Book Zwischen Philosophie und Gesetz

Download or read book Zwischen Philosophie und Gesetz written by Thomas Meyer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the revival of intellectual history in recent years, there is still relatively little research into German-Jewish intellectual history between 1933 and 1938. The present work studies for the first time the important discussions of the period from the debate between Leo Strauss and Julius Guttmann, Alexander Altmann’s contribution to “Jewish theology,” to the reception of the work of Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Heidegger as well as the works of David Baumgardt and Fritz Heinemann. Many now forgotten texts of those discussions have been made accessible here. All the leading figures presented in this study were sooner or later forced to choose between “philosophy” and “law.”

Book Revelation Reason and Reality

Download or read book Revelation Reason and Reality written by Joris Geldhof and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides an in-depth analysis of the relationship between modernity and Christianity. The author argues that the notion of revelation is eminently reasonable and indissolubly connected with being and reality. He takes Jaspers' philosophy of religion as representative of the 'classical' modern critique and gives it its due. He then takes a step backward, so to speak, and by means of a consideration of the history of ideas, seeks to rehabilitate the Christian understanding of revelation. To do this, he draws upon Schelling's remarkable philosophy of revelation and Baader's much less familiar speculative dogmatics. However, this study is much more than a profound philosophical and theological account of the thought of Jaspers, Schelling and Baader. It is above all an eloquent defence of the plausibility and intelligibility of what Christians have always believed. In fact, the author makes a compelling case for the claim that revelation is 'that without which Christianity cannot be thought'.

Book The Philosophy and Science of Roger Bacon

Download or read book The Philosophy and Science of Roger Bacon written by Nicola Polloni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philosophy and Science of Roger Bacon offers new insights and research perspectives on one of the most intriguing characters of the Middle Ages, Roger Bacon. At the intersections between science and philosophy, the volume analyses central aspects of Bacon’s reflections on how nature and society can be perfected. The volume dives into the intertwining of Bacon’s philosophical stances on nature, substantial change, and hylomorphism with his scientific discussion of music, alchemy, and medicine. The Philosophy and Science of Roger Bacon also investigates Bacon’s projects of education reform and his epistemological and theological ground maintaining that humans and God are bound by wisdom, and therefore science. Finally, the volume examines how Bacon’s doctrines are related to a wider historical context, particularly in consideration of Peter John Olivi, John Pecham, Peter of Ireland, and Robert Grosseteste. The Philosophy and Science of Roger Bacon is a crucial tool for scholars and students working in the history of philosophy and science and also for a broader audience interested in Roger Bacon and his long-lasting contribution to the history of ideas.

Book Praying to a French God

Download or read book Praying to a French God written by Kenneth Jason Wardley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a phenomenologist Lacoste is concerned with investigating the human aptitude for experience; as a theologian Lacoste is interested in humanity’s potential for a relationship with the divine, what he terms the ’liturgical relationship’. Beginning from the proposition that prayer is a theme that occurs throughout Lacoste’s writing, and using this proposition as a heuristic through which to view, interpret and critique his thought, this book examines Lacoste’s place amid both the recent ’theological turn’ in French thought and the post-war emergence of la nouvelle théologie. Drawing upon unpublished and out of print material previously only available in French, Romanian or German, the book will be of interest to scholars of philosophy, phenomenology and theology.

Book Democracy and the Divine

Download or read book Democracy and the Divine written by Alexandra Aidler and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advancing the thesis that a contract between the political members of a community must lead to the highest form of social inclusion, Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan (1651) has provided the groundwork for democracies around the world. Yet, Hobbes also states that this contract can only be upheld by a strong sovereign whose authority is derived from God. How can a democracy be defined, then, as truly inclusive when it essentially grows out of a theocracy that thinks about human beings in terms of “reduction”? In Democracy and the Divine: The Phenomenon of Political Romanticism Alexandra Aidler argues that despite modern democracy’s problematic heritage, one should not abandon its claims to religion. Articulating a democracy that is based on the religious principle of giving oneself to another, Aidler develops a political theology of democracy that is built upon two traditions in political thought that have rarely been examined thus far side by side for their contributions to this field: German Romanticism, as exemplified by Franz von Baader and Friedrich Schlegel, and the “theological turn” in French philosophy, as represented by Jacques Derrida and Jacques Rancière.

Book An Introduction to Hegel s Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book An Introduction to Hegel s Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion written by Jon Stewart and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It provides an account of the criticism of religion by key Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Lessing, Hume, and Kant. This is followed by an analysis of how the Romantic thinkers, such as Rousseau, Jacobi, and Schleiermacher, responded to these challenges. For Hegel, the views of these thinkers from both the Enlightenment and Romanticism tended to empty religion of its content. The goal that he sets for his own philosophy of religion is to restore this lost content. " -- back cover.

Book Volume 10 Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Volume 10 Philosophy of Religion written by Guttorm Fløistad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-31 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a continuation of the series Contemporary Philosophy. As with the earlier volumes in the series, the present Chronicles purport to give a survey of significant trends in contemporary philosophy. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the increasing contact between p- losophers from various cultures, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and in the philosophy of language and ethics, and the increasing attention being paid to the h- tory of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems, are the most important contributing factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity. The surveys may therefore help to strengthen the Socratic element of modern philosophy, the intercultural dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschaft. So far, nine volumes have been published in this series, viz. P- losophy of Language and Philosophical Logic (Volume 1), Philosophy of Science (Volume 2), Philosophy of Action (Volume 3), Philosophy of Mind (Volume 4), African Philosophy (Volume 5), Medieval Age P- losophy (Volumes 6/1 and 6/2), Asian Philosophy (Volume 7), Philo- phy of Latin America (Volume 8), and Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art (Volume 9).
