Book excerpt: A long-term project by Belgian artist Philippe van Wolputte that spans over a decade, 'Temporary Penetrable Exhibition Space' comprises a number of site-specific interventions in the public or semi-public space. The majority are temporary actions which are also clandestine or illegal, meaning that they generally go unnoticed by visitors or passers-by. In so doing, Van Wolputte raises questions about where the work begins or ends, what its boundaries are, whether or not the interventions actually took place, and if we are even able to tell the difference. Existing between the lines of fact and fiction, the sites documented in this volume cleverly address the notion of urban memory.

Book 2030 War Zone Amsterdam

Download or read book 2030 War Zone Amsterdam written by and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amsterdam at war in 2030. This terrifying projection into the future serves to sharpen and expand our thinking about topics such as tolerance, fear, security and control, censorship, public space and urban politics. Neither naming the enemy nor proffering any answers, theorists and artists fire off questions and sketch experimental scenarios, using Amsterdam as a concrete case as well as a strange attractor. What are the implications of urban warfare in a Western city? Is there a public domain under such circumstances and how does it function? Will people still be producing art, and how will artists reach their public? "2030: War zone Amsterdam" is being produced in association with curator Brigitte van der Sande and accompanies an international art manifestation that she is organizing under the same title, presented in various phases from November 2009 onwards in Amsterdam.

Book Flammable

  • Author : Javier Auyero
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2009-04-10
  • ISBN : 0199888264
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Flammable written by Javier Auyero and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surrounded by one of the largest petrochemical compounds in Argentina, a highly polluted river that brings the toxic waste of tanneries and other industries, a hazardous and largely unsupervised waste incinerator, and an unmonitored landfill, Flammable's soil, air, and water are contaminated with lead, chromium, benzene, and other chemicals. So are its nearly five thousand sickened and frail inhabitants. How do poor people make sense of and cope with toxic pollution? Why do they fail to understand what is objectively a clear and present danger? How are perceptions and misperceptions shared within a community? Based on archival research and two and a half years of collaborative ethnographic fieldwork in Flammable, this book examines the lived experiences of environmental suffering. Despite clear evidence to the contrary, residents allow themselves to doubt or even deny the hard facts of industrial pollution. This happens, the authors argue, through a "labor of confusion" enabled by state officials who frequently raise the issue of relocation and just as frequently suspend it; by the companies who fund local health care but assert that the area is unfit for human residence; by doctors who say the illnesses are no different from anywhere else but tell mothers they must leave the neighborhood if their families are to be cured; by journalists who randomly appear and focus on the most extreme aspects of life there; and by lawyers who encourage residents to hold out for a settlement. These contradictory actions, advice, and information work together to shape the confused experience of living in danger and ultimately translates into a long, ineffective, and uncertain waiting time, a time dictated by powerful interests and shared by all marginalized groups. With luminous and vivid descriptions of everyday life in the neighborhood, Auyero and Swistun depict this on-going slow motion human and environmental disaster and dissect the manifold ways in which it is experienced by Flammable residents.

Book Higher Powers

  • Author : China Scherz
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2024-02-06
  • ISBN : 0520396790
  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Higher Powers written by China Scherz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Powers draws on four years of collaborative fieldwork carried out with Ugandans working to reconstruct their lives after attempting to leave behind problematic alcohol use. Given the relatively recent introduction of biomedical ideas of alcoholism and addiction in Uganda, most of these people have used other therapeutic resources, including herbal aversion therapies, engagements with balubaale spirits, and forms of deliverance and spiritual warfare practiced in Pentecostal churches. While these methods are at times severe, they contain within them understandings of the self and practices of sociality that point away from models of addiction as a chronic relapsing brain disease and towards the possibility of release. Higher Powers offers a reconceptualization of addiction and recovery that may prove relevant well beyond Uganda.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Windhoek in the early 1960s: the 34-year-old politician Clemens Kapuuo knocks at the door of the senior advocate Israel Goldblatt to solicit advice regarding the myriad of difficulties encountered by Africans daily under the apartheid regime. An unusual relationship and friendship develops, one that transcends the racial divide in this South African-governed Territory and will last for nearly 10 years. Meeting in Goldblatt's chambers, at his home and in the Old Location, other participants in the consultations included the veteran politician Chief Hosea Kutako and a group of younger nationalists, among them Rev. Bartholomews Karuaera and Levy Nganjone. Through Kapuuo, Goldblatt also met Kaptein Samuel Witbooi and counselled the long-term prisoner from Caprivi, Brendan Simbwaye. Israel Goldblatt's notes on these meetings were discovered after his death and form the core of this book. They are complemented by additional biographical information about his interlocutors, and annotations that place his notes in their historical and political context. Illustrated with many photographs, this publication pays tribute to Israel Goldblatt and the Namibian nationalists who attempted to build bridges where apartheid entrenched racism and suspicion.

