Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philip Augustus, or the Brothers in Arms, Vol. 1 of 2 Notwithstanding that there is something chilling in that sad, inevitable word, the past - notwithstanding that in looking through the thronged rolls of history, and reading of all the dead passions, the fruitless anxieties, the vain unproductive yearnings of beings that were once as full of thrilling life and feeling as ourselves, - and now are nothing; notwithstanding that therein we gain but the cold moral of our own littleness, yet still the very indistinctness of the distance softens and beautifies the objects that we thus look back upon in a former epoch; and in the far prospect of the days gone by, a thousand bright and glistening spots stand out, and c h the last most brilliant rays of a sun that has long the multitude of smaller things around them. Download or read book Social France at the Time of Philip Augustus Classic Reprint written by Achille Luchaire and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social France at the Time of Philip Augustus Among the pleasantest experiences of my first visit to Paris was my meeting with M. Luchaire. It chanced that he had taken extensive notes in the provincial archives of France upon the period of Innocent III, a field in which I was interested, and it was to consult him about these that I visited him. His knowledge of English was not much greater than my limited acquaintance with his mother-tongue, and the interview was hardly a success from any standpoint except the humorous. A subsequent conversation by means of an interpreter proved more fruitful, and I came away with what was verily M. Luchaire's treasure, - his manuscript notes, which represented years of patient and costly labor in various parts of France. The boundless kindness and confidence indicated by his intrusting these notes to me, and his subsequent interest in me and my plans, left me with an ardent desire to requite his services. It was not given to me to do so during his lifetime. If, however, I succeed in the following pages in bringing English readers who do not know French to enjoy the work of this charming Frenchman who did not know English, I shall feel that I have in some measure appropriately repaid the debt I owe him. It is, however, not only, or even chiefly, my personal relations with this French scholar that prompted me to undertake this translation. I am a firm believer in social history, indeed in anything that will bring out the human side of the past. It is for this reason that Luchaire's work appealed to me and that it is now placed before English readers. That the book has its shortcomings I know; that it is prolix in some parts and often repetitious I am fully aware; but that, even as it is, it is worth translating I am confident. That the translation will meet with the approval of its readers I am not so sure. It is intended to be a faithful rendering of the original, without deviation in any essential. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers on aspects of the growth of royal government during the century. The size and jurisdiction of English royal government underwent sustained development in the thirteenth century, an understanding of which is crucial to a balanced view of medieval English society. The papers here follow three central themes: the development of central government, law and justice, and the crown and the localities. Examined within this framework are bureaucracy and enrolment under John and his contemporaries; the Royal Chancery; the adaptation of the Exchequer in response to the rapidly changing demands of the crown; the introduction of a licensing system for mortmain alienations; the administration of local justice; women as sheriffs; and a Nottinghamshire study examining the tensions between the role of the king as manorial lord and as monarch. Download or read book When The World Spoke French written by Marc Fumaroli and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Review Books Original During the eighteenth century, from the death of Louis XIV until the Revolution, French culture set the standard for all of Europe. In Sweden, Austria, Italy, Spain, England, Russia, and Germany, among kings and queens, diplomats, military leaders, writers, aristocrats, and artists, French was the universal language of politics and intellectual life. In When the World Spoke French, Marc Fumaroli presents a gallery of portraits of Europeans and Americans who conversed and corresponded in French, along with excerpts from their letters or other writings. These men and women, despite their differences, were all irresistibly attracted to the ideal of human happiness inspired by the Enlightenment, whose capital was Paris and whose king was Voltaire. Whether they were in Paris or far away, speaking French connected them in spirit with all those who desired to emulate Parisian tastes, style of life, and social pleasures. Their stories are testaments to the appeal of that famous “sweetness of life” nourished by France and its language.
