Book Physics and Chemistry of the Earth

Download or read book Physics and Chemistry of the Earth written by L. H. Ahrens and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 965 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics and Chemistry of the Earth investigates the physics and chemistry of the earth, with emphasis on kimberlite and xenolith geology. Topics covered range from field geology to mineralogy and geochemistry, diamond inclusions, and experimental and theoretical petrology. Diatreme emplacement by fluidization is also discussed, along with the chemistry and genesis of opaque minerals in kimberlites; light element metasomatism of the continental mantle; and primary and secondary phlogopites and clinopyroxenes in garnet lherzolite xenoliths. Comprised of 59 chapters, this volume begins with a description of a model of a kimberlite pipe that depicts a hypothetical pipe having a diameter of 300 m at a level equivalent to the post-erosional surface of the major pipes in the Kimberley area, South Africa. Subsequent chapters explore the formation of phreatomagmatic maar-diatreme volcanoes and its relevance to kimberlite diatremes; emplacement of some diatreme-facies kimberlites; irregular patterns of magmatism in southwestern United States; and the chemistry of titanium-poor spinels, ilmenites, and rutiles from peridotite and eclogite xenoliths. Chromite-silicate intergrowths in upper mantle peridotites are also analyzed. The final chapter is devoted to theoretical aspects of gaseous and isotopic equilibria in the system C-H-O-S, with application to kimberlite. This book will be of interest to physicists and geophysicists, chemists and geochemists, geologists, and earth scientists.

Book The Language Report

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2007 is the fifth year of The Language Report's publication and provides a unique opportunity to look back at five years' worth of developments in all aspects of language, charting both small and dramatic changes in areas as diverse as punctuation and political jargon. The Language Report 5 not only takes a historical long view, comparing the state of English a hundred years ago with the present day, but also includes a smaller retrospective snapshot of the last five years to reveal new beginnings in the language's evolution as well as concentrated examples of continuing long-term change. Both approaches provide an excellent vantage point from which to take a predictive look at English in the future. Each year The Language Report - eagerly awaited by language enthusiasts everywhere - includes chapters on new areas in which English is developing in interesting ways (such as the language used in the advertising of cosmetics in 2005). The celebratory 2007 edition will continue to broaden the survey, taking in for example the language of food and drink, advertising and marketing, and the influence of celebrity culture

Book Informative Psychometric Filters

Download or read book Informative Psychometric Filters written by Robert A. M. Gregson and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a series of case studies with a common theme. Some refer closely to previous work by the author, but contrast with how they have been treated before, and some are new. Comparisons are drawn using various sorts of psychological and psychophysiological data that characteristically are particularly nonlinear, non-stationary, far from equilibrium and even chaotic, exhibiting abrupt transitions that are both reversible and irreversible, and failing to meet metric properties. A core idea is that both the human organism and the data analysis procedures used are filters, that may variously preserve, transform, distort or even destroy information of significance.
