Book Phenomenal Stories Vol 2 No 11

Download or read book Phenomenal Stories Vol 2 No 11 written by Shawn M Tomlinson and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the November 2019 issue of Phenomenal Stories, we pay tribute to the man who fathered the Golden Age of Science Fiction. John W. Champbell Jr. had his flaws, but when he took the helm at Astounding Stories in October 1937, the world was about to change. Over the next few years, modern science fiction was born with writers such as Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and A.E. van Vogt. Plus, of course, we have other great fiction and non-fiction from some of the usual suspects, including J.D. Hayes-Canell and Richard H. Nilsen. We continue the classic and only Conan novel, 'Hour of the Dragon," by Robert E. Howard, and the strange early scientific novel, 'Girl in the Golden Atom' by Ray Cummings. Phenomenal Stories is a tribute to the speculative pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s, such as Weird Tales, Amazing Stories and Astounding Science Fiction. Shawn M. Tomlinson serves as editor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence-based medicine (EBM) was introduced to the best benefit of the patient. It has transformed the pathophysiological approach to the outcome approach of today's treatments. Disease-oriented to patient-oriented medicine. And, for some, daily medical practice from patient oriented to case oriented medicine. Evidence has changed the paternalistic way of medical practice. And gave room to patients, who show a tendency towards partnership. Although EBM has introduced a different way of thinking in the day to day medical practice, there is plenty of space for implementation and improvement. This book is meant to provoke the thinker towards the unlimited borders of caring for the patient.

Download or read book Luck and the Irish written by R. F. Foster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy Foster is one of Ireland's leading historians, the author of the much acclaimed two-volume biography of Yeats as well as the definitive history Modern Ireland, which has been hailed as "dazzling" (New York Times Book Review) and "elegant, erudite, wise, witty" (Irish Times). Now, this brilliant writer offers a "short and combative" account of Ireland's astonishing transformation over the last three decades. Has there really been an "economic miracle"? Where does the explosion of cultural energy in music, literature, and theater come from? Has the power of the Catholic Church really crumbled? Focusing largely on contemporary events, living people, current controversies, and popular culture, Luck and the Irish explores these questions and raises other provocative questions of its own. Foster looks at the astonishing volte-face undertaken by Sinn Fein, eventually taking office in a state they had once fought to destroy. He describes how Catholicism, once the bedrock of Irish identity, has been decisively compromised, as evidenced by the exploitation and abuse scandals and the drastic decline in devotions. At the same time, the position of women in Irish society has been transformed, with the growth of feminism, a revolution in sexual attitudes, far more women in the work force, the ascendancy of President Mary Robinson, and the movement of women to front-rank Cabinet posts--all of which have put the position of Irish women ahead of that in many European nations. Many old molds have been broken in Irish society over the last 30 years, and the immediate results have been breath-taking. But are these developments really as permanent or even as beneficial as they appear? Everyone curious about the recent past, the burgeoning present, and the unclear future of Ireland will want to read this superbly written and deeply thoughtful book.

Book Gough Whitlam

Download or read book Gough Whitlam written by Jenny Hocking and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gough Whitlam, Australia's twenty-first prime minister, swept to power in December 1972, ending twenty-three years of conservative rule. In barely three years Whitlam's dramatic reform agenda would transform Australia. It was an ascendancy bitterly resented by some, never accepted by others, and ended with dismissal by the Governor-General just three years later—an outcome that polarised debate and left many believing the full story had not been told. In this much-anticipated second volume of her biography of Gough Whitlam, Jenny Hocking has used previously unearthed archival material and extensive interviews with Gough Whitlam, his family, colleagues and foes, to bring the key players in these dramatic events to life. The identity of the mysterious 'third man', who counselled the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr, in his decision to sack the twice-elected Whitlam government and appoint Malcolm Fraser as prime minister is confirmed here by Kerr himself, as the High Court justice Sir Anthony Mason, and the full story of his involvement is now revealed for the first time. From Kerr's private papers Hocking details months of secret meetings and conversations between Kerr and Mason in the lead-up to the dismissal, that had remained hidden for over thirty-seven years. In response to these revelations Sir Anthony Mason released an extensive public statement, acknowledging his role and disclosing additional information that is fully explored in this new edition. This definitive biography takes us behind the political intrigue to reveal a devastated Whitlam and his personal struggle in the aftermath of the dismissal, the unfulfilled years that followed and his eventual political renewal as Australia's ambassador to UNESCO. It also tells, through the highs and the lows of his decades of public life, how Whitlam depended absolutely on the steadfast support of the love of his life, his wife, Margaret. For this is also the story of a remarkable marriage and an enduring partnership. The truth of this tumultuous period in Australia's history is finally revealed in Gough Whitlam: His Time
