En citant largement les grands corpus funéraires que sont les Textes des Pyramides, les Textes des Sarcophages et le Livre des Morts, et en faisant appel aux scènes gravées sur les parois des temples gréco-romains - essentiellement Edfou, Dendara, Philae et Kôm Ombo - aussi bien qu'aux inscriptions qui les accompagnent, Jean-Pierre Corteggiani parvient à cerner la nature et la personnalité de chaque dieu en proposant parfois de nouvelles interprétations. Une riche et précieuse iconographie accompagne nombre d'entrées, donnant ainsi à voir les formes, parfois déconcertantes, que peuvent prendre ces êtres divins."
