Book Internal Combustion Engineering Science Technology

Download or read book Internal Combustion Engineering Science Technology written by P.M. Weaving and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 874 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Diarmuid Downs, CBE, FEng, FRS Engineering is about designing and making marketable artefacts. The element of design is what principally distinguishes engineering from science. The engineer is a creator. He brings together knowledge and experience from a variety of sources to serve his ends, producing goods of value to the individual and to the community. An important source of information on which the engineer draws is the work of the scientist or the scientifically minded engineer. The pure scientist is concerned with knowledge for its own sake and receives his greatest satisfaction if his experimental observations fit into an aesthetically satisfying theory. The applied scientist or engineer is also concerned with theory, but as a means to an end. He tries to devise a theory which will encompass the known experimental facts, both because an all embracing theory somehow serves as an extra validation of the facts and because the theory provides us with new leads to further fruitful experimental investigation. I have laboured these perhaps rather obvious points because they are well exemplified in this present book. The first internal combustion engines, produced just over one hundred years ago, were very simple, the design being based on very limited experimental information. The current engines are extremely complex and, while the basic design of cylinder, piston, connecting rod and crankshaft has changed but little, the overall performance in respect of specific power, fuel economy, pollution, noise and cost has been absolutely transformed.

Book Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book Internal Combustion Engines written by Constantine Arcoumanis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal Combustion Engines covers the trends in passenger car engine design and technology. This book is organized into seven chapters that focus on the importance of the in-cylinder fluid mechanics as the controlling parameter of combustion. After briefly dealing with a historical overview of the various phases of automotive industry, the book goes on discussing the underlying principles of operation of the gasoline, diesel, and turbocharged engines; the consequences in terms of performance, economy, and pollutant emission; and of the means available for further development and improvement. A chapter focuses on the automotive fuels of the various types of engines. Recent developments in both the experimental and computational fronts and the application of available research methods on engine design, as well as the trends in engine technology, are presented in the concluding chapters. This book is an ideal compact reference for automotive researchers and engineers and graduate engineering students.

Book Energy and Combustion Science

Download or read book Energy and Combustion Science written by N. A. Chigier and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy and Combustion Science is a collection of papers that covers advancement in the field of energy and combustion science. The materials presented in the book are organized thematically into parts. The text first covers the issues, concerns, problems of the contemporary combustion technology. The subsequent parts of the book cover various areas in combustions science, namely, pollution, gas, oil, coal, and engines. Most of the articles in the book are concerned with the byproduct of fuel combustion. The text will be of great use to students, researchers, and practitioners of disciplines that deal with the energy and combustion technology.

Book Atomization and Sprays

Download or read book Atomization and Sprays written by Arthur H. Lefebvre and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this long-time bestseller provides a framework for designing and understanding sprays for a wide array of engineering applications. The text contains correlations and design tools that can be easily understood and used in relating the design of atomizers to the resulting spray behavior. Written to be accessible to readers with a modest technical background, the emphasis is on application rather than in-depth theory. Numerous examples are provided to serve as starting points for using the information in the book. Overall, this is a thoroughly updated edition that still retains the practical focus and readability of the original work by Arthur Lefebvre.
