Download or read book The Miracle of the Illumination of All Consciences written by Thomas W. Petrisko and published by St. Andrews Productions. This book was released on 2000-05 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From as far back as the 16th century, when St. Edmund Campion of England spoke of ?a great day that would reveal all men's consciences, ? a coming day of enlightenment has been foretold. Known as the ?Warning? or the ?Mini-Judgment?, it is purported to be a day in which God will supernaturally illuminate the conscience of every man, woman, and child on earth. Each person, then, would momentarily see the state of their soul through God's eyes and realize the truth of His existence, afterwhich, it is said the world will never be the same. This predicted event is now said to be imminent, as talk concerning the certainty of this miracle has intensified. This comprehensive and authoritative guide uses Scripture and testimony from the Saints and Visionaries to help explain the coming great miracle of God's Mercy.

Book This Is My Doctrine The Development of Mormon Theology

Download or read book This Is My Doctrine The Development of Mormon Theology written by Charles R. Harrell and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal doctrines defining Mormonism today often bear little resemblance to those it started out with in the early 1830s. This book shows that these doctrines did not originate in a vacuum but were rather prompted and informed by the religious culture from which Mormonism arose. Early Mormons, like their early Christian and even earlier Israelite predecessors, brought with them their own varied culturally conditioned theological presuppositions (a process of convergence) and only later acquired a more distinctive theological outlook (a process of differentiation). In this first-of-its-kind comprehensive treatment of the development of Mormon theology, Charles Harrell traces the history of Latter-day Saint doctrines from the times of the Old Testament to the present. He describes how Mormonism has carried on the tradition of the biblical authors, early Christians, and later Protestants in reinterpreting scripture to accommodate new theological ideas while attempting to uphold the integrity and authority of the scriptures. In the process, he probes three questions: How did Mormon doctrines develop? What are the scriptural underpinnings of these doctrines? And what do critical scholars make of these same scriptures? In this enlightening study, Harrell systematically peels back the doctrinal accretions of time to provide a fresh new look at Mormon theology. “This Is My Doctrine” will provide those already versed in Mormonism’s theological tradition with a new and richer perspective of Mormon theology. Those unacquainted with Mormonism will gain an appreciation for how Mormon theology fits into the larger Jewish and Christian theological traditions.

Book Our Lady of the Rock

  • Author : Lisa M. Bitel
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2015-08-25

Download or read book Our Lady of the Rock written by Lisa M. Bitel and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than twenty years, Maria Paula Acuña has claimed to see the Virgin Mary, once a month, at a place called Our Lady of the Rock in the Mojave Desert of California. Hundreds of men, women, and children follow her into the desert to watch her see what they cannot. While she sees and speaks with the Virgin, onlookers search the skies for signs from heaven, snapping photographs of the sun and sky. Not all of them are convinced that Maria Paula can see the Virgin, yet at each vision event they watch for subtle clues to Mary’s presence, such as the unexpected scent of roses or a cloud in the shape of an angel. The visionary depends on her audience to witness and authenticate her visions, while observers rely on Maria Paula and the Virgin to create a sacred space and moment where they, too, can experience firsthand one of the oldest and most fundamental promises of Christianity: direct contact with the divine. Together, visionary and witnesses negotiate and enact their monthly liturgy of revelations. Our Lady of the Rock, which features text by Lisa M. Bitel and more than sixty photographs by Matt Gainer, shows readers what happens in the Mojave Desert each month and tells us how two thousand years of Christian revelatory tradition prepared Maria Paula and her followers to meet in the desert. Based on six years of observation and interviews, chapters analyze the rituals, iconographies, and physical environment of Our Lady of the Rock. Bitel and Gainer also provide vivid portraits of the pilgrims—who they are, where they come from, and how they practice the traditional Christian discernment of spirits and visions. Our Lady of the Rock follows three pilgrims as they return home with relics and proofs of visions where, out of Maria Paula’s sight, they too have learned to see the Virgin. The book also documents the public response from the Catholic Church and popular news media to Maria Paula and other contemporary visionaries. Throughout, Our Lady of the Rock locates Maria Paula and her followers in the context of recent demographic and cultural shifts in the American Southwest, the astonishing increase in reported apparitions and miracles from around the world, the latest developments in communications and visual technologies, and the never-ending debate among academics, faith leaders, scientists, and citizen observers about sight, perception, reason, and belief.

Download or read book Marian Apparitions written by James Patrick Hynes and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All apparitions of the Virgin Mary are classified by the Roman Catholic Church as private revelations. Joseph, Cardinal Ratzinger, when Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith wrote in 'The message of Fatima, 2000': "The teaching of the Church distinguishes between 'public revelation' and 'private revelations'. The two realities differ not only in degree but also in essence"... "In this context, it now becomes possible to understand rightly the concept of private revelation, which refers to all the visions and revelations which have taken place since the completion of the New Testament. This is the category to which we must assign the message of Fatima. In this respect, let us listen once again to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Throughout the ages, there have been so-called 'private' revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church... It is not their role to complete Christ's definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history" (No. 67). The Catholic Church teaches that public revelation was completed, and therefore was concluded, with the death of the last apostle (Vatican II, Dei Verbum 4), but private revelation has continued. The church holds that approved private revelations, such as visions, voices and apparitions have been judged as coming from God in all probability, but they do not have to be accepted by the faithful whereas teachings within the deposit of faith do have to be believed and accepted. That said, these apparitions of the Virgin Mary, especially the two major ones of Lourdes and Fatima, have assumed an importance equal to biblical revelations and the Gospels themselves. However Marian apparitions really are in the realm of private revelations and thus do not have to be believed as having supernatural origins. This study sets out to show that Marian apparitions actually have their origins in natural not supernatural phenomena.Whilst there have been hundreds, perhaps thousands of Marian apparitions only 16 have been classified as 'Bishop Approved Apparitions with Vatican Recognition' and 7 ' Coptic Approved Apparitions'. This book refers to several of these. Most often, Marian apparitions occur in Roman Catholic countries wherein the seers are usually young children between the ages of 6 and 12. One natural explanation of Marian apparitions was suggested by the American parapsychologist D. Scott Rogo wrote that it is "possible that they are projections of images latent in our minds which literally become temporarily real on rare occasions.....The key to understanding Marian apparitions may be in their tendency to occur at times of social and/or political crisis. At such times of stress, some form of mass telepathic communication may occur in the collective unconscious of the threatened culture. This may lead to the formation of a "group mind", which, in turn, results in the projection of a Marian visitation." Quite how that would result in apparitions such as Lourdes and Fatima is not clear. What were the means?Ruling out the supernatural, here, the author examines natural causes beginning with hallucinations such as: the religious ones hierophany associated with sacred groves; apophenia, seeing patterns within random data and pareidolia when random stimuli, images or sounds are transformed by our minds into familiar patterns where none actually exists. Biological and geological causes are examined such as: marsh gases seepages of abiotic or natural gases causing hallucinations; geomagnetic and natural electrical discharges such as thunderstorms and especially White Ladies, dazzling balls of light.Other possible causes may arise out of the psychological traits of pre-pubescent girls and especially the levels of magnetite in their brains. One of the characteristics of the alleged Marian utterances is the variability of their reading difficulties levels as measured on the Gunning Fog Index.
