Book Phase Equilibria and Density Calculations in the Critical Region

Download or read book Phase Equilibria and Density Calculations in the Critical Region written by G. F. Chou and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A phenomenological procedure is proposed to correct a vdW-type classical equation of state to represent phase equilibria and densities in the critical region. This procedure consists of two corrections. The first correction enables the equation to locate the true critical point using a volume-translation technique; the volume translation is a function of the distance from the critical point. A temperature-dependent variable related to the isothermal compressibility is used to characterize this distance. This volume-translation method preserves the vapor-pressure curve predicted from the original equation; it also improves liquid-density predictions both within and outside the critical region. The second correction consists of a contribution to the residual Helmbolz energy which accounts for density fluctuation in the critical region. This near-critical correction is characterized by a distance variable similar to that used in volume translation. The corrected equation reproduces the experimental critical point and predicts coexistence curves and pressure-density isotherms in the critical region flatter than those predicted from original equation; it also represents better isochoric heat capacities in the critical region. Since the corrected equation is analytic, it does not describe all theoretically-desired limiting behavior at the critical point.

Book Continuous Thermodynamics for Phase Equilibria and Enthalpy Calculations

Download or read book Continuous Thermodynamics for Phase Equilibria and Enthalpy Calculations written by G. F. Chou and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Section I.A thermodynamic framework has been developed for multistage adiabatic flash calculations of complex mixtures using continuous thermodynamics. This framework is an extension of that for single-stage flash calculations reported earlier (GRI-85/0242). The multistage framework is applied to an absorber for recovering intermediate hydrocarbons from natural gas. The lean oil used for the absorption process is a continuous mixture of heavy paraffins. The amount of solvent loss calculated using continuous thermodynamics compares favorably with that calculated using the exact method where all components are considered in the calculation. By contrast, the pseudocomponent method may underpredict the correct amount of solvent loss by 50%. Section II. A thermodynamic framework is proposed for improving an equation of state for phase equilibrium calculations near the vapor-liquid critical region. We assume that the anomalous behavior of fluids in the critical region is due to large-scale density fluctuations; the framework is thus based on an averaging process for the Helmholtz energy which takes density fluctuations into account.

Book Phase Equilibria in Chemical Engineering

Download or read book Phase Equilibria in Chemical Engineering written by Stanley M. Walas and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase Equilibria in Chemical Engineering is devoted to the thermodynamic basis and practical aspects of the calculation of equilibrium conditions of multiple phases that are pertinent to chemical engineering processes. Efforts have been made throughout the book to provide guidance to adequate theory and practice. The book begins with a long chapter on equations of state, since it is intimately bound up with the development of thermodynamics. Following material on basic thermodynamics and nonidealities in terms of fugacities and activities, individual chapters are devoted to equilibria primarily between pairs of phases. A few topics that do not fit into these categories and for which the state of the art is not yet developed quantitatively have been relegated to a separate chapter. The chapter on chemical equilibria is pertinent since many processes involve simultaneous chemical and phase equilibria. Also included are chapters on the evaluation of enthalpy and entropy changes of nonideal substances and mixtures, and on experimental methods. This book is intended as a reference and self-study as well as a textbook either for full courses in phase equilibria or as a supplement to related courses in the chemical engineering curriculum. Practicing engineers concerned with separation technology and process design also may find the book useful.

Book Determination of Phase Equilibria and the Critical Point Using Two phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations with Monte Carlo Sampling

Download or read book Determination of Phase Equilibria and the Critical Point Using Two phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations with Monte Carlo Sampling written by Sonal Patel and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-phase MD technique employed in this work determines the liquid and vapor phase densities from a histogram of molecular densities within phase clusters in the simulation cell using a new Monte Carlo (MC) sampling method. These equilibrium densities are then fitted in conjunction with known critical-point scaling laws to obtain the critical temperature, and the critical density. This MC post-processing method was found to be more easily implemented in code, and it is efficient and easily applied to complex, structured molecules. This method has been successfully applied and benchmarked for a simple Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid and a structured molecule, propane. Various degrees of internal flexibility in the propane models showed little effect on the coexisting dessities far from critical point, but internal flexibility (angle bending and bond vibrations) seemed to affect the saturated liquid densities in the near-critical region, changing the critical temperature by approximately 20 K. Shorter cutoffs were also found to affect the phase dome and the location of the critical point.

