Book Phase and Birefringence Aberration Correction

Download or read book Phase and Birefringence Aberration Correction written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brillouin enhanced four wave mixing phase conjugate mirror corrects phase aberrations of a coherent electromagnetic beam and birefringence induced upon that beam. The stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) phase conjugation technique is augmented to include Brillouin enhanced four wave mixing (BEFWM). A seed beam is generated by a main oscillator which arrives at the phase conjugate cell before the signal beams in order to initiate the Brillouin effect. The signal beam which is being amplified through the amplifier chain is split into two perpendicularly polarized beams. One of the two beams is chosen to be the same polarization as some component of the seed beam, the other orthogonal to the first. The polarization of the orthogonal beam is then rotated 90.degree. such that it is parallel to the other signal beam. The three beams are then focused into cell containing a medium capable of Brillouin excitation. The two signal beams are focused such that they cross the seed beam path before their respective beam waists in order to achieve BEFWM or the two signal beams are focused to a point or points contained within the focused cone angle of the seed beam to achieve seeded SBS, and thus negate the effects of all birefringent and material aberrations in the system.

Book Correction of Phase Distortion by Nonlinear Optical Techniques

Download or read book Correction of Phase Distortion by Nonlinear Optical Techniques written by R. C. Lind and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report on a program designed to explore a recently recognized property of certain nonlinear optical interactions of generating conjugate wavefronts that can be used to correct optical distortions in laser systems. These distortions include optical train aberrations, laser medium distortions, and atmospheric propagation aberrations. The program was divided into three basic areas that bridge the gap between a preliminary exploration of the applicable nonlinear processes and realization of their potential usefulness to laser systems. The areas were to measure quantitatively the properties of phase conjugation by four-wave mixing and SBS, to develop a theoretical understanding of nonlinear phase conjugation, and to determine the applicability of nonlinear phase conjugation to various systems of interest to DARPA. Experimentally Demonstrated: Four-wave reflectivity exceeding unity in the green; Complete aberration correction by four-wave mixing and SBS for severely aberrated beams (approx. 35X diffraction limit), Viable approaches to angle offset using four-wave mixing; and Input/output separation using polarization properties of four-wave mixing.

Book Wavefront Aberration Correction Using Zernike Polynomial Parameterizations of Optical Phased Arrays PREPRINT

Download or read book Wavefront Aberration Correction Using Zernike Polynomial Parameterizations of Optical Phased Arrays PREPRINT written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High performance laser communication systems require adaptive optics based wavefront correction systems to correct aberrations that result from imperfections in optical hardware and atmospheric conditions. Traditionally, deformable membrane mirrors are used for wavefront correction. These mirrors are bulky and require excessive amounts of power, both of which can be detrimental to a space application. Liquid crystal based optical phased arrays (OPAs) offer an attractive alternative to these traditional devices. This paper presents a method of correcting wavefront aberrations with an OPA device by utilizing phase reconstruction of point-source images and Zernike polynomial parameterizations of the OPA. Limitations of common OPA architectures that reduce the effectiveness of the proposed wavefront correction method will be discussed. A simulation will demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Book High Average Power Pulsed Phase Conjugate Laser with Birefringence Correction Revision 1

Download or read book High Average Power Pulsed Phase Conjugate Laser with Birefringence Correction Revision 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nd:YAG rod lasers have been plagued with the inability to go to high average powers because of thermally induced birefringence and focusing. Several methods have been employed to correct for the birefringence and the thermal aberrations of such systems, but place stringent constraints on the laser heads and/or the system alignment. They have developed a scalable Nd: YAG master oscillator/power amplifier (MOPA) laser system which employs a novel phase conjugation scheme to correct both for the material and thermal distortions as well as the thermal birefringence in double pass amplifier systems. This method reduces the double pass depolarization from 42% to less than 2% and is easy to align.
