Book Personal Recollections of the Civil War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Personal Recollections of the Civil War Classic Reprint written by James Madison Stone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of the Civil War This volume does, not claim to be a tactical, or strategic history of the campaigns of which it treats; it aims rather to be a narrative of the every-day life and experience of the private soldier in camp and field - how he lived, how he marched, how he fought and how he suffered. No sooner had some of the volunteers reached the front, and been subjected to the hardships and exposures of army life, than they fell sick, were sent to the hospital and were discharged without passing through any serious campaigns. Others were wounded early, were disabled and were never able to return to their regiments. The more fortunate passed sound and unscathed through battle after battle and campaign after campaign through the whole war. Three years of active campaigning and a year in the hospital was the allotment of the writer, who thus was in the service from the beginning to the end of the war. Whatever the merits or demerits of this work may be, the impressions and the composition are my own. They are an elaboration of notes made during the war and directly after it, following which, it has taken the form of a diary. Book Personal Recollections of Lincoln Classic Reprint

Download or read book Personal Recollections of Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Grenville M. Dodge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Lincoln My Comrades and Friends: If there is any person living who should be grateful for such an opportunity as this, and before such an audience, to pay his tribute to Abraham Lincoln, it is myself, for as President he raised me from a citizen to the highest command and highest rank in the army. He was my friend from the time I first met him until I helped to lay him away in Springfield, Illinois. No one can appreciate what that friendship and what his acts were to me, unless they have experienced the benefit of it as I have. Now, before I take up the subject I am to speak upon, I want to read to you Abraham Lincoln's own biography of himself, to show you from what a simple and low station he arose to be a great General, a great Statesman, a most just and kind ruler - the best of this era. In a letter to Mr. F. Fell he writes: I was born February 12, 1809, in Hardin county, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virginia of undistinguished families - second families perhaps I should say. My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks, some of whom now reside in Adams and others in Macon counties, Illinois. My paternal grandfather. Book Recollections Personal and Literary Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections Personal and Literary Classic Reprint written by Richard Henry Stoddard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections, Personal and Literary His youth showed again how much more inborn tendency has to do with one's life than any exter nal forces, such as guardianship, means, and what we call education. The thrush takes to the bough, wheresoever hatched and fledged. Many waters cannot quench genius, neither can the floods drown it. The story of Dickens's boyhood, as told by him self, is not more pathetic, nor is its outcome more beautiful, than the story of Richard Henry Stod dard's experiences, his orphanage, his few years' meagre schooling, his work as a boy in all sorts of shifting occupations, the attempt to make a learned blacksmith of him, his final apprenticeship to iron moulding, at which he worked on the East Side from his eighteenth to his twenty-first year. As Dr. Griswold put it, he began to mould his thoughts into the symmetry of verse while he moulded the molten metal into shapes of grace. Stoddard, how ever, afterward said that a knowledge of foundries was not one of the learned doctor's strong points. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Distinguished Generals Writing contemporaneous history is the most thank less of tasks, and I discover also one of the least inde pendent of labors. Still I have not written with a goose quill, and there has been some gall in my ink, yet I do; not think I have any thing in the ensuing chapters to blot. I do not think I have done any man injustice. I have written many sentences and made many assertions which will doubtless be termed strong, but in writing these I am only the amanuensis of truth; and I write with the firm belief that historical truth should be only less sacred than religious truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Earliest Years at Vassar: Personal Recollections The more I recall of the early times, the more unwritable any account becomes by reason of the personal element The charm and delight lay chiefly in the close confidence of mutual friendly relations. "A chiel amang us taking notes" would not have been tolerated in those days. I never expected to regret not keeping a a journal, but I do now as I realize how much precious and interesting history has been lost in consequence. One of the first teachers in the Latin department had to deal with a student so literal as to afford much amusement by her continual habit of asking, "What is the exact date of this event?" One day in class, allusion was made to the story of Deucalion and Pyrrha, when the girl unthinkingly began her usual query. The teacher despairingly interrupted, - "Thank heaven, Miss -, there is a period in history in which there are no dates." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections: From Early Life to Old Age, of Mary Somerville, With Selections From Her Correspondence Few thoughtful minds will read without emotion my mother's own account of the wonderful energy and in domitable perseverance by which, in her ardent thirst for knowledge, she overcame obstacles apparently insar mountable, at a time when women were well-nigh totally debarred from education and the almost intuitive way in which she entered upon studies of which she had scarcely heard the names, living, as she did, among persons to whom they were utterly unknown, and who disapproved of her devotion to pursuits so different from those of ordinary young girls at the end of the last century, especially in Scotland, which was far more old-fashioned and primitive than Englan d. Nor is her simple account of her early days without interest, when, as a lonely child, she wandered by the seashore, and on the links of Burntisland, collecting shells and flowers or spent the clear, cold nights at her window, watching the starlit heavens, whose mysteries she was destined one day to penetrate in all their pro found and sublime laws, making clear to others that knowledge which she herself had acquired, at the cost of so hard a struggle. Robie; myself was one of the sergeants. Soon after the battle of Lexington, Capt. Warner took orders to raise a company, and invited me and other young men to enlist.
