Book Phillips Brooks Memories of His Life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phillips Brooks Memories of His Life: With Extracts From His Letters and Note-Books The Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks was published in 1900, some seven years after his death. Since then an abridgment has been frequently and urgently called for, on the ground that a large number of people who would like to know Phillips Brooks have not the time to read so full a biography, whose cost also is in many cases prohibitive. In reducing the work some parts have been rewritten in order to condensation, but care has been taken to preserve everything of importance bearing on his development, and to maintain the perspective of his career. The very kind and generous reception accorded to The Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks is here most gratefully acknowledged. It indicates how deeply he had stamped his personality upon the American people, and what enduring impression he had left by his unprecedented power in the pulpit. The love and devotion which went out toward him in such unstinted measure while living have not ceased with his death. He is still speaking to the world he loved - the world whose growth he wanted to live in order that he might see. His message has not been, and cannot be, outgrown. He had solved in his capacious mind and heart the issues which still confront us. In extraordinary manner he combined a love for the historical Christ and insight into His life and teaching with a devotion so rare to the essential and eternal Christ, whom the Church has worshipped, that he seems to belong to what arc called the "Ages of Faith" rather than to the world of doubt in which he lived. Among his large utterances which tend to reconcile and encourage, this was one of the foremost, - that all humanity constitutes, according to the divine ideal, the body of Christ; and another was that the words of Christ "I am come not to destroy but to fulfil" applied not only to the spiritual aspirations and movements of His own age, but to those of every age and country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phillips Brooks, author of the carol O Little Town of Bethlehem, was the rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Boston for 22 years and the Bishop of Massachusetts for 15 months until his death in 1893. This volume in the Great American Orators series focuses on Brooks' oratorical style and the public's response to his rhetoric. Chesebrough provides a biographical sketch of Brooks' life emphasizing the development and use of his oratorical skills and placing him within the secular and ecclesiastical contexts of his times. Attention is given to Brooks' development as a public speaker and to his manner of sermon preparation and delivery. Three of Brooks' sermons are printed in their entirety: Abraham Lincoln, The Cradle of the Lord, and Help from the Hills, preceded by introductory remarks and a brief analysis of the sermon. This examination of Brooks' rhetoric will appeal to scholars of rhetoric and of American theology and American religious history, especially Episcopal history.

Book The Trouble with Truth through Personality

Download or read book The Trouble with Truth through Personality written by Charles W. Fuller and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era when the cult of personality has overtaken the task of preaching, Charles W. Fuller offers an engaging query into the necessary boundaries between the person of the preacher and the message preached. By thoroughly evaluating Phillips Brooks's classic "truth through personality" definition of preaching, Fuller brings to light a substantial error that remains in contemporary homiletics: namely, the tenuous correlation between Christ's incarnation and Christian preaching. Ultimately, Fuller asserts a sound evangelical framework for preaching on revelational, ontological, rhetorical, and teleological grounds. Preachers who desire to construct pulpit practice upon a robust evangelical foundation will benefit from Fuller's contribution.

Book The Education of Phillips Brooks

Download or read book The Education of Phillips Brooks written by John Frederick Woolverton and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Education of Phillips Brooks probes the formative years of one of the best-known figures of Victorian America's "Gilded Age." Rigorously researched, bringing as yet untapped archival material into play, John F. Woolverton's book is an extremely readable and fascinating look at a gifted, persuasive clergyman and public figure. One of the most influential ministers of his time, Brooks delivered the sermon over the body of Abraham Lincoln at Independence Hall in Philadelphia and is known for penning the lyrics to "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Although Brooks was not a major theologian, he was nurtured in an atmosphere of serious religious thought. In the crisis era of pre-Civil War America, he sought a religious and cultural ideal in the perfect manhood of Jesus Christ and consequently "won a name" for himself, as his slightly envious cousin, Henry Adams, once remarked. Woolverton places Brooks in his cultural context and shows how this religious leader was shaped psychologically and by his times and how those factors helped him forge a spiritual ideal for a troubled nation. "Not only casts new light on the young manhood of one of the preeminent Anglican ministers in America, but enhances our understanding of key cultural trends in the mid-nineteenth century." -- Anne C. Rose, author of Victorian America and the Civil War
