Download or read book Phantasy Land of the Beyond written by Just Dave and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern-day-fairy-tale fantasy novel partially based on facts set in the Singapore of the 80s with a sci-fi prologue and a fairy-tale opening. Self-explanatory, really (read it to find out). Written mainly in American English with a dash of Singlish, and sometimes, broken English (on purpose, of course!). Main character is Dave, a prince from the fantasy kingdom of Phantasy, who was left in the care of a childless couple, the Teos from Singapore, as a baby by his father, King Devonus, in order to save him from the evil clutches of a nefarious warlock called Secondras. Supporting characters include a royal palace guard dog-man called Musscus, the royal head steward Hootus, and of course, the main characters love interest who only appeared near the end of the story for a brief period only. There are a lot of made-up interesting names in this fantasy novel. It is a work of fiction after all. The readers will be able to identify with the characters as the story unfolds with plenty of interesting and unexpected moments. Started out as a lone fantasy book, but became apparent that it was part of a trilogy as I continued working on it. Guaranteed to make the reader laugh, hate, love, and weep as he or she follows and grows with the book to the end. Many ideas in this book are not found in most other books of the same genre. Unique and one-of-a-kind, really. Go on, read it, and find out more. I dare you to!

Book excerpt: Fay and Clive knew they were in trouble when they were abducted into another world where their grandfather was an evil wizard. They found the new surroundings more disturbing than the fact that Grandfather was dead. For one thing, there was no sun but there was eternal light. And then there were the monsters . . . . This new fantasy from a master of horrific suspense deals with a topic that is anything but fantasy--the soaring divorce rates of the last few decades and the dire impact on America's young. A long time professional in science fiction, fantasy, and horror, Linaweaver considers "The Land Beyond Summer" to be his most imaginative work. He has won awards and been on best seller lists but he says that none of that work drew from the place of his deepest dreams. Land is unique in his output and too controversial for conventional publishers of books for Young Adults. The story is about a brother and sister's adventures in a dimension where the seasons are physical countries. They are on a mission to rescue their parents who are imprisoned there. The quest they undertake is a challenge to their very souls. The fate of the seasons hangs in the balance. Readers of C.S. Lewis will recognize the issues at stake while fans of H.P. Lovecraft will feel right at home with Linaweaver's bizarre creatures.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The single most important explanation, and the fullest explanation, of how Donald Trump became president of the United States . . . nothing less than the most important book that I have read this year.”—Lawrence O’Donnell How did we get here? In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen shows that what’s happening in our country today—this post-factual, “fake news” moment we’re all living through—is not something new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character. America was founded by wishful dreamers, magical thinkers, and true believers, by hucksters and their suckers. Fantasy is deeply embedded in our DNA. Over the course of five centuries—from the Salem witch trials to Scientology to the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, from P. T. Barnum to Hollywood and the anything-goes, wild-and-crazy sixties, from conspiracy theories to our fetish for guns and obsession with extraterrestrials—our love of the fantastic has made America exceptional in a way that we've never fully acknowledged. From the start, our ultra-individualism was attached to epic dreams and epic fantasies—every citizen was free to believe absolutely anything, or to pretend to be absolutely anybody. With the gleeful erudition and tell-it-like-it-is ferocity of a Christopher Hitchens, Andersen explores whether the great American experiment in liberty has gone off the rails. Fantasyland could not appear at a more perfect moment. If you want to understand Donald Trump and the culture of twenty-first-century America, if you want to know how the lines between reality and illusion have become dangerously blurred, you must read this book. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE “This is a blockbuster of a book. Take a deep breath and dive in.”—Tom Brokaw “[An] absorbing, must-read polemic . . . a provocative new study of America’s cultural history.”—Newsday “Compelling and totally unnerving.”—The Village Voice “A frighteningly convincing and sometimes uproarious picture of a country in steep, perhaps terminal decline that would have the founding fathers weeping into their beards.”—The Guardian “This is an important book—the indispensable book—for understanding America in the age of Trump.”—Walter Isaacson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci

