  • Author : Robert H. Webb
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press

  • ISBN : 9780816515783
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Grand Canyon written by Robert H. Webb and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1996-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographs made in Grand Canyon a century ago may provide us with a sense of history; photographs made today from the same vantage points give us a more precise picture of change in this seemingly timeless place. Between 1889 and 1890, Robert Brewster Stanton made photographs every one to two miles through the river corridor for the purpose of planning a water-level railroad route; he produced the largest collection of photographs of the Colorado River at one point in time. Robert Webb, a USGS hydrologist conducting research on debris flows in the Canyon, obtained the photographs, and from 1989 to 1995, he replicated all 445 of the views captured by Stanton, matching as closely as possible the original camera positions and lighting conditions. Grand Canyon, a Century of Change assembles the most dramatic of these paired photographs to demonstrate both the persistence of nature and the presence of humanity. The level of detail obtained from the photographs represent one of the most extensive long-term monitoring efforts ever conducted in a national park and the most detailed documentation effort ever performed using repeat photography. Much more than simply a picture book, Grand Canyon, a Century of Change is an environmental history of the river corridor, a fascinating book that clearly shows the impact of human influence on Grand Canyon and warns us that the Canyon's future is very much in our hands.

  • Author :
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780816524976
  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Husk of Time written by and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer and filmmaker Victor Masayesva, Jr., was raised in the Hopi village of Hotevilla and was educated at the Horace Mann School in New York, Princeton University, and the University of Arizona. His immersion in photographic experimentation embraces a projection of stories and symbols, natural objects, and locations both at Hopi and worldwide. His work has been exhibited internationally, and he is perhaps best known for his feature-length film Imagining Indians. For Masayesva, photography is a discipline that he approaches in a manner similar to the way that he was taught about himself and his clan identity. As he navigates his personal associations with Hopi subject matter in varied investigations of biology, ecology, humanity, history, planetary energy, places remembered, and musings on things broken and whole, he has created an extraordinary visual cosmography. In this compilation of his photographic journey, Masayesva presents some of the most important and vibrant images of that visual quest and reflects on them in provocative essays.

Book Riding Shotgun with Norman Wallace

Download or read book Riding Shotgun with Norman Wallace written by William Wyckoff and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Southwest Books of the Year In Riding Shotgun with Norman Wallace, award-winning geographer William Wyckoff celebrates the photographic legacy of Norman Grant Wallace, whose work as an Arizona highway engineer during the first half of the twentieth century afforded him the opportunity to survey every corner of the Grand Canyon State. Possessing a passion for photography, Wallace documented Arizona throughout his travels. From 1906 to 1969 Wallace photographed the state's natural and rural landscapes; its burgeoning infrastructure including roads, bridges, and dams; and its towns and cities, some of which experienced exponential growth following World War II. Nearly one hundred years later, Wyckoff retraces Wallace's southwestern travels using the engineer's photographs and meticulous notebooks as a guide. The author rephotographs many of Wallace's iconic vantage points, giving us a historical tour of Arizona, a "then-and-now" viewpoint that also tells the personal story of Wyckoff's own vicarious travels with Wallace through Arizona's vast countryside and its urban centers and small towns.
