Book Phase change materials microcapsules reinforced with graphene oxide for energy storage technology

Download or read book Phase change materials microcapsules reinforced with graphene oxide for energy storage technology written by Bowei Du and published by OAE Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2023-05-29 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase change materials (PCMs) are considered one of the most promising energy storage methods owing to their beneficial effects on a larger latent heat, smaller volume change, and easier controlling than other materials. PCMs are widely used in solar energy heating, industrial waste heat utilization, energy conservation in the construction industry, and other fields. To avoid leakage, phase separation, and volatile problems of PCMs, the encapsulation technique typically uses organic polymer materials as shell structures of microcapsules. Furthermore, using inorganic materials to enhance the thermal property of phase change microcapsules is a popular approach in recent research. Especially, graphene oxide (GO) with high thermal conductivity was used as a common thermal conducting additive to improve the thermal performance of phase change microcapsules. Due to its amphiphilic property, GO combined with PCM microcapsules can achieve a variety of nanostructures for thermal energy storage. In this paper, four aspects have been summarized: configuration of PCMs, methods of combining GO with phase change microcapsules, position and content of GO, and applications of PCM/GO microcapsules. This work attempts to discuss preparation methods and heat-conducting properties of the PCM/GO microcapsules, which helps to better promote the application-targeted design and greatly improve the thermal properties of PCM microcapsules for various applications.

Book Design and Fabrication of Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials for Energy Thermal Energy Storage and Other Versatile Applications

Download or read book Design and Fabrication of Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials for Energy Thermal Energy Storage and Other Versatile Applications written by Tahira Mahmood and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microencapsulated phase change materials have been considered as potential candidates to overcome the global energy shortage, as these materials can provide a viable method for storing thermal energy and offering consistent energy management by controllable heat release in desirable environments. Microencapsulation technology offers a method for overcoming the trouble associated with the handling of solid,Äìliquid phase change materials (PCMs) via encapsulating PCMs with thin or tiny shells which are known as ,Äòmicrocapsules,Äô. Microcapsule shells not only keep PCMs isolated from the surrounding materials but also provide a stable structure and sufficient surface for PCMs to enhance heat transfer. Thus microencapsulation technology received remarkable attention from fundamental studies to industrial growth in recent years. In order to provide a reliable source of information on recent progress and development in microencapsulated PCMs, this chapter emphases on methods and techniques for the encapsulation of PCMs with a diversity of shell materials from traditional organic polymers to novel inorganic materials to pursue high encapsulation efficiency, excellent thermal energy-storage performance and long-term operation durability. The chapter also highlights the design of bi- and multi-functional PCM-based microcapsules by fabricating various functional shells in a multilayered structure to meet the growing demand for versatile applications.

Book Preparation and Characterization of Bio based PCM Microcapsules for Thermal Energy Storage

Download or read book Preparation and Characterization of Bio based PCM Microcapsules for Thermal Energy Storage written by Maryam Fashandi and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase change materials (PCM) have gained extensive attention in thermal energy storage applications. During their phase transition, the energy can be stored in or released from PCM. While changing from solid state to liquid state, PCM start to flow. Encapsulation is a widely-used technique to prevent PCM from migrating and reacting with their environment. In the first phase of the thesis, microencapsulation of 100% bio-based (organic) PCM microcapsules by solvent evaporation and oil-in-water emulsification was investigated under different conditions, resulting in optimal properties. For the second phase, the focus was on the studies of inorganic PCM, which have higher latent heat of melting, higher thermal conductivity and lower price than the organic PCM. However, their supercooling, phase segregation, and hydrophilic nature have caused major challenges to their applications. Tuning the thermal properties, including crystallization temperature and phase segregation of inorganic PCM by using bio-based nanoparticles and other additives was investigated in the second part of the research. Due to the hydrophilic nature of the inorganic PCM, a double emulsion (water in oil in water) solvent evaporation technique was explored for encapsulation with a polymeric shell. The challenges and strategies for supercooling prevention and encapsulating the hydrophilic PCM were investigated.

Book Micro nanoencapsulated Phase Change Materials PCMs Toward High Temperature Thermal Energy Storage Applications

Download or read book Micro nanoencapsulated Phase Change Materials PCMs Toward High Temperature Thermal Energy Storage Applications written by Hanfei Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources because of its abundancy. However, despite the long history of people practically trying to harvest thermal energy, the efficiency of thermal energy storage and application to daily life utilization is still a major limitation, especially for high temperature (>300oC) applications. Concentrating solar power(CSP) is one of the very few technologies that have been used commercially to produce electricity from solar thermal energy. Benefiting from the extra latent heat stored during melting/freezing, phase change materials (PCMs) with a high melting point are commonly used in these systems functioning as thermal energy storage (TES) and heat transfer fluid (HTF).Further, to avoid contamination from surroundings and increase heat transfer rate, tremendous effort has been dedicated to make micro/nano-sized PCMs encapsulations. Yet, until now, mostof the successful micro/nano-encapsulation techniques are not compatible with high temperatures due to the poor thermal/chemical stability of the capsules. A novel and cost effective modified sol-gel process was developed for the encapsulation of the first ever salt@silica microcapsules, which showed excellent thermal stability and reliability at high temperature. The encapsulation process was studied in detail and shown to be precisely controllable, demonstrated by different encapsulation ratios and shell thicknesses obtained. Rheological properties and thermal performance of microcapsules added HTF (solar salt) were then analyzed with the highest effective heat capacity enhancement of 11.0% obtained. Binary carbonate salt micro particles were then encapsulated via the same method. Through the high specific heat and latent heat of the binary carbonate salt, remarkable 40.5% and 134.4% enhancement on effective heat capacity over the best commercialized product was achieved respectively for active and passive solar thermal systems. Finally, the versatility of the developed encapsulation technique was demonstrated by micro/nano-encapsulation of different materials, along with the possibility of void creation.
