This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persecutions of the Greeks in Turkey Since the Beginning of the European War The persecutions of the Greeks in Turkey, since the declaration of the European war, are nothing but the continuation of the program put into operation by the Young Turks in the year 1913, with the object of annihilating Hellenism. In order that those who are ignorant of conditions in Turkey may understand the objects and the mainsprings of these persecutions, as well as the methods by which the uprooting of Hellenism in the territories subject to Turkey was sought, it is necessary, before narrating the persecutions that began with the last months of 1914, to review briefly the occurrences of the preceding period. There will thus be no room for doubt that we have here to do with an intensive continuation of a program which had as its object the annihilation of Hellenism in Turkey. Anyone who looks into the events that followed the restoration of constitutional government in Turkey becomes convinced that the natural course of history was not at that time to be changed simply by the banishing of a tyrant and the appearance of a supposedly parliamentary government. PART I THE POLICY OF THE YOUNG TURKS TOWARD THE GREEKS FROM THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE SHAM "CONSTITUTIONAL REGIME" UP TO THE BALKAN WAR The investigation into the events in Turkey subsequent to the restoration of the "Constitution" proves conclusively that the elimination of the Greek element in Turkey, which began, generally speaking, in 1913, was not a decision taken on the spur of the moment nor a simple result of the Balkan War, nor did it arise from a mistaken policy on the part of the Greeks in Turkey nor from their own desire to expatriate themselves, as the Young Turks maintain, but was the application of a pre-existent well-arranged program, a policy which was applied to the very limit at a time when political conditions permitted it and external instigation and support rendered easy what had previously been regarded as difficult. It is well known how Hellenism received the Young Turk revolution. Even though this was a purely Turkish nationalistic uprising, it was enthusiastically greeted because it was represented as being at the same time a liberalizing movement, and because it promised equality to all the races in the Ottoman Empire. It is well known how the Greek element, which in the time preceding the proclamation of the Constitution had, under the system of special "privileges," insured its national progress and development, and its general prosperity, it is well known, I say, how the Greek element in the early days of the movement co-operated with the Young Turks and contributed materially to their success. Although the revolution dissipated the national hopes of Hellenism, the Greeks, nevertheless, manifested inde r scribable enthusiasm over it, in the hope at least of the attainment of a future way of living like human...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persecution of the Greeks in Turkey, 1914-1918 This Diocese comprises fifty-two Communities, and contains a population of 51,196 inhabitants. It is the one that suffered the most from the atrocities of the Balkan War, the savage persecutions of 1914, and the consequences of the Turk and Bulgarian alliance of September 1915. All that nature could devise in the way of unmerciful bastinado, unjustified arrests, imprisonment of peaceful, well-to-do people, with the sole object of extorting money from them, seizure of fortunes, requisitioning of houses and shops, etc., etc., all were put into practice, during the Bulgarian occupation of Thrace, with a view to exterminating the Greek element there, such action being not only tolerated, but also promoted by the highest Bulgarian officials. When, in July 1913, Eastern Thrace was reconquered by the Turks, the Greek population, especially the peasants, suffered all kinds of martyrdom not only on the part of the irregulars but also of the regular Turkish troops. In March, 1914, began the ummerciful persecution of the Christians, which directly inspired by the then Governor of Adrianople, Hadji Adil Bey, conducted by Government officials, and carried out by bands of gipsies and Musulman Albanians, forced the Greek population to leave their country. (a.) Persecution before and during the year 1914. (a.) Adrianople Region. 1. The remainder of the inhabitants were forced to flee to Bulgaria. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
