Book The Affordable City

Download or read book The Affordable City written by Shane Phillips and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Los Angeles to Boston and Chicago to Miami, US cities are struggling to address the twin crises of high housing costs and household instability. Debates over the appropriate course of action have been defined by two poles: building more housing or enacting stronger tenant protections. These options are often treated as mutually exclusive, with support for one implying opposition to the other. Shane Phillips believes that effectively tackling the housing crisis requires that cities support both tenant protections and housing abundance. He offers readers more than 50 policy recommendations, beginning with a set of principles and general recommendations that should apply to all housing policy. The remaining recommendations are organized by what he calls the Three S’s of Supply, Stability, and Subsidy. Phillips makes a moral and economic case for why each is essential and recommendations for making them work together. There is no single solution to the housing crisis—it will require a comprehensive approach backed by strong, diverse coalitions. The Affordable City is an essential tool for professionals and advocates working to improve affordability and increase community resilience through local action.

Book excerpt: In this major revision of his prize-winning 1998 book, Bethsaida: Home of the Apostles, Fred Strickert presents nonspecialist readers with the latest findings in the ongoing excavation and evaluation of et-Tell, now identified by many archaeologists as the site of biblical-era Bethsaida. New discoveries have linked the site back to the Iron Age time of David and revealed new connections to the tetrarch Philip and his family. Strickert develops an explanation for the decline and destruction of the city sharply different from his previous conclusion. Readers of Bethsaida: Home of the Apostles will want to follow the story into this sequel. Fred Strickert is professor emeritus of religion at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and is pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Jerusalem. He is the author of Rachel Weeping: Jews, Christians, and Muslims at the Fortress Tomb (Liturgical Press).

Book St Philip s Church of Charleston

Download or read book St Philip s Church of Charleston written by Dorothy Middleton Anderson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Philip's Church was commissioned shortly after the Carolina colony was founded in 1670. Because the Church of England was the established church, St. Philip's tried to meet the spiritual needs of the early settlers and also was responsible for oversight of elections, education and social services in everything from healthcare to disaster relief. St. Philip's churchwardens and vestry enforced morality laws and levied taxes. The colony's first state funeral--that of Governor Robert Johnson--took place in the church, as did that of the controversial, one-time vice president, Senator John C. Calhoun. Buried in the churchyard are Founding Fathers, pirate hunters, war heroes, statesmen and even the unfortunate victim of a sensational murder. This book recounts the early years of St. Philip's Church, the people who walked its aisles and some of the early religious conflicts that shook the community. Authors Dorothy Middleton Anderson and Margaret Middleton Rivers Eastman outline the fascinating history of the first church in the new colony.

Book Knowledge Economy and the City

Download or read book Knowledge Economy and the City written by Ali Madanipour and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between space and economy, the spatial expressions of the knowledge economy. The capitalist industrial economy produced its own space, which differed radically from its predecessor agrarian and mercantile economies. If a new knowledge-based economy is emerging, it is similarly expected to produce its own space to suit the new circumstances of production and consumption. If these spatial expressions do exist, even if in incomplete and partial forms, they are likely to be the model for the future of cities.

Book Cities and Sexualities

  • Author : Phil Hubbard
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-03-01
  • ISBN : 1135174172
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Cities and Sexualities written by Phil Hubbard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the hotspots of commercial sex through to the suburbia of twitching curtains, urban life and sexualities appear inseparable. Cities are the source of our most familiar images of sexual practice, and are the spaces where new understandings of sexuality take shape. In an era of global business and tourism, cities are also the hubs around which a global sex trade is organised and where virtual sex content is obsessively produced and consumed. Detailing the relationships between sexed bodies, sexual subjectivities and forms of intimacy, Cities and Sexualities explores the role of the city in shaping our sexual lives. At the same time, it describes how the actions of urban governors, city planners, the police and judiciary combine to produce cities in which some sexual proclivities and tastes are normalised and others excluded. In so doing, it maps out the diverse sexual landscapes of the city - from spaces of courtship, coupling and cohabitation through to sites of adult entertainment, prostitution, and pornography. Considering both the normative geographies of heterosexuality and monogamy, as well as urban geographies of radical/queer sex, this book provides a unique perspective on the relationship between sex and the city. Cities and Sexualities offers a wide overview of the state-of-the-art in geographies and sociologies of sexuality, as well as an empirically-grounded account of the forms of desire that animate the erotic city. It describes the diverse sexual landscapes that characterise both the contemporary Western city as well as cities in the global South. The book features a wide range of boxed case studies as well as suggestions for further reading at the end each chapter. It will appeal to undergraduate students studying Geography, Urban Studies, Gender Studies and Sociology.
