Book Personal Journeys

Download or read book Personal Journeys written by Peter A. Fiore and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains nine personal essays on six prominent classic authors written for the average reader who is minimally familiar with the authors, probably just heard of them by name, and who would like an introduction to these literary figures and their works. The authors have been carefully chosen to represent the early classical Italian and British tradition, Dante Alighieri, John Donne, John Milton, and the 20th century British and American tradition, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Evelyn Waugh, Flannery O’Connor. The underlying argument of the book is that the authors’ Christian faith gave impetus to their creative output. Although all the observations about the authors and their works are fully researched and based on Professor Fiore’s years as professor and critic, a conscious effort has been made to avoid esoteric research problems, and their consequent footnotes, in an effort to present a readable and intimate approach to the writers. The book is ideal for the general reader, the undergraduate student, and the lover of great literature.

Book excerpt: There are countless academic books on the subject of childhood leukemia. The idea behind this book, however, is very different. Here, we look at the extraordinary story of childhood leukemia from very distinct and unique perspectives: a distinguished physician who has lived through the transition of the disease from despair to success (and who played a key role in the latter); a distinguished laboratory scientist who has helped breach the barrenness of biological ignorance of the disease to reveal its nature; a patient who has been confronted with the tough realities of the illness and has been cured; and parents who have been given the worst possible news ? that their child is diagnosed with leukemia ? and who have endured the prolonged treatment, hope, and despair or relief that follows. These individuals recount their personal experiences, challenges, and ?interactions? with the disease in ways that complement and contrast with each other. Thus, not only does the book contain extraordinary stories involving the very best of biomedical research and clinical advances, but it also embodies very human tales of resilience, optimism and courage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming a culturally proficient leader requires the kind of courage, clarity, and insight that can only come from looking inward first. It’s a personal learning journey of will and skill, and if you’re up to the challenge, one that will change how you see your school, your students, and yourself as you build your own cultural competence. Consider this second edition of Culturally Proficient Leadershipyour personal road map for navigating that journey. Each chapter of Culturally Proficient Leadership invites you to put your experiences up front and challenges you to reframe your story based on multiple viewpoints—now, notably, with the addition of new coauthors Delores Lindsey and Eloise Kemp Terrell, who have their own remarkable stories and insight to share. We invite you to embark on this journey of self-awareness, of moral courage, and of the life-affirming power of human diversity. “I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together—unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the same and may not come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction: toward a better future for our children and our grandchildren.” —Barack Obama, Los Angeles Times, 2008

Book Bad Tourist

Download or read book Bad Tourist written by Suzanne Roberts and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both a memoir in travel essays and an anti-guidebook, Bad Tourist takes us across four continents to fifteen countries, showing us what not to do when traveling. A woman learning to claim her own desires and adventures, Suzanne Roberts encounters lightning and landslides, sharks and piranha-infested waters, a nightclub drugging, burning bodies, and brief affairs as she searches for the love of her life and finally herself. Throughout her travels Roberts tries hard not to be a bad tourist, but owing to her cultural blind spots, things don’t always go as planned. Fearlessly confessional, shamelessly funny, and wholly unapologetic, Roberts offers a refreshingly honest account of the joys and absurdities of confronting new landscapes and cultures, as well as new versions of herself. Raw, bawdy, and self-effacing, Bad Tourist is a journey packed with delights and surprises—both of the greater world and of the mysterious workings of the heart.

Book The Legacy Journey

Download or read book The Legacy Journey written by Dave Ramsey and published by Ramsey Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the Bible really say about money? About wealth? How much does God expect you to give to others? How does wealth affect your friendships, marriage, and children? How much is “enough”? There’s a lot of bad information in our culture today about wealth―and the wealthy. Worse, there’s a growing backlash in America against our most successful citizens, but why? To many, wealth is seen as the natural result of hard work and wise money management. To others, wealth is viewed as the ultimate, inexcusable sin. This has left many godly men and women confused about what to do with the resources God’s put in their care. They were able to build wealth using God’s ways of handling money, but then they are left feeling guilty about it. Is this what God had in mind?

Book excerpt: Journeys Exposed: Women's Writing, Photography, and Mobility examines contemporary literature written by women that are all in different ways related to Italy. It argues that photography provides women with a means to expose aspects of their nomadic self and of the others’ mobile lives within and beyond the writing process. By resorting to the visual, women individualistically respond to forms of hegemonic power, fragmentation, displacement, loss and marginality, and make these experiences key to their creative production.
