Book Photodegradation of Water Pollutants

Download or read book Photodegradation of Water Pollutants written by Martin M. Halmann and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photodegradation of Water Pollutants, the only complete survey available of current photocatalytic methods for treating water pollutants, covers all aspects of light-stimulated detoxification. Ideal for researchers and students, this new book explains methods for pollution treatment that have proven more effective than conventional biodegradation. Photodegradation of Water Pollutants examines advanced oxidation processes that have been successful in treating the chemical substances produced by industrial effluents and intensive agriculture. These oxidation processes include irradiation with ultraviolet or visible light, the use of homogenous sensitizers, such as dyes, and the use of heterogeneous photocatalysts, such as dispersed semiconductors. In addition, Photodegradation of Water Pollutants addresses the naturally occurring self-cleaning of some pollutants in sunlit surface waters, as well as several alternative non-photochemical approaches to water treatment. Available treatment options are discussed for the main groups of water pollutants, including toxic inorganic ions (cyanides, heavy metals), hydrocarbon derivatives (oil spills, surfactants, pulp and paper wastes), halocarbons, organo-N, organo-P, and organo-S compounds. The text also contains a unique section on the economics of advanced oxidation pollution treatments.

Book Photocatalytic Reaction Engineering

Download or read book Photocatalytic Reaction Engineering written by Hugo de Lasa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a novel technique for water purification. Publications on photocatalysis span a relatively recent period of not more than 25 years. This is a technique that, according to our extensive experience on the development of laboratory scale and pilot plant units, has great promise to eliminate water and air pollutants. Photocatalysis offers much more than competitive techniques where pollutants are transferred from phases; photocatalysis can achieve complete mineralization of pollutants leaving non-toxic species such as CO2 and H2O and can be exploited at close to room temperature and ambient pressure.

Book Environmental Photochemistry

Download or read book Environmental Photochemistry written by Pierre Boule and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Chemistry is a relatively young science. Interest in this subject, however, is growing very rapidly and, although no agreement has been reached as yet about the exact content and limits of this interdisciplinary discipline, there appears to be increasing interest in seeing environmental topics which are based on chemistry embodied in this subject. One of the first objectives of Environ mental Chemistry must be the study of the environment and of natural chemical processes which occur in the environment. A major purpose of this series on Environmental Chemistry, therefore, is to present a reasonably uniform view of various aspects of the chemistry of the environment and chemical reactions occurring in the environment. The industrial activities of man have given a new dimension to Environ mental Chemistry. We have now synthesized and described over five million chemical compounds and chemical industry produces about hundred and fifty million tons of synthetic chemicals annually. We ship billions of tons of oil per year and through mining operations and other geophysical modifications, large quantities of inorganic and organic materials are released from their natural deposits. Cities and metropolitan areas of up to 15 million inhabitants produce large quantities of waste in relatively small and confined areas. Much of the chemical products and waste products of modern society are released into the environment either during production, storage, transport, use or ultimate disposal. These released materials participate in natural cycles and reactions and frequently lead to interference and disturbance of natural systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and important book aims to help achieve a more sustainable textile industry; researchers from both textile and environmental domains will benefit from reading it. Since it is imperative to rehabilitate our damaged environmental ecosystems, there is a pressing demand for more sustainable green processes in the textile and clothing industry. As a consequence, greater emphasis needs to be placed on research into eco-friendly processes particularly suited for this industry. With this goal in mind, all environmental aspects relating to the textile and clothing industry are discussed in this book in four broad areas: Highlights the negative impact on the environment by textile industries; Discusses textiles finishing by natural or eco-friendly means; Promotes natural dyes as environment-friendly alternatives to synthetics; Reviews textile effluents remediation via chemical, physical and bioremediation. Included in the 11 informative chapters are topics covering the correlation between the environment and the processing and utilization of textiles and clothing. The book opens with a discussion on the direct impact that the textile industry has on the environment. The hazardous environmental consequences that synthetic dyes used to color textiles have on the environment are highlighted in the next chapter. Greener alternatives to dyeing are discussed in detail in the next chapters followed by a discussion of eco-friendly ways of finishing textiles. The book concludes with a section of chapters providing solutions to address the environmental hazards associated with the textile industry.