Book Ursula K Le Guin Conversations on Writing

Download or read book Ursula K Le Guin Conversations on Writing written by Ursula K. Le Guin and published by Tin House Books. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ursula K. Le Guin discusses her fiction, nonfiction, and poetry?both her process and her philosophy?with all the wisdom, profundity, and rigor we expect from one of the great writers of the last century. When the New York Times referred to Ursula K. Le Guin as America’s greatest writer of science fiction, they just might have undersold her legacy. It’s hard to look at her vast body of work?novels and stories across multiple genres, poems, translations, essays, speeches, and criticism?and see anything but one of our greatest writers, period. In a series of interviews with David Naimon (Between the Covers), Le Guin discusses craft, aesthetics, and philosophy in her fiction, poetry, and nonfiction respectively. The discussions provide ample advice and guidance for writers of every level, but also give Le Guin a chance to to sound off on some of her favorite subjects: the genre wars, the patriarchy, the natural world, and what, in her opinion, makes for great writing. With excerpts from her own books and those that she looked to for inspiration, this volume is a treat for Le Guin’s longtime readers, a perfect introduction for those first approaching her writing, and a tribute to her incredible life and work.

  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book A Way Beyond Religion written by Raja Bhat MD and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-09-29 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book has taken many years of spiritual exploration to create. It explores spirituality within various religions, and finds spiritual gems within each religion while discarding what is contrary to universal human spirituality. The book tries to tear out of religion whatever is tearing humanity apart. It extracts ideas and teachings from our various religions that give us the ability to practice the trimmings of simple spirituality free from the trappings of religious dogma. It reviews various approaches to meditation, and finds a simple letting-go meditation practice which opens up our innate spirituality. This method works for everybody, and is free of religious exclusivity. The meditation practice is based on the teachings of the Tao, Zen, and the Hindu Upanishads, and is consistent with Islamic and Christian spirituality. Finally, it teaches and guides us in bringing the spirituality acquired from prayer and meditation into our everyday lives. This insightful and inspiring book is a call to set spirituality free from the dead-weight of religious dogma. It fearlessly exposes the madness of religious fundamentalism and offers instead the loving kindness of genuine spiritual awakening. Bigoted religion is a source of most of the conflicts bedeviling our world today. In this book Raja Bhat offers an exciting alternative: spirituality transcending religion. Timothy Freke, author and co-author of numerous books on religion and spirituality, such as Encyclopedia of Spirituality; The Jesus Mysteries; Jesus And The Lost Goddess; Spiritual Traditions: Essential Teachings To Transform Your Life; The Complete Guide To World Mysticism and many others.

Book Beyond Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism

Download or read book Beyond Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism written by Benjamin H. Ogden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a series of radical and innovative chapters, Beyond Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism: Between Literature and Mind challenges the tradition of applied psychoanalysis that has long dominated psychoanalytic literary criticism. Benjamin H. Ogden, a literary scholar, proposes that a new form of analytic literary criticism take its place, one that begins from a place of respect for the mystery of literature and the complexity of its inner workings. In this book, through readings of authors such as J.M. Coetzee, Flannery O’Connor, and Vladimir Nabokov, the mysteries upon which literary works rely for their enduring power are enumerated and studied. Such mysteries are thereafter interwoven into a series of pioneering studies of how the conceptions of thinking, dreaming, and losing become meaningful within the unique aesthetic conditions of individual novels and poems. Each chapter is a provisional solution to the difficult "bridging problems" that arise when literary figures work in the psychoanalytic space, and when psychoanalysts attempt to make use of literature for analytic purposes. At every turn, Beyond Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism: Between Literature and Mind acts as a living example of the territory it explores: the space between two disciplines, wherein the writer brings into being a form of psychoanalytic literary criticism of his own making. Forgoing traditional applied psychoanalysis and technical jargon, this highly accessible, interdisciplinary work will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, as well as literary critics and scholars.
