Book Surveying and Monitoring of Animal Genetic Resources

Download or read book Surveying and Monitoring of Animal Genetic Resources written by and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, adopted in 2007, is the first internationally agreed framework for the management of biodiversity in the livestock sector. It calls for the development of technical guidelines to support countries in their implementation efforts. Guidelines on the Preparation of national strategies and action plans for animal genetic resources were published by FAO in 2009 and are being complemented by a series of guideline publications addressing specific technical subjects. These guidelines on Surveying and monitoring of animal genetic resources address Strategic Priority Area 1 of the Global Plan of Action - "Characterization, inventory and monitoring of trends and associated risks". They complement, in particular, the guidelines on phenotypic characterization and on molecular genetic characterization. They have been endorsed by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. Knowledge of animal genetic resources is fundamental to their sustainable use, development and conservation. These guidelines provide advice on how to draw up a strategy for meeting national needs for data and information on animal genetic resources. They also offer practical advice on how to plan and implement an animal genetic resources survey - covering the whole process from planning the survey to disseminating the outputs and taking the first steps in translating results into action. A range of surveying tools are presented, and advice is offered on how they can be combined and integrated within an effective strategy that addresses both the task of acquiring a baseline of data on animal genetic resources and the subsequent task of monitoring changes over time. Book THE SECOND REPORT ON THE STATE OF THE WORLD s ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES FOR FOOD AND AGRICULTURE

Download or read book THE SECOND REPORT ON THE STATE OF THE WORLD s ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES FOR FOOD AND AGRICULTURE written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal genetic resource diversity underpins the supply livestock products and services across a wide range of production environments. It promotes resilience and serves as a basis for adapting livestock management to changing conditions. It is vital to livelihoods of many of the world’s poor people. It can contribute to the delivery of ecosystem services such as landscape management and the maintenance of wildlife habitats. However, it is often undervalued, underused and under threat. This report updates the global assessment provided in the first report on The State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, published in 2007. It focuses particularly on changes that have occurred during the period since the first report was published. It serves as a basis for a review, and potential update, of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, which since 2007 has provided an agreed international framework for the management of livestock biodiversity. Drawing on 129 country reports, it presents an analysis of the state of livestock diversity, the influence of livestock-sector trends on the management of animal genetic resources, the state of capacity to manage animal genetic resources, including legal and policy frameworks, and the state of the art in tools and methods for characterization, valuation, use, development and conservation.

Book Genomic characterization of animal genetic resources

Download or read book Genomic characterization of animal genetic resources written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular biotechnologies have developed rapidly and substantially since the release of these previous guidelines. The livestock sector has been an active participant in the so-called “genomic revolution.” Advancements in the sequencing of genomes and related genotyping methods have created opportunities for gathering much more information on the molecular level than ever possible, at a faster rate, and for exponentially decreased costs. Scientists and other livestock stakeholders in countries with highly developed economies have been among the main beneficiaries of this revolution. However, the greatly decreased costs of genomic applications have also created opportunities in countries with developing and transitional economies. In many instances, the lack of awareness of these opportunities and in the technical capacity for the full application of genomic tools may represent a greater obstacle to their utilization than the expenses involved. The development of these guidelines and the subsequent application of the information contained herein may help to bridge this gap, bringing new opportunities to light and transferring knowledge that can be used to increase the genetic characterization of AnGR and subsequently improve the sustainable use and conservation of livestock genetic diversity.

Download or read book The State of the World s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture written by Barbara Rischkowsky and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable management of the world's livestock genetic diversity is of vital importance to agriculture, food production, rural development and the environment. "The State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture" is the first global assessment of these resources. Drawing on 169 Country Reports, contributions from a number of international organizations and 12 specially commissioned thematic studies, it presents an analysis of the state of agricultural biodiversity in the livestock sector - origins and development, uses and values, distribution and exchange, risk status and threats - and of capacity to manage these resources - institutions, policies and legal frameworks, structured breeding activities and conservation programmes. Needs and challenges are assessed in the context of the forces driving change in livestock production systems. Tools and methods to enhance the use and development of animal genetic resources are explored in sections on the state of the art in characterization, genetic improvement, economic evaluation and conservation. The main findings of the report are summarized in "The State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture - in brief," of which the Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish versions can be found on the attached CD-ROM and are also available separately in printed form. As well providing a technical reference document, the country-based preparation of "The State of the World" has led to a process of policy development and a "Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources," which once adopted, will provide an agenda for action by the international community. Book Utilisation and conservation of farm animal genetic resources

