Book excerpt: Philadelphia is a city of interesting contrasts that blend together the historic beginnings of America with tall, contemporary glass towers. These photos reveal a new way to see Philadelphia that challenges the viewer to ponder the unique perspective as a pedestrian walking the streets as I did, stopping to allow the reflection of the city emerge in the moment. People describe my work as modern, dreamy, geometric, complex and often beautiful. I call it "refection photography" in that every photograph is trained on the reflection in a building's window. These reflective compositions blends together geometry, color, interiors and exteriors, heat, light and natural elements to surprising results that defy traditional category. Each of the photos in my collection come alive through a combination of momentary elements, separately or together: the time of day, angle of sun, the color and quality of the glass, surface heat and length of shot, interior colors, exterior motion, lines and space of subjects, people, displays, height, reflection and of course how clean the surface. Coming together one day and disappearing the next.

The common thread is that they are all authored by our readers. You will find many different points of view. Book Herbert Hoover

Download or read book Herbert Hoover written by William E. Leuchtenburg and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republican efficiency expert whose economic boosterism met its match in the Great Depression Catapulted into national politics by his heroic campaigns to feed Europe during and after World War I, Herbert Hoover—an engineer by training—exemplified the economic optimism of the 1920s. As president, however, Hoover was sorely tested by America's first crisis of the twentieth century: the Great Depression. Renowned New Deal historian William E. Leuchtenburg demonstrates how Hoover was blinkered by his distrust of government and his belief that volunteerism would solve all social ills. As Leuchtenburg shows, Hoover's attempts to enlist the aid of private- sector leaders did little to mitigate the Depression, and he was routed from office by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932. From his retirement at Stanford University, Hoover remained a vocal critic of the New Deal and big government until the end of his long life. Leuchtenburg offers a frank, thoughtful portrait of this lifelong public servant, and shrewdly assesses Hoover's policies and legacy in the face of one of the darkest periods of American history.

In each chapter, the themes of struggle, survival, and resilience demonstrate the power of narrative reflection as well as the role that narrative therapy might play for clinical mental health professionals. Together, co-editors Lucy S. Raizman and Bea Hollander-Goldfein and contributors Kilian Fritsch, Ruthy Kaiser, Peter Capper, Lyn Groome, Margaret S. Roth, and Michael Izzo engaged in a process that put each of them in closer contact with their own lives.

Book excerpt: Carole looks back at how God was working in her life from the beginning. This reflection reveals that He was in every circumstance preparing her for what lay ahead. He drew her close, set her apart, moved her out of her comfort zone and showed His wonderful love in the lives of her husband, her sons, and in the people He put in her path. God equipped Carole with a delightful sense of humor that has seen her through many embarrassing moments and many trying circumstances. It shines through in her book as evidence of God's grace. The stories about their two sons, now in their late forties, will absolutely delight you with their childlike faith.
