The importance of understanding why a natural product exerts a certain pharmacologic effect is emphasized. This approach answers such questions as: what active compounds have been isolated from this product?; is there a biological (chemotaxonomic) similarity between this and other natural products?; what evidence is there to substantiate or disprove the folk use of this product?; and, is this product safe? The first section is composed of nine chapters describing natural products by chemotaxonomic class and by pharmacologic system. The second section contains referenced monographs designed to provide concise information on the nomenclature, taxonomy, history, chemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of the natural products of greatest clinical importance.

Book A Comprehensive Chemical and Pharmacological Review of Cosmetics

Download or read book A Comprehensive Chemical and Pharmacological Review of Cosmetics written by Abdul Kader Mohiuddin and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first finding of cosmetics comes from Ancient Egypt, some 6,000 years ago. The worldwide market for cosmetics now stands at more than $500 billion and is anticipated to raise $750 billion by 2025, growing at the rate of 6%. Growth in global economies, changes in lifestyle, increased competition for skin and sun care products, due to varying weather conditions, are encouraging the growth of the cosmetics market. Rising interest in natural, herbal, and biodynamic skin care products creates new opportunities for manufacturers to innovate and develop new products in line with consumer preferences. The book "A Comprehensive Chemical and Pharmacological Review of Cosmetics" mostly focuses on the chemical and pharmacological aspects of using these additives along with the main ingredients. This rising market needs constant multifaceted control, i.e. monitoring of harmful chemicals and biological degradation. Adding artificial ingredients to consumer cosmetic products is a common practice for increasing cosmetic efficacy, maintaining cosmetic effectiveness, and producing a longer-lasting, more viable product. The chapters of the book cover an extensive list of topics, including, but not limited to, the basics of skincare products, such as the raw materials of cosmetics and their application; technical implications of the merits and demerits of ingredients used, as well as theoretical knowledge; skin creams, lighteners, tanners, sunscreens, facial powders, acne protection, and anti-aging formulations. Harmful cosmetics pose a risk to consumers owing to the presence of impermissible or prohibited substances under the current cosmetic legislation. Cosmetic hazards and regulations are therefore discussed in detail to give readers a clear idea.

Book The Development of American Pharmacology

Download or read book The Development of American Pharmacology written by John Parascandola and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The word pharmacology has been used since the seventeenth century to refer - like the ancient term materia medica - to the general study of drugs, including their origin, composition, physiological effects, therapeutic uses, preparation, and administration. But the modern science of pharmacology did not emerge as a distinct discipline until the nineteenth century, when scientists primarily concerned with investigating the physiological effects of drugs began calling themselves "pharmacologists."" "The Development of American Pharmacology is the first comprehensive history of the emergence of the science of pharmacology as an independent discipline in the United States. Central to the story is John J. Abel (1857-1938), widely regarded as the "father of American pharmacology." A student of the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins, Abel received his M.D. degree at the University of Strassburg and helped introduce German knowledge of pharmacology to his American colleagues. At the University of Michigan, he was appointed to the first chair of pharmacology in the United States, and as professor of pharmacology at Johns Hopkins for thirty-nine years, he trained many of the leading figures in the discipline." "In addition to offering the first detailed portrait of Abel's education and career, Parascandola treats topics such as the beginnings of experimental pharmacology in the nineteenth century; the spread of American pharmacology from Michigan and Johns Hopkins to other universities; the growth of pharmacology outside the academic setting; and the establishment of a national society of pharmacologists and a specialized journal, the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
