Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine and botany have been inextricably linked since the dawn of humanity as we know it. The use of plants to heal, soothe and cure ailments goes back as far as recorded human history and likely a great deal longer. The roots of both mainstream modern medicine and modern herbalism are planted in the physic garden. Heber Youngken was determined in this book to boil down to the essentials of Pharmaceutical Botany. Those gems of knowledge which would be essential to those students of pharmacy who needed to gain a good grounding of the subject matter fast. Marketed towards first year college students this work will be readily useful to those with even a basic scientific grounding or an enthusiastic amateur botanist or gardener. The first part of the book focuses primarily on the morphology of plants, particularly angiosperms, in both the gross and minute sense. Youngken is commendably thorough in explaining how a plant is composed, the exact appearance and nature of each part of the organism. He explores the purpose and ordinary method of functioning for each element of the plant as well as the deep geological history of plant life and their ecological relationships with surrounding flora and fauna. The taxonomy of plants is explored with a particular emphasis on the medicinal uses and compounds contained within each plant and those which carry characteristics in common across an entire plant genus. In particular he gives practical information about the part of the plant used for an active ingredient in medicine. Pharmaceutical Botany is a valuable piece of information for any budding herbalist, from a treasured part of the German herbal medical tradition. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Medical Botany of North America Botany is the science which treats of the vegetable kingdom. A science so comprehensive, including everything which relates to plants, from the life history of those low organisms on the border line between the animal and the vegetable world to that of the giant oak which endures for centuries, must of necessity be divided for the convenience of students. Accordingly general botany comprises many well-recognized departments one of which, devoted to the history of medicinal plants, is known as medical botany. But medical botany is also a comprehensive science, for the list of plants possessing greater 01 less medicinal activity is long, and the plants are, in many instances, so remote and inaccessible that their study is beset with many difficulties. The obstacles, however, in the way of the student who would acquire a knowledge of the medicinal plants of his own country are neither numerous nor formidable. Especially is this true of the medical botany of North America for though this continent, with its broad extent of territory, varied surface, and extremes of temperature, sup ports an extensive and interesting flora, the number of medicinal species is surprisingly small, and these are so distributed as to be generally accessible. Book Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Botany Classic Reprint written by Herbert M. Richards and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany What is the content and scope of the science of botany? Popular opinion will answer somewhat easily: Botany consists in the gathering of plants, and the dismembering of them, in connection with the use of a complicated terminology. That is the beginning and end of botany as it is understood by the majority; there is nothing more to be said. In consequence, the employment of the botanist seems so trivial, so very remote from important human interests that no second thought is given to it. The conception formed in ignorance is continued in ignorance. Even the zoologist is at an advantage, for the public is finally forced to admit that it does not know what he is about, while it understands the botanist very well. He is quite hopeless, for, while flowers may be pretty things to pick, they should not be pulled to pieces, and if he does not happen to be interested in dissecting flowers he is not a botanist but simply a fraud. Far from being remote, the study of plants comes very close to human interests. One has but to stop to think that plants are the great energy source for man himself and the animals upon which his well-being depends, to recognize that a careful study of their manner of life, the conditions which favor or hinder their growth is of the very first importance. Book Bulletin of the Lloyd Library

Download or read book Bulletin of the Lloyd Library written by J. U. Lloyd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Lloyd Library: Of Botany, Pharmacy and Materia Medica Samuel Thomson. In presenting this Bulletin of the Lloyd Library, the editor finds it necessary to deviate from the methods adopted in the publications heretofore offered in our Reproduction Series. In the preceding issues, the aim has been to present fac similes of each work, even to the copying of gross errors, and the imitation, as far as possible, of both the type and the manuscript form of the publication. In the present Bulletin such a method is impossible, owing both to the extent and cosmopolitan nature of the publication we are presenting, and to the fact that our aim is to portray the man, and picture conditions of that period, rather than to present in full any one or more of his works. In our opinion, a comprehension of this remarkable man can be accomplished only by bringing the reader into touch with conspicuous phases of his life and examples of his methods, as well as by a realization of his ideals, as shown by the efforts and the sacrifices he made, in the face of the most pronounced resistance to his processes. This we aim to do in the pages that follow. In our opinion, this Bulletin will give to the reader a fair picture not only of the man before us, but also of the conditions that, at the time mentioned, dominated the disciples of the healing art in America. To this we may add that one can not now easily enter into the problems of that day concerning medicine and the practice of medicine. The passion, the dogmatism, the vituperation of the period, the suppression of free thought and investigation outside authority, is a something that can not now be expressed or readily appreciated. But a touch of it all can be grasped and partly comprehended by noting the evolution that has taken place in the fields of American pharmacy and medicine since the beginning of the last century; by contrasting present conditions with the period typified in the record of Samuel Thomson. The New Guide to Health, whose title-page is given in fac simile, was first issued by Samuel Thomson in 1822.It passed rapidly through many editions, some of them exceedingly large, but with few changes other than supplements, as shown in the Additions, reproduced by us, pages 50-54. Book Wild Medicinal Plants of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wild Medicinal Plants of the United States Classic Reprint written by Alice Henkel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Medicinal Plants of the United States In connection with the work of drug-plant Investigations many inquiries are received from various parts of the country asking for a list of the drug-producing plants of the regions concerned and for information as to the parts of the plants used in medicine, etc. It being impossible to comply with requests of this nature in any satis factory way, Miss Henkel was asked to compile a list of the drug plants of this country, using as a basis the catalogues of dealers in crude drugs and the standard works on systematic botany. It has seemed from an inspection of these lists and of much current phar maceutical literature that the recent changes in botanical nomenclature have succeeded one another too rapidly to permit the drug dealer and the pharmacist to keep pace with them. This has resulted in consider able confusion in regard to botanical names, and in some cases in the matter of the common names of drug-producing plants. In such a list as that herewith presented the opportunity for helping to clear up this situation has seemed worth improving. The recent appearance of the new Pharmacopoeia, in which the botanical nomenclature has been revised, has seemed to emphasize the desirability of making this attempt, since the names in the case of official plants will be fairly definitely fixed among pharmacists for the next ten years. In the accompanying list the pharmacopoeial names are given and a revision of the nomenclature of the unofficial drugs is also presented. Mr. Frederick V. Coville, Botanist, has kindly revised the botanical names used in this publication. It is hoped that this compilation will tend to unify usage among those who have to do with crude drugs and drug plants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Botany: A Course of Lectures Delivered at Sussex Hall, During 1850 We have long contemplated giving our lectures which have been so popular in many parts of this country, to the public in the form of a volume. In fact we have been for several years, from time to time requested to do so, and scarcely a week has elapsed of late that has not brought us letters urging us to the performance of the task. We now accede to the request, and were it not generally customary to give some kind of a preface we should have been tempted to have dispensed with that part of our duty, and passed it over in silence as the subjects speak for themselves.
