Download or read book Philosophes et historiens anciens face aux mythes written by David Bouvier and published by Belles Lettres. This book was released on 1998 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Rationalizing Myth in Antiquity

Download or read book Rationalizing Myth in Antiquity written by Greta Hawes and published by . This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek myths are characteristically fabulous; they are full of monsters, metamorphoses, and the supernatural. However, they could be told in other ways as well. This volume charts ancient dissatisfaction with the excesses of myth, and the various attempts to cut these stories down to size by explaining them as misunderstood accounts of actual events. In the hands of ancient rationalizers, the hybrid forms of the Centaurs become early horse-riders, seen from a distance; the Minotaur the result of an illicit liaison, not an inter-species love affair; and Cerberus, nothing more than a notorious snake with a lethal bite. Such approaches form an indigenous mode of ancient myth criticism, and show Greeks grappling with the value and utility of their own narrative traditions. Rationalizing interpretations offer an insight into the practical difficulties inherent in distinguishing myth from history in ancient Greece, and indeed the fragmented nature of myth itself as a conceptual entity. By focusing on six Greek authors (Palaephatus, Heraclitus, Excerpta Vaticana, Conon, Plutarch, and Pausanias) and tracing the development of rationalistic interpretation from the fourth century BC to the Second Sophistic (1st-2nd centuries AD) and beyond, Rationalizing Myth in Antiquity shows that, far from being marginalized as it has been in the past, rationalization should be understood as a fundamental component of the pluralistic and shifting network of Greek myth as it was experienced in antiquity.

Book Myth and History in Ancient Greece

Download or read book Myth and History in Ancient Greece written by Claude Calame and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-22 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surely the ancient Greeks would have been baffled to see what we consider their "mythology." Here, Claude Calame mounts a powerful critique of modern-day misconceptions on this front and the lax methodology that has allowed them to prevail. He argues that the Greeks viewed their abundance of narratives not as a single mythology but as an "archaeology." They speculated symbolically on key historical events so that a community of believing citizens could access them efficiently, through ritual means. Central to the book is Calame's rigorous and fruitful analysis of various accounts of the foundation of that most "mythical" of the Greek colonies--Cyrene, in eastern Libya. Calame opens with a magisterial historical survey demonstrating today's misapplication of the terms "myth" and "mythology." Next, he examines the Greeks' symbolic discourse to show that these modern concepts arose much later than commonly believed. Having established this interpretive framework, Calame undertakes a comparative analysis of six accounts of Cyrene's foundation: three by Pindar and one each by Herodotus (in two different versions), Callimachus, and Apollonius of Rhodes. We see how the underlying narrative was shaped in each into a poetically sophisticated, distinctive form by the respective medium, a particular poetical genre, and the specific socio-historical circumstances. Calame concludes by arguing in favor of the Greeks' symbolic approach to the past and by examining the relation of mythos to poetry and music.

Book excerpt: A full, authoritative, and wholly engaging account of these endlessly fascinating tales and of the ancient society in which they were created. From the first millennium BC until today, the myths have been repeated in an inexhaustible series of variations and reinterpretations. "Greek Myths after the Greeks" describes the rich tradition of retelling, from the Romans, through the Renaissance, to the twenty-first century. Complemented by lavish illustrations, genealogical tables, box features, and specially commissioned drawings, this will be an essential book for anyone interested in these classic tales and in the world of the ancient Greeks.

Book The Ancient Noveland the Frontiers of Genre

Download or read book The Ancient Noveland the Frontiers of Genre written by Marília P. Futre Pinheiro and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume presents a collection of thirteen papers from the Fourth International Conference on the Ancient Novel (ICAN 2008), which was held in Lisbon at the Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian from July 21 to 26, 2008. The Ancient Novel and the Frontiers of Genre reflects entirely the spirit and the general theme of the Conference, and is intended to convey the idea that both the novel as a literary form and scholarship on the ancient novel tend to mature and advance by crossing boundaries that older forms regarded as uncrossable. The papers assembled in this volume include extended prose narratives of all kinds and thereby widen and enrich the scope of the novel's canon. The essays explore a wide variety of text, crossed genres, and hybrid forms, which transgress the frontiers of the so-called ancient novel, providing an excellent insight into different kinds of narrative prose in antiquity". Download or read book La Gr ce ancienne written by Jean-Pierre Vernant and published by . This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Mythe et pens e chez les Grecs written by Jean-Pierre VERNANT and published by La Découverte. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. "

Book La sagesse des mythes Apprendre vivre 2

Download or read book La sagesse des mythes Apprendre vivre 2 written by Luc Ferry and published by Plon. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Caesar s Calendar written by Denis Feeney and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-06-04 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Romans changed more than the map of the world when they conquered so much of it; they altered the way historical time itself is marked and understood. In this brilliant, erudite, and exhilarating book Denis Feeney investigates time and its contours as described by the ancient Romans, first as Rome positioned itself in relation to Greece and then as it exerted its influence as a major world power. Feeney welcomes the reader into a world where time was movable and changeable and where simply ascertaining a date required a complex and often contentious cultural narrative. In a style that is lucid, fluent, and graceful, he investigates the pertinent systems, including the Roman calendar (which is still our calendar) and its near perfect method of capturing the progress of natural time; the annual rhythm of consular government; the plotting of sacred time onto sacred space; the forging of chronological links to the past; and, above all, the experience of empire, by which the Romans meshed the city state’s concept of time with those of the foreigners they encountered to establish a new worldwide web of time. Because this web of time was Greek before the Romans transformed it, the book is also a remarkable study in the cross-cultural interaction between the Greek and Roman worlds. Feeney’s skillful deployment of specialist material is engaging and accessible and ranges from details of the time schemes used by Greeks and Romans to accommodate the Romans’ unprecedented rise to world dominance to an edifying discussion of the fixed axis of B.C./A.D., or B.C.E./C.E., and the supposedly objective "dates" implied. He closely examines the most important of the ancient world’s time divisions, that between myth and history, and concludes by demonstrating the impact of the reformed calendar on the way the Romans conceived of time’s recurrence. Feeney’s achievement is nothing less than the reconstruction of the Roman conception of time, which has the additional effect of transforming the way the way the reader inhabits and experiences time.