Download or read book Utilisation and conservation of farm animal genetic resources written by Kor Oldenbroek and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The genetic diversity comprised in farm animal species and breeds is an important resource in livestock systems. For several reasons, within the different species used for food production, only a few breeds are developed towards high-output breeds fitting in high-input systems. In this process many breeds are set aside from the food producing livestock systems. These breeds will be faced with extinction unless new functions for these breeds are found. This is a real threat for the genetic diversity within species. This book is intended to give insight into the issues of the utilisation and conservation of farm animal genetic resources towards a broad group of readers interested in these subjects. The insight is presented as applications of population, molecular and quantitative genetics that can be used to take appropriate decisions in utilisation and conservation programmes. A previous edition of this book is a key resource in courses worldwide and cited in many scientific publications. The first two chapters discuss the decisions to be made in utilisation and conservation. Chapter 3 surveys the different ways in which the diversity we observe within a species can be characterised. Chapter 4 illustrates recent results using this theory for utilisation and conservation purposes. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 give theoretical backgrounds necessary to make decisions and chapters 8 and 9 present the operation and practical implications of selection and conservation schemes."

Book Phenotypic Characterization of Local Chickens

Download or read book Phenotypic Characterization of Local Chickens written by Michael Augustus Entsuah and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution and density of birds vary from place to place. Local chickens, which are not properly characterized, have been found to vary widely in body size conformation, plumage colour and other phenotypic characteristics (Mogesse, 2007). The productivity of indigenous birds under the rural production systems has been reported to be very low (Teketel, 1986). This low productivity may be attributed to lack of improved poultry breeds, the presence of predators, the incidence of chicken diseases, poor feeding and management factors(Alemu, 1995; Alemu and Tadelle, 1997). Hence, the FAO of the United Nations has proposed an integrated programme for the global management of genetic resources on an international level. This is being developed by FAO, with the main objective of assisting countries by providing extensive searchable databases and guidelines for better characterization, utilization and conservation of animal genetic resources. Accordingly, this study sought to unearth the variation among local chickens in other part of the country in terms of feather distribution and structure, the presence of genes responsible for such variation and other morphological features.

Download or read book Phenotypic Characterization of indigenous Chicken Ecotypes in Northwollo Amhara Regional State Ethiopia written by Addisu Hailu and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Agrarian Studies, Bahir Dar University, course: animal genetics and breeding, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACT Phenotypic characterization of indigenous chicken ecotypes was conducted in North Wollo from January 2011 to May 2012 with the objectives of characterizing indigenous chicken and their production system. Simultaneously, identification of development intervention for improved utilization of chicken genetic resources was also identified. In the first part of data collection, one focused group discussion per agro-ecological zones was held. Then, administration of well-structured questionnaire and morphometric measurement were employed. Measured quantitative traits of chicken among the three altitudes were analyzed by linear model of SAS 2002 for male and female chickens separately. Subsequently, mean value of each traits were compared using Tukey’s mean comparison method. Multivariate analysis of principal component analysis, canonical discriminant, step-wise discriminant and clustering analysis was performed by SPSS 19.0 for male and female chicken ecotype separately. Nechi (17.6%), Tikur (12.6%) and Key (10.8%) plumage colour were found dominantly all over the study area. Findings of the focus group discussion revealed that there were morphologically differences among chickens of high altitude, mid altitude and low altitude study areas. Similarly, findings from the semi-structured questioner revealed that indigenous chicken ecotypes are dual-purpose. The critical constraints of scavenging chicken production were disease (60.13%) predators (20.59%) and feed shortage (19.28%). Number of egg lay/clutch (37.91%) and plumage colour (37.58%) were the major preferred trait by the farmers in the study area. For qualitative and quantitative study, 715 sample chickens were recorded by category of agro-ecology. Linear measurements on six traits were taken from 210 mature male and 305 mature female chickens. The overall mean body weight of indigenous male and female chickens was 1500.97gm and 1253.36gm respectively. The overall age at sexual maturity for male and female was 24.25 ± 0.04 and 23.84 ± 0.05 weeks respectively. There was highly significant difference (p
