Book excerpt: For over a century progress in aerospace has been phenomenal. Flying Higher and Faster is a collection of stories and photos relating to the Author's career history and experiences. A few experiences from his youth are included. The book contains fragments of aerospace history from the latter half of the 20th century and descriptions of how they related to his career experiences. The final chapters discuss where he thinks the country (and the world) should be heading regarding aeronautics research and the human exploration of space. Technological progress since demonstration of the airplane by the Wright brothers in 1903 has been remarkable. The author was very fortunate to have been an American pilot and astronaut when some of this was happening during the latter half of the 20th century. It is his opinion that America should continue its lead in aeronautics by having a high level of governmental research support and continue to spearhead the human exploration of deep space.

Book Phenomenology and the Social World

Download or read book Phenomenology and the Social World written by Laurie Spurling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term ‘phenomenology’ has become almost as over-used and emptied of meaning as that other word from Continental Philosophy, namely ‘existentialism’. Yet Husserl, who first put forward the phenomenological method, considered it a rigorous alternative to positivism, and in the hands of Merleau-Ponty, a disciple of Husserl in France, phenomenology became a way of gaining a disciplined and coherent perspective on the world in which we live. When this study originally published in 1977 there were only a few books in English on Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy. It introduced the reader and suggested how his thought might throw light on some of the assumptions and presuppositions of certain contemporary forms of Anglo-Saxon philosophy and social science. It also demonstrates how phenomenology seeks to unite philosophy and social science, rather than define them as mutually exclusive domains of knowledge.

Book Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World

Download or read book Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World written by Katie Arnold and published by Parallax Press. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Zen study wrapped in a memoir of destruction and healing written by an elite ultrarunner as she struggles to make it to the other side of a life-shattering injury with her sanity, and her marriage, intact After flipping her raft days away from help on a trip down the remote Salmon River, Katie Arnold’s shattered leg tests both her spirit and her marriage for years to come. It also reignites her meditation practice and motivates her to dive into Zen in search of healing. Before the accident, Katie was an elite ultrarunner with a simmering but adequate marriage who avoided being indoors whenever possible. But who is she afterwards? In the midst of hardship, Katie turns for support to the Zen practice she had long dabbled in. Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World is a Zen study wrapped in a memoir that tells the story of a search for stillness by a woman born for wildness. Spanning roughly two years, from shortly before the accident through the long, uncertain healing of both leg and marriage, it is a personal narrative of that tumultuous time nested inside meditations on Zen. Having gone from a reluctant spiritualist to a Zen practitioner over the course of a decade, Katie Arnold offers unique company for those seeking nature’s exquisite highs as well as for creatives, spiritualists, and sensualists who want to slow down and examine the possibilities of a well-lived life. As the late Japanese master Shunryu Suzuki wrote, “Sometimes a flashing will come through the dark sky.” These brief flashings are enlightenment—moments when we suddenly feel as if we’re part of everything, and everything’s part of us. This book is about how to experience the flashings when they come, and about what they mean for how we live our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carrie's Phenomenal Journey vicariously takes you along on this wild journey of love. We stroll Parisian streets; hike the sandy roads of Niamey, Niger; mingle with people; and immerse ourselves in cultures. Sometimes we watch, laugh, or sigh and assimilate together. "I opened Carrie's Phenomenal Journey and was smitten with a young African American girl's dream of an education. I followed this heroine--and I don't use that word lightly--through falling in love to the betrayal and divorce. Carrie's dream had not died, and soon she found hope and fulfillment in education and a promising career in education. But life was nowhere over. I celebrated as Carrie moves to Paris to study the language in preparation for her service in Niger, West Africa. I flew over the Sahara desert with Carrie, saw the blue men of the Taureg, and clapped with the colorful tribe women under Carrie's nurturing wing. As her days in the field came to a close Carrie returns to family and creating a home in Jacksonville, Florida." --Carol O'Dell, author of Mothering Mother: A Daughter's Humorous and Heartbreaking Memoir "An informative and entertaining book written by someone who spent years living with the peoples of Africa." --AMCS Louis Myers, USN Retired
