Book Implicitness

Download or read book Implicitness written by Piotr Cap and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the term implicitness is ubiquitous in the pragmatic scholarship, it has rarely constituted the focus of attention per se. This book aims to help crystallize the concept of implicitness by defining its linguistic boundaries, as well as specifying and exploring its different communicative manifestations. The contributions by leading specialists scrutinize the main conceptualizations, forms and occurrences of implicitness (such as implicature, impliciture, explicature, entailment, presupposition, etc.) at different levels of linguistic organization. The volume focuses on phrasal, sentential, and discursive phenomena, showcasing the richness and variety of implicit forms of communication, systematizing (where possible) the existing analytic perspectives, and identifying the most productive procedures for further exploration. Taken together, the chapters exhibit theoretical differences that hinder a consensus on the nature of implicitness, but they simultaneously reveal methodological points of contact and raise common questions, thereby signposting a future analytic agenda. The book will appeal to both theoretically and empirically minded scholars working within and across the disciplines of Pragmatics, Semantics, Language Philosophy, Discourse Analysis, and Communication Studies.

Book Leadership Discourse and Ethnicity

Download or read book Leadership Discourse and Ethnicity written by Janet Holmes and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in the field of workplace discourse to examine the relationships among leadership, ethnicity, and language use. Taking a social constructionist approach to the ways in which leadership is enacted through discourse, Leadership, Discourse, and Ethnicity problematizes the concept of ethnicity and demonstrates the importance of context-particularly the community of practice-in determining what counts as relevant in the analysis of ethnicity. The authors analyse everyday workplace interactions supplemented by interview data to examine the ways in which workplace leaders use language to achieve their transactional and relational goals in contrasting "ethnicized" contexts, two of which are Maori and two European/Pakeha. Their analysis pays special attention to the roles of ethnic values, beliefs and orientations in talk.

Book Studies of Video Practices

Download or read book Studies of Video Practices written by Mathias Broth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two decades have seen a rapid increase in the production and consumption of video by both professionals and amateurs. The near ubiquity of devices with video cameras and the rise of sites like YouTube have lead to the growth and transformation of the practices of producing, circulating, and viewing video, whether it be in households, workplaces, or research laboratories. This volume builds a foundation for studies of activities based in and around video production and consumption. It contributes to the interdisciplinary field of visual methodology, investigating how video functions as a resource for a variety of actors and professions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining research approaches from biology, philosophy and linguistics, the field of Biosemiotics proposes that animals, plants and single cells all engage in semiosis – the conversion of objective signals into conventional signs. This has important implications and applications for issues ranging from natural selection to animal behavior and human psychology, leaving biosemiotics at the cutting edge of the research on the fundamentals of life. Drawing on an international expertise, the book details the history and study of biosemiotics, and provides a state-of-the-art summary of the current work in this new field. And, with relevance to a wide range of disciplines – from linguistics and semiotics to evolutionary phenomena and the philosophy of biology – the book provides an important text for both students and established researchers, while marking a vital step in the evolution of a new biological paradigm.

Book The Star of Algiers

Download or read book The Star of Algiers written by Aziz Chouaki and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moussa Massy dreams of being a star. A Kabyle singer in 1990s Algiers, Massy electrifies audiences with his fusion of Arab and African melodies with American pop music. At 36, he desperately wants to marry his long-term fianc e and escape from the three-room apartment he shares with thirteen other members of his family. When he is signed to perform at one of the hottest nightclubs in town, his dreams appear to be coming true. But his taste of fame and freedom is short-lived: when the fundamentalist Islamic group FIS is elected to power, the city is submerged in corruption and violence. As he battles to salvage his dreams in a society steeped in fanaticism, Massy s passion for music turns to unforgiving rage. In energetic, staccato prose, The Star of Algiers vividly portrays the harsh realities of a country in constant turmoil and brilliantly shows the capacity for despair and hatred of those who have nothing left to lose.
