Book Principles and Practice of Child and Adolescent Forensic Mental Health

Download or read book Principles and Practice of Child and Adolescent Forensic Mental Health written by Elissa P. Benedek and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When care of younger patients raises thorny legal questions, you need answers you can trust: that's why this book belongs on every clinician's reference shelf. Principles and Practice of Child and Adolescent Forensic Mental Health is a timely and authoritative source that covers issues ranging from child custody to litigation concerns as it walks clinicians through the often-confusing field of depositions and courtroom testimony. The book expands on the 2002 volume Principles and Practice of Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry winner of the 2003 Manfred S. Guttmacher Award, to meet pressing twenty-first-century concerns, from telepsychiatry to the Internet, while continuing to cover basic issues, such as forensic evaluation, psychological screening, and the interviewing of children for suspected sexual abuse, that are important to both new and experienced practitioners. Many of its chapters have been entirely rewritten by new authors to provide fresh insight into such topics as child custody; juvenile law; abuse, neglect, and permanent wardship cases; transcultural, transracial, and gay/lesbian parenting and adoption; and the reliability and suggestibility of children's statements. It also includes significant material not found in the previous volume: Two chapters on special education offer an introduction to screening instruments and help practitioners determine a child's potential need for special education programs and services. A chapter on cultural competence helps readers improve the accuracy and responsiveness of forensic evaluations and minimize the chance of an unjust outcome resulting from misguided expert opinion. The section on youth violence features three new chapters -- Taxonomy and Neurobiology of Aggression, Prevention of School Violence, and Juvenile Stalkers -- plus a newly written chapter on assessment of violence risk, offering guidance on how to confront problems such as bullying and initiate effective family interventions. A chapter on psychiatric malpractice and professional liability addresses these legal concerns with an eye toward cases involving minors. A chapter on psychological autopsy covers evaluation of the circumstances surrounding pediatric suicides, describing various types of equivocal deaths and discussing legal issues such as admissibility of the autopsy in court. A newly written chapter on the Internet expands the previous book's focus on child pornography to help practitioners deal with issues ranging from online threats to emotional and legal consequences of interactions in cyberspace. This is a valuable reference not only for practitioners in psychiatry and the mental health field but also for attorneys and judges. It opens up a field that may be too often avoided and helps professionals make their way through legal thickets with confidence.

Book Preparing Adolescents for Life After Foster Care

Download or read book Preparing Adolescents for Life After Foster Care written by Anthony N. Maluccio and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, attention has been given in the foster family care literature to adolescents' readiness for living on their own following aging out of their foster care placement. This book offers ideas on ways to help adolescents master the tasks required to successfully prepare for independent living following discharge from foster care. It is practice-oriented and draws upon the experience of researchers, trainers, consultants, and families. The chapters in Part 1 examine the various dimensions of the problem including the concept of interdependence as the goal of services for this population. It also discusses recruiting foster parents, examining adolescent development, and the need for these young people to mourn their losses before they can move on. Part 2 considers meeting the challenges of preparing these adolescents for life after foster care from the perspective of policy and program. Emphasis is placed on the importance of involving biological parents as resources for adolescents and the resources that black foster parents offer to teenagers in their care. Part 3 focuses on practice methods and strategies in work with adolescents and their foster parents. Also discussed are the needs of minority teenagers; problems of maltreatment; discipline; and assessment tools that can measure the independent-living skills of adolescents. (Contains over 300 references.) (JDM)

Book Child Welfare Placement Features and Psychosocial Adjustment Among Newly Emancipated Foster Youth

Download or read book Child Welfare Placement Features and Psychosocial Adjustment Among Newly Emancipated Foster Youth written by Karishma Patel and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the individual and interactive influences of children's age of entry into the foster care system and the extent of their placement disruptions on later psychosocial adjustment among 172 newly emancipated youth (66% female, 84.6% ethnic-racial minority). Youth reported on their experiences in the child welfare system and their current externalizing behaviors (i.e., substance use and criminal behaviors) and internalizing problems (i.e., anxiety and depression). Regression analyses revealed significant interactive relations between age of system entry and placement disruption, which were further moderated by youth gender. Males who entered foster care at a later age and experienced a high number of placements evidenced significantly higher levels of substance use problems in young adulthood, but these relations were not significant for females. Criminal behaviors were elevated among foster youth of both genders when they entered foster care at a later age and also experienced a higher amount of placement disruption. There was a main effect of age at entry on anxiety problems with youth who entered foster care later in development reporting higher levels of anxiety; however, neither of age of placement, placement disruption, nor their interaction predicted later depression symptoms. This study was among the first to document the individual and interactive contributions of youth's child welfare experiences on later adjustment. The findings highlight the role of placement disruption as an important (and negative) influence on foster youths' adaptation, especially for males.