Book Gesture and Power

Download or read book Gesture and Power written by Yolanda Covington-Ward and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gesture and Power Yolanda Covington-Ward examines the everyday embodied practices and performances of the BisiKongo people of the Lower Congo to show how their gestures, dances, and spirituality are critical in mobilizing social and political action. Conceiving of the body as the center of analysis, a catalyst for social action, and as a conduit for the social construction of reality, Covington-Ward focuses on specific flash points in the last ninety years of Congo's troubled history, when embodied performance was used to stake political claims, foster dissent, and enforce power. In the 1920s Simon Kimbangu started a Christian prophetic movement based on spirit-induced trembling, which swept through the Lower Congo, subverting Belgian colonial authority. Following independence, dictator Mobutu Sese Seko required citizens to dance and sing nationalist songs daily as a means of maintaining political control. More recently, embodied performance has again stoked reform, as nationalist groups such as Bundu dia Kongo advocate for a return to precolonial religious practices and non-Western gestures such as traditional greetings. In exploring these embodied expressions of Congolese agency, Covington-Ward provides a framework for understanding how embodied practices transmit social values, identities, and cultural history throughout Africa and the diaspora.

Book Street Naming Cultures in Africa and Israel

Download or read book Street Naming Cultures in Africa and Israel written by Liora Bigon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is focused on the street-naming politics, policies and practices that have been shaping and reshaping the semantic, textual and visual environments of urban Africa and Israel. Its chapters expand on prominent issues, such as the importance of extra-formal processes, naming reception and unofficial toponymies, naming decolonisation, place attachment, place-making and the materiality of street signage. By this, the book directly contributes to the mainstreaming of Africa’s toponymic cultures in recent critical place-names studies. Unconventionally and experimentally, comparative glimpses are made throughout between toponymic experiences of African and Israeli cities, exploring pioneering issues in the overwhelmingly Eurocentric research tradition. The latter tends to be concentrated on Europe and North America, to focus on nationalistic ideologies and regime change and to over-rely on top-down ‘mere’ mapping and street indexing. This volume is also unique in incorporating a rich and stimulating variety of visual evidence from a wide range of African and Israeli cities. The materiality of street signage signifies the profound and powerful connections between structured politics, current mundane practices, historical traditions and subaltern cultures. Street-Naming Cultures in Africa and Israel is an important contribution to urban studies, toponymic research and African studies for scholars and students. Book excerpt: This book is the result of Jeff Weber's long-term project as Kunsthalle Leipzig, an institution which worked as an extension of his photographic practice and functioned as a conceptual frame to invite others to actively participate. His sequence of images documenting the renovation of the Leipzig apartments reflects the wish for a place created with a minimum of means and invested with freedom. Light seems to become a physical object in Weber's pictures, 'yet the quality of grey tones is mysterious,' writes Robert Beavers. Besides many photos and posters from the Kunsthalle, the book includes a critical text by Michael Baers and a conversation with the artist and Marie-France Rafael.

Many of the images depict wastelands, alternating between romantic and menacing views which create simultaneous sensations of majesty and disorientation. The book?s title is derived from the term ?Hexameter?, a poetic form of writing used in Homer?s ?Odyssey?. 00Exhibition: Musée de Bagnes & Mauvoisin Dam, Verbier, Switzerland (15.06.-29.09.2019).

Book A Japanese Afternoon

Download or read book A Japanese Afternoon written by Alain Bublex and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published along with exhibitions by contemporary artist Alain Bublex on the Mauvoisin Dam at the Musée de Bagnes in Le Châble, this book reproduces 30 photographs taken during the winter of 2015/2016 in Val de Bagnes, Switzerland, and the region of Hida, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Most depict snow-covered alpine scenes dulled by thickly overcast skies. The architecture and vegetation are strikingly similar. Yet the keen observer will notice some images are not entirely what they seem. Bublex has almost imperceptibly inserted objects that could conceivably be present into the shrouded vistas. Among these are the iconic Matterhorn, Mount Fuji, and a submarine.
