Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of their long history on Iranian soil the Jews of Iran have produced a large body of literature which has been little studied and published. This volume deals with one of the most prominent Jewish poets of Iran, known as 'Emrānī (1454-1536 C.E.). The book consists of three parts. The first part studies 'Emrānī's time, life and work and analyzes in depth the poet's last major work entitled Ganj-nāme (The Book of Treasure). Ganj-nāme, which is closely modeled after compositions of classical Persian literature, is 'Emrānī's versified commentary of the ethical tractate of the Mishnah commonly known as Pirqey Abot (“The Chapters of the Fathers”). The second part of the book offers the English translation, annotation and source study of Ganj-nāme. The third and last part of the book provides a critical edition of Ganj-nāme.
Download or read book Early Persian Lexicography written by Solomon I. Baevskii and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only study in a Western European language of an important part of the intellectual and cultural history of the Persianate world in its formative phase. Persian dictionaries (farhangs) of the Islamic era, compiled principally in India, represent a unique linguistic undertaking that has no counterpart in pre-modern Europe. Solomon Baevskii (University of St Petersburg, emeritus) based his work on books and manuscripts from South Asia, Iran, Central Asia and Russia, charting the evolution of these documents from lexical and cultural-historical perspectives. Published originally in Russian in 1989, the book is here presented in a new English edition, revised and updated by John Perry, Professor of Persian at the University of Chicago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection of essays by leading international scholars gives a profound introduction into the great diversity and richness of facets forming the study of one of earth’s most exciting areas, the Iranian and Caucasian lands. Each of the 37 contributions sheds light on a very special topic, the range of which comprises historical, cultural, ethnographical, religious, political and last but not least literary and linguistic issues, beginning from the late antiquity up to current times. Especially during the last decennia these two regions gained greater interest worldwide due to several developments in politics and culture. This fact grants the book, intended as a festschrift for Prof. Garnik Asatrian, a special relevance. Contributors: Victoria Arakelova; Marco Bais; Uwe Bläsing; Vahe S. Boyajian; Claudia A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the Persian language has grown during the last few decades, as a consequence of which numerous studies and analyses of different size have been made. The present bibliography is a selection of essays, articles and monographs on the New Persian Language (including the variants Dari and Tajik and in addition local and regional accents such as Tehrani, Isfahani, and ShiraziPersian) written - up to the year 2001 - in the following languages: Persian, Arabic, English, French, German, Italian. Apart from the subject matter aspects like relevance to Persian, topicality and reliability were decisive, too. The present material has not been listed according to strict library usage, but the author has tried to combine the accuracy and conciseness of the entries with userfriendliness. Certain kinds of type (small capitals, italics) are intended to make it easier for the reader to find their way through the mass of information and moreover the reader is given further details which possibly offer more information than the title itself. For optimal use of the enclosed bibliography five indexes (Chronological Index, Subject Index, Language Index, Word Index, Person and Title Index) have been provided which offer the reader special information.

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Judaism Volume 5 Jews in the Medieval Islamic World written by Phillip I. Lieberman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 1216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 5 examines the history of Judaism in the Islamic World from the rise of Islam in the early sixth century to the expulsion of Jews from Spain at the end of the fifteenth. This period witnessed radical transformations both within the Jewish community itself and in the broader contexts in which the Jews found themselves. The rise of Islam had a decisive influence on Jews and Judaism as the conditions of daily life and elite culture shifted throughout the Islamicate world. Islamic conquest and expansion affected the shape of the Jewish community as the center of gravity shifted west to the North African communities, and long-distance trading opportunities led to the establishment of trading diasporas and flourishing communities as far east as India. By the end of our period, many of the communities on the 'other' side of the Mediterranean had come into their own—while many of the Jewish communities in the Islamicate world had retreated from their high-water mark.

Book excerpt: Republication of Arthur Jeffery's important study, "The Foreign Vocabulary of the Qur'?n," offers a new generation of scholars and students access to this foundational text. Arranged in Arabic alphabetical order, Jeffery's compendium of philological scholarship remains an indispensable tool for any serious study of Qur'?nic semantics. Drawing upon etymological examination of languages such as Greek, Persian, Syriac, Ethiopic, Coptic and Nabataean, Jeffery's work illuminates the rich linguistic texture of Islam's holy book. His lengthy introductory essay explores the exegetical analysis offered by medieval Muslim commentators as well as the insights provided by more recent research.
