Book excerpt: A sweeping history of America's long and fateful military relationship with the Philippines amid a century of Pacific warfare Ever since US troops occupied the Philippines in 1898, generations of Filipinos have served in and alongside the US armed forces. In Bound by War, historian Christopher Capozzola reveals this forgotten history, showing how war and military service forged an enduring, yet fraught, alliance between Americans and Filipinos. As the US military expanded in Asia, American forces confronted their Pacific rivals from Philippine bases. And from the colonial-era Philippine Scouts to post-9/11 contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan, Filipinos were crucial partners in the exercise of US power. Their service reshaped Philippine society and politics and brought thousands of Filipinos to America. Telling the epic story of a century of conflict and migration, Bound by War is a fresh, definitive portrait of this uneven partnership and the two nations it transformed.

Book Economic Relations of the United States and the Philippines

Download or read book Economic Relations of the United States and the Philippines written by Hsien C. Yang and published by . This book was released on 1927 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps it is no exaggeration to say that the Spanish-American war is as epoch-making as the American war of revolution. The latter marks the birth of a new republic, the former the building of a new empire. In a sense the Monroe Doctrine still worked in 1898, since the war was primarily to free Cuba. But the annexation of the Philippine Islands violated the spirit of that great doctrine. At first sight, it seems strange that an altruistic war should lead to imperialism. Considering, however, the rapid economic development of the United States after the Civil War and the wide interpretation of the Monroe Doctrine as is shown in Cleveland's Venezuela message, we find that the disintegration of the old political philosophy had begun long before Commodore George Dewey fired on the Spanish fort at Manila in 1898. Yet much can be said for the Americans in defense of the accusation of imperialism. As Powers puts it, "We did not enter upon the war for the sake of colonies and empire, but the war brought us colonies and empire just the same." The agitation in the country over the question of annexation after the Treaty of Paris indicated clearly that few had expected the result of the war. Circumstance writes the large part of our history. Oftentimes man is but a puppet of circumstance.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a historical analysis of the origins of the Philippine dependency relationship with the United States, the book goes on to argue that the Philippine State acquired some degree of autonomy in formulating national policies. It reveals that while the Philippine political system is based on free wheeling capitalism led by private enterprise, State intervention in the economy has been more extensive than the economic ideology suggests.

Book Historical Dictionary of United States Southeast Asia Relations

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of United States Southeast Asia Relations written by Donald E. Weatherbee and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-04-23 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia consists of the countries of Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Historically, U.S. policy and diplomacy with Southeast Asia is defined by U.S. interests in the region, whether it's maintaining free lanes of communication through the South China Sea, gaining access to the resources and markets of Southeast Asia, or containing the spread of Communism. Since World War II, the U.S. has constantly been involved in conflicts in the region: providing material and financial support for France during the First Indochina War, direct involvement in the Vietnam War, providing support to Thailand during the Third Indochina War, and the declaration that Southeast Asia is the second-front in the war on terror after September 11. The Historical Dictionary of United States-Southeast Asia Relations identifies the key issues, individuals, and events in the history of U.S.-Southeast Asia relations and places them in the context of the complex and dynamic regional strategic, political, and economic processes that have fashioned the American role in Southeast Asia. This is done through a chronology, a bibliography, an introductory essay, appendixes, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries on key persons, places, events, institutions, and organizations.
