Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIV Who ought to govern? Why should I obey the law? How should conflict be controlled? What is the proper education for a citizen and a statesman? These questions probe some of the deepest and most enduring problems that every society confronts, regardless of time and place. Today we ask the same crucial questions about law, authority, justice, and freedom that Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Tocqueville faced in previous centuries. In this lively and enlightening book, Professor Steven B. Smith introduces the wide terrain of political philosophy through the classic texts of the discipline. Works by the greatest thinkers illuminate the permanent problems of political life, Smith shows, and while we may not accept all their conclusions, it would be a mistake to overlook the relevance of their insights. /div

Book Homer and the Tradition of Political Philosophy

Download or read book Homer and the Tradition of Political Philosophy written by Peter J. Ahrensdorf and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Peter Ahrensdorf explores an overlooked but crucial role that Homer played in the thought of Plato, Machiavelli, and Nietzsche concerning, notably, the relationship between politics, religion, and philosophy; and in their debates about human nature, morality, the proper education for human excellence, and the best way of life. By studying Homer in conjunction with these three political philosophers, Ahrensdorf demonstrates that Homer was himself a philosophical thinker and educator. He presents the full force of Plato's critique of Homer and the paramount significance of Plato's achievement in winning honor for philosophy. Ahrensdorf also makes possible an appreciation of the powerful concerns expressed by Machiavelli and Nietzsche regarding that achievement. By uncovering and bringing to life the rich philosophic conversation among these four foundational thinkers, Ahrensdorf shows that there are many ways of living a philosophic life. His book broadens and deepens our understanding of what a philosopher is.

Book Readings in Political Philosophy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION Dominant interest in political science to-day is in contemporary and practical aspects of the subject. Many problems appearing within this field require for their solution, however, careful reasoning in terms which are general and abstract; this applies not so much to definitions as to considerations of the purposes and means of government. It seems manifest, for example, that for both our national and our commonwealth politics we need deliberate discussion concerning our intent as to the functions of our political system. Such an examination is of immediate practical consequence; but it cannot be completed through considerations of experience alone. However fully and precisely we record, compare and systematize our observations of experience, we cannot speak conclusively of the success or failure of this or that governmental design or of the justification of the state's entrance into a proposed new sphere of action, until we attain better founded ideas than most of us now possess as to what in general we expect to accomplish through our agencies of civil government. The issue between conservatism and progressivism has, in this country as in England, come to be very much less than it once was a question of formal rights and precedents. Whether or not that issue can cease entirely to be such a question, it seems clear that discussion of differences involved in the issue will continue to be highly opportunist and tentative unless we are brought to realize that the argument must proceed from and tend toward general propositions as to the character and province of government. What is here said is not so much a plea for abstract speculation as for a neglected side of practical reflection concerning our expectations from political...

Book Philosophy and Real Politics

Download or read book Philosophy and Real Politics written by Raymond Geuss and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-08-17 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many contemporary political thinkers are gripped by the belief that their task is to develop an ideal theory of rights or justice for guiding and judging political actions. But in Philosophy and Real Politics, Raymond Geuss argues that philosophers should first try to understand why real political actors behave as they actually do. Far from being applied ethics, politics is a skill that allows people to survive and pursue their goals. To understand politics is to understand the powers, motives, and concepts that people have and that shape how they deal with the problems they face in their particular historical situations. Philosophy and Real Politics both outlines a historically oriented, realistic political philosophy and criticizes liberal political philosophies based on abstract conceptions of rights and justice. The book is a trenchant critique of established ways of thought and a provocative call for change.

Book Introducing Political Philosophy

Download or read book Introducing Political Philosophy written by Dave Robinson and published by Icon Books Ltd. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential illustrated guide to key ideas of political thought. Philosophers have always asked fundamental and disturbing questions about politics. Plato and Aristotle debated the merits of democracy. The origins of society, the state and government authority were issues addressed by Hobbes, Rousseau, Hegel, Marx and many other philosophers. Introducing Political Philosophy explains the central concepts of this intriguing branch of philosophy and presents the major political theorists from Plato to Foucault. How did governments get started? Why should they be obeyed? Could we live without them? How much power should they have? Is freedom a right? Which is the best form of government? In the wake of consumerism and postmodernism, our need for a better grasp of political ideas is greater than ever. Dave Robinson's account of this complex subject is always clear, informative and accompanied by the entertainingly inventive illustrations of Judy Groves.

Download or read book The Key Texts of Political Philosophy written by Thomas L. Pangle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to analytical interpretation of seminal writings and thinkers in the history of political thought, including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Bible, Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli, Bacon, Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Tocqueville, Marx, and Nietzsche. Chronologically arranged, each chapter in the book is devoted to the work of a single thinker. The selected texts together engage with 2000 years of debate on fundamental questions including: what is the purpose of political life? What is justice? What is a right? Do human beings have rights? What kinds of human virtues are there and which regimes best promote them? The difficulty of accessing the texts included in this volume is the result not only of their subtlety but also of the dramatic change in everyday life. The authors shed light on the texts' vocabulary and complexities of thought and help students understand and weigh the various interpretations of each philosopher's thought.
