Book excerpt: "AAPG Memoir 79, The Circum-Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, is the first volume in more than a decade to document such a wide range of research on the geology of this vast area. Of the total 44 papers, roughly two-thirds pertain to the Gulf of Mexico, with an emphasis on the Mexican portion of the basin, and to the petroliferous areas of the southern Caribbean, including Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, and Trinidad and Tobago. The remaining papers relate to the Antilles and Central America, as well as a series of papers that address region-wide topics such as plate tectonic evolution. A significant number of papers were contributed by authors from national oil companies and universities from within the region." --AAPG.

Book Transgressive regressive deposits of Difunta Group Upper Cretaceous Paleocene Parras Basin northeastern Mexico

This book was released on 1977 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The major purpose of this study was to examine in detail the anomalous transgressive "boundary" sandstones which generally are present at formation boundaries throughout the Parras and La Popa basins. These extensive sheet-like sandstone bodies are massive, resistant units up to 20 m thick and up to 25 km wide that form the cap of mountains and hogbacks. These are anomalous units because transgressive deposits thicker than 5-10 m are rare in ancient deposits although they are well-documented for some Holocene deposits. For example there are no known thick transgressive deposits in the well-studied cyclic transgressive-regressive sequences in the Cretaceous rocks of the Rocky Mountains. McBride and others (1975) previously interpreted these boundary sandstone bodies to have been laid down as thick transgressive or regressive blanket deposits as the shoreline moved back and forth across the basins in response to variable basin subsidence and sediment input. In order to clarify this interpretation, we selected deposits formed during the latest part of the first deltaic progradation represented by the Cerro Huerta Formation, and at the beginning of the first marine transgression represented by the Cañon del Tule Formation for detailed study"--Leaves 3-4.

Book Provenance Detrital Zircon U PB Geochronology and Tectonic Significance of Middle Cretaceous Sandstones from the Alberta Foreland Basin

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian-Alaskan Cordillera exhibits a severely overprinted amalgam of subduction zone, arc, back-arc, ocean basin, and continental margin assemblages that collectively represent more than 750 million years of tectonic activity. Sedimentary basins flanking the orogeny were filled with detritus from the adjacent uplifted fold-and-thrust belt and thus provide a detailed record of the source area that helps constrain the timing of paleogeographic reconstructions and tectonic evolution models. This study presents new U-Pb detrital zircon ages from Middle Cretaceous sandstones of the Alberta Foreland Basin that indicate a dramatic shift in provenance across the Albian-Cenomanian boundary and elucidate the extent of terrane emergence in the Cordillera between 101 and 96 Ma. The Albian Viking Formation yielded 221 U-Pb detrital zircon analyses with 206 grains (93%) providing Precambrian ages that are consistent with age spectra for Paleozoic and early Mesozoic miogeoclinal strata, indicating the foreland basin was being flooded by recycled passive margin detritus during the late Early Cretaceous. The Cenomanian Dunvegan Formation yielded 338 U-Pb detrital zircon analyses showing statistically significant Paleozoic age clusters at 358, 338, and 328 Ma that correspond with the Late Devonian to Early Mississippian Finlay and Late Mississipian Little Salmon magmatic cycles observed regionally throughout the large pericratonic Yukon-Tanana terrane. This correlation suggests the Yukon-Tanana terrane was entrained in the fold-and-thrust belt and exposed near the Dunvegan paleo-catchment area during the early Late Cretaceous, providing a minimum time constraint for the collision of the northern pericratonic terranes with western Laurentia.

Book Provenance of Mid tertiary Sandstone and Conglomerates from the California Continental Borderland

