared within the last ten years or so. These methods, based on multidimensional IR spectroscopies, ultrafast X-ray and electron diffraction techniques, are well represented in this book. Of ever-improving performance, they are now applied to the characterization of structural dynamics of an increasing number of chemical and biological systems. This book reports the state of research in Femtochemistry and Femtobiology presented at Paris, at the Maison de la Chimie, in July 2003, representing the tenth anniversary of the conference. * Overview of the most recent research on ultrafast events * Application of new methodologies on chemical and biological systems * Contributions by key players in the field

Book Terahertz Science and Technology for Military and Security Applications

Download or read book Terahertz Science and Technology for Military and Security Applications written by Dwight L. Woolard and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inherent advantages and potential payoffs of the terahertz (THz) regime for military and security applications serve as an important driver for interest in new THz-related science and technology. In particular, the very rapid growth in more recent years is arguably most closely linked to the potential payoffs of THz sensing and imaging (THz-S&I). This book presents some of the leading fundamental research efforts towards the realization of practical THz-S&I capabilities for military and security applications. Relevant subjects include theoretical prediction and/or measurement of THz spectroscopic phenomenon in solid-state materials such as high explosives (e.g. HMX, PETN, RDX, TNT, etc.), carbon-fiber composites, biological agents (e.g. DNA, RNA, proteins, amino acids) and organic-semiconductor nanostructures. Individual papers also address the effective utilization of state-of-the-art THz-frequency technology in military and security relevant scenarios such as standoff S&I, screening of packages and personnel, and perimeter defense. Technical papers introduce novel devices and/or concepts that enhance THz source and detector performance, enabling completely new types of sensor functionality at THz frequency (e.g. detection at nanoscale/molecular levels), and defining new and innovative sensing modalities (e.g. remote personnel identification) for defense and security. Therefore, the collective research presented here represents a valuable source of information on the evolving field of THz-S&I for military and security applications. Sample Chapter(s). Foreword (106 KB). Chapter 1: Development of Computational Methodologies for the Prediction and Analysis of Solid-State Terahertz Spectra (1,347 KB).
