Download or read book The Food System written by Geoff Tansey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food is a massive industry and the many key players involved have very different interests. In wealthy nations those interests can range from corporate survival and maintaining profitability in a market with limited demand, to promoting a healthy diet and ensuring food safety. For the poor, the emphasis is all too often on simply getting enough to eat. As information technology and biotechnology are set to revolutionize the food system, it is essential to understand the broad context in which the different actors operate, so that all the world's people can enjoy a safe, secure, sufficient and sustainable food supply. This text provides an overview of today's dominant food system - one developed in and controlled by northern industrialized countries, and one that is becoming increasingly globalized.

Download or read book Managing Water Under Uncertainty and Risk written by Unesco and published by Unesco. This book was released on 2012 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This flagship report is a comprehensive review that gives an overall picture of the world's freshwater resources. It analyses pressures from decisions that drive demand for water and affect its availability. It offers tools and response options to help leaders in government, the private sector and civil society address current and future challenges. It suggests ways in which institutions can be reformed and their behaviour modified, and explores possible sources of financing for the urgently needed investment in water. The WWDR4 is a milestone within the WWDR series, reporting directly on regions and highlighting hotspots, and it has been mainstreamed for gender equality. It introduces a thematic approach - 'Managing Water under Uncertainty and Risk' - in the context of a world which is changing faster than ever in often unforeseeable ways, with increasing uncertainties and risks. It highlights that historical experience will no longer be sufficient to approximate the relationship between the quantities of available water and shifting future demands. Like the earlier editions, the WWDR4 also contains country-level case studies describing the progress made in meeting water-related objectives. The WWDR4 also seeks to show that water has a central role in all aspects of economic development and social welfare, and that concerted action via a collective approach of the water-using sectors is needed to ensure water's many benefits are maximized and shared equitably and that water-related development goals are achieved.

Download or read book World Water Scenarios written by Frank R. Rijsberman and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most acute problems facing the world is shortage of fresh water. More than 1 billion people already do not have access to safe drinking water, and population and economic growth will impose water stress on more and more countries. The detailed and carefully modeled studies were prepared by the leading international experts in the field. They examine all the factors involved - domestic consumption, industry, agriculture. They show the effects if current trends are not improved and demonstrate how much difference more efficient and productive water use can make. The product of the most comprehensive analysis of the world's water ever undertaken, by the World Water Council, the volume provides a benchmark for all future research and policy on the issue.

Download or read book Functional Form and Heterogeneity in Models for Count Data written by William Greene and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2007 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents several extensions of the most familiar models for count data, the Poisson and negative binomial models. We develop an encompassing model for two well-known variants of the negative binomial model (the NB1 and NB2 forms). We then analyze some alternative approaches to the standard log gamma model for introducing heterogeneity into the loglinear conditional means for these models. The lognormal model provides a versatile alternative specification that is more flexible (and more natural) than the log gamma form, and provides a platform for several "two part" extensions, including zero inflation, hurdle, and sample selection models. (We briefly present some alternative approaches to modeling heterogeneity.) We also resolve some features in Hausman, Hall and Griliches (1984, Economic models for count data with an application to the patents-R & D relationship, Econometrica 52, 909-938) widely used panel data treatments for the Poisson and negative binomial models that appear to conflict with more familiar models of fixed and random effects. Finally, we consider a bivariate Poisson model that is also based on the lognormal heterogeneity model. Two recent applications have used this model. We suggest that the correlation estimated in their model frameworks is an ambiguous measure of the correlation of the variables of interest, and may substantially overstate it. We conclude with a detailed application of the proposed methods using the data employed in one of the two aforementioned bivariate Poisson studies
Download or read book Unidentified written by Robert Salas and published by Career Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969 the U.S. Air Force issued a statement that read' "No UFO reported, investigated and evaluated by the Air Force was ever an indication of threat to our national security." This statement is patently false. It has been proven untrue by the testimony of many military officers and airmen and documentation of incidents involving UFOs and nuclear weapons, testimonies of which the U.S. Air Force was fully aware. Unidentified details many of these testimonies, some for the first time. As partial justification for its position, the Air Force cites a University of Colorado study that was contracted and paid for by federal funds. Unidentified reveals how this study was actually just another part of the plan to cover up the reality of the UFO phenomenon. For the first time, Unidentified publishes evidence that the investigators for the Colorado study knew about the UFO-related missile shutdown incidents but did not investigate them or include them in their final report.

Download or read book Efficiency Analysis written by Subal Kumbhakar and published by Now Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-19 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficiency Analysis details the important econometric area of efficiency estimation, both past approaches as well as new methodology. There are two main camps in efficiency analysis: that which estimates maximal output and attributes all departures from this as inefficiency, known as Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), and that which allows for both unobserved variation in output due to shocks and measurement error as well as inefficiency, known as Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). This volume focuses exclusively on SFA. The econometric study of efficiency analysis typically begins by constructing a convoluted error term that is composed on noise, shocks, measurement error, and a one-sided shock called inefficiency. Early in the development of these methods, attention focused on the proposal of distributional assumptions which yielded a likelihood function whereby the parameters of the distributional components of the convoluted error could be recovered. The field evolved to the study of individual specific efficiency scores and the extension of these methods to panel data. Recently, attention has focused on relaxing the stringent distributional assumptions that are commonly imposed, relaxing the functional form assumptions commonly placed on the underlying technology, or some combination of both. All told exciting and seminal breakthroughs have occurred in this literature, and reviews of these methods are needed to effectively detail the state of the art. The generality of SFA is such that the study of efficiency has gone beyond simple application of frontier methods to study firms and appears across a diverse set of applied milieus. This review should appeal to those outside of the efficiency literature seeking to learn about new methods which might assist them in uncovering phenomena in their applied area of interest.
