Book The Exposition of the Vedanta Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Exposition of the Vedanta Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Graves Champney Haughton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exposition of the Vedanta Philosophy With regret I perceive, that the observations, to which allusion has been made, were not accepted in a spirit resembling that which gave them utterance. I can appeal with confidence to my published remarks, and to the members who were present when I delivered them, that nothing was said, or indicated by tone or manner, which should have caused to Colonel Kennedy the slightest pain had he been even present. My observations were restricted to the expres sion of my conviction, that Mr. Colebrooke had been misunderstood; and that the Hindus really bad a word in the Sanscrit language equivalent to mat ter; indeed, so much was my whole feeling opposed to anything calculated to give offence, that I spoke of Colonel Kennedy as an able and learned writer. Those sentiments were delivered on the impulse of the moment, and without premeditation, as the scope of his argument had been unknown to me, until the paper was read before the Societv. It seemed a subject for regret that the meeting, which happened to be numerous, should carry away, at its separation, any impression unfavourable to Mr Colebrooke; for, recollections left on my mind by the perusal of his paper, some years before, satisfied me that he had been misunderstood. I was the more desirous of counteracting any misappre hension on the subject, as Mr. Colebrooke was disabled by loss of sight and general infirmity from making any reply to Colonel Kennedy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vedanta Philosophy: Self-Knowledge (Atma-Jnana) IN this age of scepticism and materialism few people care to know their real Self, which is Divine and immortal. But the knowledge of the true Self has always been the principal theme of the philosophy and religion of Ve danta. Even in its most ancient writings, the Upanishads, which form portions of the Vedic Scriptures, we find how earnestly Self knowledge or Atma-jnana was sought after and extolled. The great inspired seers men tioned in these Upanishads discovered and taught that knowledge of the Self lies at the root of all knowledge, whether of science, philosophy or religion. Every sincere seeker after knowledge, therefore, who desires intel lectual, moral or spiritual development, must first learn to discriminate between spirit and matter, soul and body, and then realize the all-knowing Divine Self who is the eternal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Doctrine of Maya: In the Philosophy of the Vedanta is author Prabhu Dutt Shastri's work examining the Upanishads. A particularly talented writer, Shastri was a religious scholar who taught at universities across the world and was a research scholar with the Government of India. The book opens with a brief preface from the author before diving into the subject matter. Chapter one is the author's introduction to the concept of Maya. Shastri begins at the most obvious starting point, which is laying out at definitive definition of the word Maya, a term that is frequently misunderstood. Having established this definition, the author proceeds to an examination of the concept of the doctrine of Maya. The author's central thesis is that the idea of Maya far predates the naming of the doctrine. Shastri examines the text of the Rig Veda and the Upanishads to build this argument. The final chapter of the book is devoted to responding to objections to the doctrine of Maya. The author selects several prominent arguments opposing the doctrine and attempts to correct the misunderstandings present in these disagreements. The Doctrine of Maya is a relatively brief and surprisingly readable treatment of the subject matter. Shastri's prose is simple and elegant. He writes with a definitive voice that guides the reader to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Religious studies students and scholars, as well as anybody interested in Vedic philosophy, will likely find this to be an illuminating and educational read. Prabhu Dutt Shastri's The Doctrine of Maya: In the Philosophy of the Vedanta is a tremendous addition to anybody's library of religious, spiritual, and philosophical texts. It is a concise examination of Maya that will only serve to expand the reader's knowledge of the subject while providing some potentially unexpected entertainment.