Download or read book Provenance of Mid tertiary Sandstone and Conglomerates from the California Continental Borderland written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconstruction of the Southern California Continental Borderland is constrained by interpretation of widespread Tertiary fluvial-deltaic systems, which contain a primary record of tectonics and sedimentation. Well known extraregional Poway rhyolite porphyry clasts of the Eocene Ballena Channel of San Diego have been recognized in the Channel Islands far to the northeast and constitute a key piercing point in the palinspastic reconstruction of the borderland. The Tertiary section on Santa Cruz Island records distinct changes in provenance starting with Eocene Poway-clast bearing conglomerates overlain by late Oligocene-early Miocene Vaqueros Formation containing a large fraction of locally derived mafic plutonic detritus, which in turn is overlain by blueschist-bearing Miocene strata of the San Onofre Breccia. This paper presents new whole rock major- and trace element geochemistry (n = 62) and laser ablation ICPMS zircon U-Pb ages (n = 21) from Eocene-Miocene conglomerate clasts as well as basement rocks on Santa Cruz Island. The focus is on rhyolite clasts in late Paleocene to middle Miocene extraregional conglomerates in fluviodeltaic and marine borderland sequences, but mafic plutonic clasts from the Vaqueros Formation on Santa Cruz Island as well as local Willows Plutonic Complex basement were also analyzed as a geologic test of local provenance. Nine rhyolite clasts collected from the Eocene-Miocene section on Santa Cruz Island as well as Santiago-Sespe strata in the northern Santa Ana Mountains all have similar high-K calc-alkaline geochemical characteristics and yield zircon ages ranging from 176.9 ±2.7 to 162.2 ±2.7 Ma which overlap the zircon U/Pb age range of 175-165.5 Ma from eleven San Diego Eocene Poway clasts determined by previous workers. This result firmly establishes a common provenance for the rhyolite clasts in the middle Jurassic magmatic arc of northern Sonora, Mexico and south-central Arizona as proposed by others. Two Cretaceous aged clasts (98.9 ±2.7 Ma and 75.1 ±1.7 Ma) are inferred to have been derived from the Peninsular Ranges and Mojave Desert regions, respectively. Angular mafic plutonic detritus is a major component of the Vaqueros Formation on Santa Cruz Island. These deposits accumulated as a fossil-rich shallow-water debris apron and previous seawater strontium isotope dating of the deposit indicates an age of 19 Ma for the youngest part of the sequence. Whole rock geochemistry and zircon U-Pb ages from Vaqueros plutonic clasts closely match the chemistry and zircon U-Pb ages for Willows Plutonic Complex basement and confirm a local derivation for this debris. The Vaqueros Formation, however, still contains a component of extraregional detritus indicated by the present well-rounded quartzite clasts and a rhyolite clast dated at 166.2 ±2.7. Basement exhumation of the Willows Plutonic Complex is here related to the onset of the transpressional regime leading to vertical axis tectonic rotations of the Transverse Ranges from 18-12 Ma.

Book Provenance of the South Texas Paleocene Eocene Wilcox Group Western Gulf of Mexico Basin

Download or read book Provenance of the South Texas Paleocene Eocene Wilcox Group Western Gulf of Mexico Basin written by Glen Nelson Mackey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandstone modal compositions and detrital zircon U-Pb analysis of the Paleocene-Eocene Wilcox Group of the southern Gulf Coast of Texas indicate long-distance sediment transport primarily from volcanic and basement sources to the west, northwest and southwest. The Wilcox Group of south Texas represents the earliest series of major post-Cretaceous pulses of sand deposition along the western margin of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Laramide basement uplifts have long been held to be the provenance of the Wilcox Group, implying that initiation of basement uplifts was the driving factor for this transition from carbonate sedimentation to clastic deposition. To determine the provenance of the Wilcox Group and test this conventional hypothesis, 40 thin sections were point-counted using the Gazzi-Dickinson method to determine sandstone composition and 10 detrital zircon samples were analyzed by LA-ICP-MS to determine U-Pb age spectra for each of the sampled areas. Modal data for sand grain populations suggest mixed sources including basement rocks, magmatic arc rocks and subordinate sedimentary rocks for the Wilcox Group. Zircon age spectra for these sandstones reveal a complex grain assemblage derived from older sediments and crystalline rocks ranging in age from Archean to Cenozoic. Sediment was primarily derived from Laramide uplifted crystalline blocks of the central and southern Rocky Mountains, the Cordilleran arc of western North America, and arc related extrusive and intrusive igneous rock of northern Mexico. Comparisons of Upper and Lower Wilcox zircon age spectra show that more arc related material was deposited in the Lower Wilcox, whereas more basement material was deposited in the Upper Wilcox.
