Download or read book Address by the Union League of Philadelphia written by Philadelphia Union League and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address by the Union League of Philadelphia: To the Citizens of Pennsylvania, in Favor of the Re-Election of Abraham Lincoln The day rapidly approaches when some one must be selected to exercise the power and influence of the Executive branch of our Government during another term. The time has been when the character of the person chosen has excited but little interest beyond the circle of active politicians, because in the midst of peace and abounding prosperity, it was not considered of much importance. Easy duties do not demand great talents or peculiar qualities, and the duties of the Executive office are not difficult in such quiet times as it has been the happiness of our country to enjoy during the larger part of its history. But now our position is very different. We are in the midst of a great civil war, which has raged for more than three years, the issue of which is still doubtful, and which may, when the day for making a choice arrives, still be calling for more sacrifices to be offered on its bloody altar. The stake in this war is no less than our country. The object of our enemies is to destroy it - ours is to defend it, to keep its domain entire as we received it from our fathers, to keep its name and fame high, as of yore, on the roll of the nations of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Union League of Philadelphia: In Commemoration of the Eighty-Ninth Anniversary of American Independence, July 4th, 1865 The Union League of Philadelphia, in pursuance of public notice, held a meeting in the Academy of Music on this day, in commemoration of the 89th Anniversary of American Independence. At 12 o'clock precisely the members of the League entered the building, and took their places on the stage, where seats had been provided. Morton McMichael, Esq., one of the Vice-Presidents of the League, took the chair, with Charles Gibbons, Esq., the Orator of the Day, on his right, and Daniel Dougherty, Esq., the Reader of the Declaration, on his left. A large number of the clergy occupied seats on the right of the members. The proceedings were opened by an appropriate prayer from the Rev. George Dana Boardman. "The Star-Spangled Banner" was then sung by the choir of the League. During the final chorus, the members and the whole audience rose, giving to the performance a most impressive effect. Book Philadelphia in the World War

Download or read book Philadelphia in the World War written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia in the World War: 1914-1919 Philadelphia's patriotism and unswerving loyalty to the Nation were never more plainly manifested than during the World War. Her people gave without stint, of their time and their means; many were wounded, and some, alas, made the supreme sacrifice at their Country's call. It is appropriate that a record of their work shall be preserved in permanent form for widespread circulation. Interest and sentiment alike suggest that all information concerning the activities of Philadelphians, whether in military, naval, civil, industrial or financial circles during the war, shall be preserved for historical reasons, and as an inspiration to future generations. The Philadelphia War History Committee, which was appointed September 22, 1919, by the Honorable Thomas B. Smith, then Mayor of Philadelphia, and continued in office during my administration, has been steadily at work since its appointment, gathering material for a comprehensive history, and while it has not been possible to bring within the compass of a single volume all the details of the work of our people, it is hoped that this volume will be welcomed by every Philadelphian as a worthy memorial of the services of our fellow citizens during one of the most vital chapters in the history of the United States. Book Civil War Biographies from the Western Waters

Download or read book Civil War Biographies from the Western Waters written by Myron J. Smith, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1861 to 1865, the Civil War raged along the great rivers of the Ohio and Mississippi valleys. While various Civil War biographies exist, none have been devoted exclusively to participants in the Western river war as waged down the Mississippi to the mouth of the Red River, and up the Ohio, the Tennessee and the Cumberland. Based on the Official Records, county histories, newspapers and internet sources, this is the first work to profile personnel involved in the fighting on these great streams. Included in this biographical encyclopedia are Union and Confederate naval officers down to the rank of mate; enlisted sailors who won the Medal of Honor, or otherwise distinguished themselves or who wrote accounts of life on the gunboats; army officers and leaders who played a direct role in combat along Western waters; political officials who influenced river operations; civilian steamboat captains and pilots who participated in wartime logistics; and civilian contractors directly involved, including shipbuilders, dam builders, naval constructors and munitions experts. Each of the biographies includes (where known) birth, death and residence data; unit organization or ship; involvement in the river war; pre- and post-war careers; and source documentation. Hundreds of individuals are given their first historic recognition.

Download or read book The Imagined Civil War written by Alice Fahs and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work of cultural history, Alice Fahs explores a little-known and fascinating side of the Civil War--the outpouring of popular literature inspired by the conflict. From 1861 to 1865, authors and publishers in both the North and the South produced a remarkable variety of war-related compositions, including poems, songs, children's stories, romances, novels, histories, and even humorous pieces. Fahs mines these rich but long-neglected resources to recover the diversity of the war's political and social meanings. Instead of narrowly portraying the Civil War as a clash between two great, white armies, popular literature offered a wide range of representations of the conflict and helped shape new modes of imagining the relationships of diverse individuals to the nation. Works that explored the war's devastating impact on white women's lives, for example, proclaimed the importance of their experiences on the home front, while popular writings that celebrated black manhood and heroism in the wake of emancipation helped readers begin to envision new roles for blacks in American life. Recovering a lost world of popular literature, The Imagined Civil War adds immeasurably to our understanding of American life and letters at a pivotal point in our history.

Book Civil War Pharmacy

  • Author : Michael A Flannery
  • Publisher : SIU Press
  • Release : 2017-06-16
  • ISBN : 080933593X

Download or read book Civil War Pharmacy written by Michael A Flannery and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Civil War began, the U.S. pharmaceutical industry was concentrated almost exclusively in Philadelphia and was dominated by just a few major firms; when the war ended, it was poised to expand nationwide. Civil War Pharmacy is the first book to delineate how the growing field of pharmacy gained respect and traction in, and even distinction from, the medical world because of the large-scale manufacture and dispersion of drug supplies and therapeutics during the Civil War. In this second edition, Flannery captures the full societal involvement in drug provision, on both the Union and Confederate sides, and places it within the context of what was then assumed about health and healing. He examines the roles of physicians, hospital stewards, and nurses—both male and female—and analyzes how the blockade of Southern ports meant fewer pharmaceutical supplies were available for Confederate soldiers, resulting in reduced Confederate troop strength. Flannery provides a thorough overview of the professional, economic, and military factors comprising pharmacy from 1861 to 1865 and includes the long-term consequences of the war for the pharmaceutical profession. Winner (first edition), Archivists and Librarians in the History of the Health Sciences, Best Book Award