Book Thermodynamics of Phase Equilibria in Food Engineering

Download or read book Thermodynamics of Phase Equilibria in Food Engineering written by Camila Gambini Pereira and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamics of Phase Equilibria in Food Engineering is the definitive book on thermodynamics of equilibrium applied to food engineering. Food is a complex matrix consisting of different groups of compounds divided into macronutrients (lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins), and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals). The quality characteristics of food products associated with the sensorial, physical and microbiological attributes are directly related to the thermodynamic properties of specific compounds and complexes that are formed during processing or by the action of diverse interventions, such as the environment, biochemical reactions, and others. In addition, in obtaining bioactive substances using separation processes, the knowledge of phase equilibria of food systems is essential to provide an efficient separation, with a low cost in the process and high selectivity in the recovery of the desired component. This book combines theory and application of phase equilibria data of systems containing food compounds to help food engineers and researchers to solve complex problems found in food processing. It provides support to researchers from academia and industry to better understand the behavior of food materials in the face of processing effects, and to develop ways to improve the quality of the food products. Presents the fundamentals of phase equilibria in the food industry Describes both classic and advanced models, including cubic equations of state and activity coefficient Encompasses distillation, solid-liquid extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, adsorption, crystallization and supercritical fluid extraction Explores equilibrium in advanced systems, including colloidal, electrolyte and protein systems

Book Phase Equilibrium in Mixtures

Download or read book Phase Equilibrium in Mixtures written by M. B. King and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase Equilibrium in Mixtures deals with phase equilibrium and the methods of correlating, checking, and predicting phase data. Topics covered range from latent heat and vapor pressure to dilute solutions, ideal and near-ideal solutions, and consistency tests. Molecular considerations and their use for the prediction and correlation of data are also discussed. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the role of thermodynamics and the criteria for equilibrium between phases, along with fugacity and the thermodynamic functions of mixing. The discussion then turns to some of the phase phenomena which may be encountered in chemical engineering practice; methods of correlating and extending vapor pressure data and practical techniques for calculating latent heats from these data; the behavior of dilute solutions both at low and high pressures for reacting and non-reacting systems; and the behavior of ideal and near-ideal solutions. The remaining chapters explore non-ideal solutions at normal pressures; practical methods for testing the thermodynamic consistency of phase data; and the extent to which the broad aspects of phase behavior may be interpreted in the light of simple molecular considerations. This book is intended primarily for graduate chemical engineers but should also be of interest to those graduates in physics or chemistry who need to use phase equilibrium data.

Book High Pressure Fluid Phase Equilibria

Download or read book High Pressure Fluid Phase Equilibria written by Ulrich K Deiters and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High pressures play a more and more important role in modern technology. Examples are the supercritical fluid extraction of medical drugs and dyes from biological material, the handling of compressed or liquefied gases (including natural gas or hydrogen), the operation of modern thermal power plants, or various technical processes for controlled particle formation. High-Pressure Fluid Phase Equilibria, Second Edition enables understanding of the complicated phase behaviour that fluid or fluid mixtures (liquids, gases, or supercritical phases) can exhibit at elevated pressures. The underlying thermodynamic equations are explained, and robust algorithms for the computation of such equilibria (including solid–fluid equilibria) are proposed. Since the publication of the first edition of this book there have been many new developments, for instance differential equation methods for the computation of phase equilibria, accurate numerical differentiation, high-precision equations of state (e.g., the GERG model). Moreover, more detail and explanation has been added on important topics that were only briefly examined in the original book to better assist the reader, such as expansion processes and chemical reactions). The book remains invaluable as a single resource for grasping the intricacies of fluid phase behaviour. It enables readers to write or improve their own computer programs for the calculation of phase equilibria. It will appeal to graduate students of chemical engineering and university research staff involved in chemical engineering of supercritical fluids or the physical chemistry of fluids; the book can also serve as the basis of lectures or advanced students’ seminars. Comprehensively presents the complex world of phase equilibria (binary and ternary) and the various methods for computing phase equilibria, whilst carefully considering the relevant pressure and temperature ranges Introduces phase diagram classes, how to recognize them, and how to identify their characteristic features Presents rational nomenclature of binary fluid phase diagrams Includes problems and solutions for self-testing, exercises, or seminars New to this Edition: Presentation of the phase equilibria models is extended and expanded There are now more descriptions on more equations of state, especially the PCSAFT EoS Features new chapter on nonisothermal applications and chemically reactive systems and extensive updates and additions to all existing chapters
