Book Living Narrative

Download or read book Living Narrative written by Elinor Ochs and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pathbreaking book looks at everyday storytelling as a twofold phenomenon--a response to our desire for coherence, but also to our need to probe and acknowledge the enigmatic aspects of experience. Letting us listen in on dinner-table conversation, prayer, and gossip, Elinor Ochs and Lisa Capps develop a way of understanding the seemingly contradictory nature of everyday narrative--as a genre that is not necessarily homogeneous and as an activity that is not always consistent but consistently serves our need to create selves and communities. Focusing on the ways in which narrative is co-constructed, and on the variety of moral stances embodied in conversation, the authors draw out the instructive inconsistencies of these collaborative narratives, whose contents and ordering are subject to dispute, flux, and discovery. In an eloquent last chapter, written as Capps was waging her final battle with cancer, they turn to unfinished narratives, those stories that will never have a comprehensible end. With a hybrid perspective--part humanities, part social science--their book captures these complexities and fathoms the intricate and potent narratives that live within and among us.

Book Developing Narrative Structure

Download or read book Developing Narrative Structure written by Allyssa McCabe and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective narration, the telling of stories or recounting of personal experiences, is an art requiring skills that appear crucial for children's language development and literacy acquisition. This volume serves an important purpose because it pulls together the widely scattered literature in the field, exploring the ways in which oral narrative structure develops in children and how it may be facilitated. It presents new empirical studies on genres of narrative, the role narrative structure plays in emergent literacy, the relationship between narrative language and autobiographical memory, and ways in which teachers and parents facilitate or hinder children's narrative development. The empirical research presented here draws from diverse groups, including Hispanic, African-American, and Anglo-American children from rural and urban America and Canada.

Book Personal Narrative of Occurrences During Lord Elgin s Second Embassy to China 1860

Download or read book Personal Narrative of Occurrences During Lord Elgin s Second Embassy to China 1860 written by Henry Brougham Loch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Narrative of Occurrences During Lord Elgin's Second Embassy to China, 1860 At the request of many friends, I have been persuaded to yield to a proposal of Mr Murray's to publish a new Edition of this "Personal Narrative of Events in China." Mr Murray made this suggestion a year or two ago to my dear husband, who was prepared to consider it favourably, but his natural modesty made him doubt the continued interest that has always been shown in the little volume. I believe there is nothing in the book he did not feel to be perfectly accurate, and that he had no wish to change any part of it. I am glad, therefore, that his account of very stirring events should be reproduced at a moment when the thoughts of a new generation are turned towards a people whom "Henry Loch" believed capable of great things if wisely governed. Book Addiction Attachment Trauma and Recovery The Power of Connection Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology

Download or read book Addiction Attachment Trauma and Recovery The Power of Connection Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology written by Oliver J. Morgan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new model of addiction that incorporates neurobiology, social relationships, and ecological systems. Understanding addiction is no longer just about understanding neurons or genes, broken brain functioning, learning, or faulty choices. Oliver J. Morgan provides a fresh take on addiction and recovery by presenting a more inclusive framework than traditional understanding. Cutting- edge work in attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, and trauma is integrated with ecological- systems thinking to provide a consilient and comprehensive picture of addiction. Humans are born into connection and require nourishing relationships for healthy living. Adversities, however, bring fragmentation and create the conditions for ill health. They create vulnerabilities. In order to cope, individuals can turn to alternatives, “substitute relationships” that ease the pain of disconnection. These can become addictions. Addiction, Attachment, Trauma, and Recovery presents a model, a method, and a mandate. This new focus calls for change in the established ways we think and behave about addiction and recovery. It reorients understanding and clinical practice for mental health and addiction counselors, psychologists, and social workers, as well as for addicts and those who love them.

Book The Language of Outsourced Call Centers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Language of Outsourced Call Centers is the first book to explore a large-scale corpus representing the typical kinds of interactions and communicative tasks in outsourced call centers located in the Philippines and serving American customers. The specific goals of this book are to conduct a corpus-based register comparison between outsourced call center interactions, face-to-face American conversations, and spontaneous telephone exchanges; and to study the dynamics of cross-cultural communication between Filipino call center agents and American callers, as well as other demographic groups of participants in outsourced call center transactions, e.g., gender of speakers, agents' experience and performance, and types of transactional tasks. The research design relies on a number of analytical approaches, including corpus linguistics and discourse analysis, and combines quantitative and qualitative examination of linguistic data in the investigation of the frequency distribution and functional characteristics of a range of lexico/syntactic features of outsourced call center discourse.
