Book excerpt: Aspects of Lincoln, is the first in the widely acclaimed Aspects series to feature the City of Lincoln. However the Aspects series now extends from the east and west Midlands, up to Lancaster in the north-west and the north Yorkshire coast in the east.Aspects of Lincoln, is a multi author book containing 12 pinpoint historical essays covering such diverse subjects as: Cinemas and Cinema Going in 20th Century Lincoln, Getting Drunk in 17th Century Lincoln, the story of Emily Gilbert, motoring pioneer and first woman sheriff of Lincoln. No story of Lincoln would be complete without Royal Air Force Bomber Command during World War 2, and here, we examine the social impact of the airfields and their staff on both City and County. In a more peaceful vein, we study the work of artist Peter de Wint and the importance of his works, now held in the Usher Gallery. Elsewhere we encounter the development of technical education in the City and remember the plight of those imprisoned in Lincoln's jails during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These and much much more are to be found between the covers of Aspects of Lincoln. A treasury of history, both for the armchair historian and the student alike.

Book Museum Storage and Meaning

  • ISBN : 1351659421
  • Pages : 291 pages

Download or read book Museum Storage and Meaning written by Mirjam Brusius and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond their often beautiful exhibition halls, many museums contain vast, hidden spaces in which objects may be stored, conserved, or processed. Museums can also include unseen archives, study rooms, and libraries which are inaccessible to the public. This collection of essays focuses on this domain, an area that has hitherto received little attention. Divided into four sections, the book critically examines the physical space of museum storage areas, the fluctuating historical fortunes of exhibits, the growing phenomenon of publicly visible storage, and the politics of objects deemed worthy of collection but unsuitable for display. In doing so, it explores issues including the relationship between storage and canonization, the politics of collecting, the use of museum storage as a form of censorship, the architectural character of storage space, and the economic and epistemic value of museum objects. Essay contributions come from a broad combination of museum directors, curators, archaeologists, historians, and other academics.

Book The Pictorial Turn

  • Pages : 347 pages

Download or read book The Pictorial Turn written by Neal Curtis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992 W. J. T. Mitchell argued for a "pictorial turn" in the humanities, registering a renewed interest in and prevalence of pictures and images in what had been understood as an age of simulation, or an increasingly extensive and diverse visual culture. However, in what is often characterized as a society of the "spectacle" we still do not know exactly what pictures or images are, what their relation to language is, how they operate on observers and the world, how their history is to be understood, and what is to be done with or about them. In this seminal collection of essays, the first to be devoted to the "pictorial turn", theorists from across the humanities and social sciences, representing the disciplines of art history, philosophy, geography, media studies, visual studies and anthropology, are brought together with a paleontologist and practising artists to consider amongst other things the relation between pictures and images, the power of landscape, the nature of political images, the status of images in the natural sciences, the "life" of images, and the pictorial uncanny. With these topics in mind, picture theory and iconology exceed in scope the objects of visual culture conventionally understood. This book was published as a special issue of Culture, Theory and Critique.
