Book The Philosophy of Labour

Download or read book The Philosophy of Labour written by C. Delisle Burns and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1925, C. Delisle Burns’ The Philosophy of Labour attempts to lay down key aspects of labour and the working class of that time period, covering aspects such as economic obstacles, standards of living and patriotism. Burns does not draw on past philosophers or sociological thinkers of the working-class and instead chose to focus only on the attitude of the workers in factories, mines, roads, railways and other forms of manual labour. This title will be of interest to students of philosophy.

Book Labour and Value Rethinking Marx s Theory of Exploitation

Download or read book Labour and Value Rethinking Marx s Theory of Exploitation written by Ernesto Screpanti and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Ernesto Screpanti provides a rigorous examination of Marx’s theory of exploitation, one of the cornerstones of Marxist thought. With precision and clarity, he identifies the holes in traditional readings of Marx’s theory before advancing his own original interpretation, drawing on contemporary philosophy and economic theory to provide a refreshingly interdisciplinary exegesis. Screpanti’s arguments are delivered with perspicuity and verve: this is a book that aims to spark a debate. He exposes ambiguities present in Marx’s exposition of his own theory, especially when dealing with the employment contract and the notions of ‘abstract labor’ and ‘labor value’, and he argues that these ambiguities have given rise to misunderstandings in previous analyses of Marx’s theory of exploitation. Screpanti’s own interpretation is a meticulously argued counterpoint to these traditional interpretations. Labour and Value is a significant contribution to the theory of economics, particularly Marxist economics. It will also be of great interest to scholars in other disciplines including sociology, political science, and moral and political philosophy. Screpanti’s clear and engaging writing style will attract the interested general reader as well as the academic theorist.

An introduction by the editor charts the historical development of these issues in philosophical and political discussions and examines the central importance of the organization and structures of work for both individual self-realization and human societies generally.Philosophy and the Problems of Work brings together for the first time important philosophical perspectives on the subjects of labor and work, spanning analytical and Continental traditions. Book The Philosophy of the Labor Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Philosophy of the Labor Movement Classic Reprint written by Frederic A. Hinckley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Labor Movement See that man-with ragged clothes and filthy face, his hair uncombed, just enough of his boots left to hold them together. As he walks your streets, he looks ready to go to pieces all at once, like the deacon's one-horse shay. Put some new shoes on his feet he begins to see the need of new trousers to go with them; then a new vest, a new coat, and a clean face. Then he goes home; his wife and children need new clothes, too, he thinks. Thenihis house must be re paired; there must be a carpet on the floor, a table in the room, and by-andtby, when months, perhaps years, of such reform have gone on, 'he will come home some night with the Herald or Times. Then his taste for reading will begin. He won't read Charles Sumner's speeches at first; more likely the doings of the Police Court. But he will have begun the habit of reading. SO we might *follow him through a long life Of such gradual improvement. Well, that is education, broad and substantial; the natural, logical way to abolish ignorance and its at tendant evils, such as intemperance and prostitution. It is precisely the education which forms the grand base of this whole theory of increasing wages by rais ing to a higher level the habits of the people, creat ing in them new wants, enabling them to secure new comforts. Am I not right, then, in claiming this as the educational phase of the labor movement, and in summoning to its support the men and women whose minds are broad enough to see, andwhose hearts are warm enough to feel, that this is the edu cation which the world needs Had I ten thousand tongues, each one gifted with the eloquence of o'connell, they should all say, Improve the habits Of the masses, that they may be dearer laborers and better consumers; that thus, by naturally increasing wages and production, amore equitable distribution of wealth may be attained. Download or read book Amor Mundi written by J.W. Bernauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of our collection is owed to Hannah Arendt herself. Writing to Karl Jaspers on August 6, 1955, she spoke of how she had only just begun to really love the world and expressed her desire to testify to that love in the title of what came to be published as The Human Condition: "Out of gratitude, I want to call my book about political theories Arnor Mundi. "t In retrospect, it was fitting that amor mundi, love of the world, never became the title of only one of Arendt's studies, for it is the theme which permeates all of her thought. The purpose of this volume's a- ticles is to pay a critical tribute to this theme by exploring its meaning, the cultural and intellectual sources from which it derives, as well as its resources for conte- porary thought and action. We are privileged to include as part of the collection two previously unpu- lished lectures by Arendt as well as a rarely noticed essay which she wrote in 1964. Taken together, they engrave the central features of her vision of amor mundi. Arendt presented "Labor, Work, Action" on November 10, 1964, at a conference "Christianity and Economic Man:Moral Decisions in an Affluent Society," which 2 was held at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago.
