Book Handbook of Orthography and Literacy

Download or read book Handbook of Orthography and Literacy written by R. Malatesha Joshi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until about two decades ago, the study of writing systems and their relationship to literacy acquisition was sparse and generally modeled after studies of English language learners. This situation is now changing. As the worldwide demand for literacy continues to grow, researchers from different countries with different language backgrounds have begun examining the connection between their writing systems and literacy acquisition. This text, which derives from a NATO sponsored conference on orthography and literacy, brings together the research of 70 scholars from across the world--the largest assemblage of such experts to date. Their findings are grouped into three parts, as follows: Part I, Literacy Acquisition in Different Writing Systems, describes the relationship between orthography and literacy in twenty-five orthographic systems. This section serves as a handy reference source for understanding the orthographies of languages as diverse as Arabic, Chinese, English, Icelandic, Kannada, and Kishwahili. Part II, Literacy Acquisition From a Cross-Linguistic Perspective, makes direct comparisons of literacy acquisition in English and other orthographic systems. The overall conclusion that emerges from these eight chapters is that the depth of an orthographic system does influence literacy acquisition primarily by slowing down the acquisition of reading skills. Even so, studies show that dyslexic readers can be found across all orthographic systems whether shallow or deep, which shows that dyslexia also has internal cognitive and biological components. Part III, Literacy Acquisition: Instructional Perspectives, explores literacy acquisition from developmental and instructional perspectives and ends with a look into the future of literacy research. This Handbook is appropriate for scholars, researchers, and graduate students in such diverse fields as cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, literacy education, English as a second language, and communication disorders.

Book Foundations of Reading Acquisition and Dyslexia

Download or read book Foundations of Reading Acquisition and Dyslexia written by Benita A. Blachman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume are based on presentations made at a recent conference on cognitive and linguistic foundations of reading acquisition. The researchers who participated have all made contributions to the theoretical and empirical understanding of how children learn to read. They were asked to address not only what they have learned from their research, but also to discuss unsolved problems. This dialogue prompted numerous questions of both a theoretical and applied nature, generated heated debate, and fueled optimism about the important gains that have been made in the scientific understanding of the reading process, especially of the critical role played by phonological abilities.

Book Handbook of Children s Literacy

Download or read book Handbook of Children s Literacy written by Terezinha Nunes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PETER BRYANT & TEREZINHA NUNES The time that it takes children to learn to read varies greatly between different orthographies, as the chapter by Sprenger-Charolles clearly shows, and so do the difficulties that they encounter in learning about their own orthography. Nevertheless most people, who have the chance to learn to read, do in the end read well enough, even though a large number experience some significant difficulties on the way. Most of them eventually become reasonably efficient spellers too, even though they go on make spelling mistakes (at any rate if they are English speakers) for the rest of their lives. So, the majority of humans plainly does have intellectual resources that are needed for reading and writing, but it does not always find these resources easy to marshal. What are these resources? Do any of them have to be acquired? Do different orthographies make quite different demands on the intellect? Do people differ significantly from each other in the strength and accessibility of these resources? If they do, are these differences an important factor in determining children's success in learning to read and write? These are the main questions that the different chapters in this section on Basic Processes set out to answer.

Book Dialogue on Writing

Download or read book Dialogue on Writing written by Geraldine DeLuca and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for courses on theories and methods of teaching college writing, this text is distinguished by its emphasis on giving teachers a foundation of knowledge for teaching writing to a diverse student body. As such, it is equally relevant for teacher training in basic writing, ESL, and first year composition, the premise being that in most colleges and universities today teachers of each of these types of courses encounter similar student populations and teaching challenges. Many instructors compile packets of articles for this course because they cannot find an appropriate collection in one volume. This text fills that gap. It includes in one volume: *the latest thinking about teaching and tutoring basic writing, ESL, and first year composition students; *seminal articles, carefully selected to be accessible to those new to the field, by classic authors in the field of composition and ESL, as well as a number of new voices; *attention to both theory and practice, but with an emphasis on practice; and *articles about non-traditional students, multiculturalism, and writing across the disciplines. The text includes suggestions for pedagogy and invitations for exploration to engage readers in reflection and in applications to their own teaching practice.

Book excerpt: "Andy Miller’s Teachers, Parents and Classroom Behaviour is the most useful, insightful and coherent account of understanding and managing behaviour in schools that I have read. It is also superbly written, making it a pleasure to read... if you buy only one book this year, then it should be this one." Educational Psychology in Practice “This elegantly crafted book contains thought-provoking implications for all branches of applied psychology, as well as educationists and policy makers… With an increasing focus in education on evidence-based practice, this book will be a valuable resource for practicing and trainee teachers and educational psychologists… [It] offers an extremely timely contribution to current developments in education.”The Psychologist "I found the book fascinating and it has led me to think differently in a variety of situations... It has also impacted my views on the school ethos and teacher relationships. I will be recommending this book to members of the senior management team and staff who work with pupils with behavioural problems." Young Minds Magazine 68/2004 The behaviour of students in schools is a matter of great concern. Legislation, media coverage and 'test cases' are flooding into the public consciousness at an increasing pace. The relative responsibility of teachers and parents is a particularly prominent and contentious issue. This book examines the reasons why strong statements of mutual recrimination and blame often occur in this area, before looking at policies and practices which are co-operative, preventive and proactive in nature. But this is not solely another book of tips and techniques. In addition to describing strategies with a proven evidence base, it also demonstrates, within a coherent framework, how and why these approaches achieve their aims. This book provides an in-depth understanding of key psychological factors for those in schools struggling in this vexed and pressing area and for that widening group of professionals charged with working in partnership to bring about demonstrable change.
