Book excerpt: Dating violence is a prominent problem among college students that can result in harmful physical and mental health outcomes. To date, much research has focused on risk factors, but less is known about protective factors that may decrease the likelihood of dating violence. As such, the current paper examines protective factors (e.g. religion, positive parental relationships) against perpetrating and/or experiencing dating violence and whether these protective factors operate similarly for both perpetration and victimization. Data were gathered in 2013-2014 at two large public universities using pencil and paper surveys (N = 1482). Bivariate results revealed that women have more protective factors than men. Multivariate results showed that religious attendance, lower entitlement, more positive maternal relationship quality, and having more close friends with lower rates of drinking were all protective against dating violence perpetration and victimization. Additionally, lower respondent drinking was also protective against both dating violence perpetration and victimization. These findings highlight the importance of positive friendships as protective factors against dating violence victimization and perpetration. Finally, current study findings also emphasize that abstaining from alcohol is protective against dating violence victimization and perpetration.

Book excerpt: Adolescent dating violence is commonly experienced by adolescents and is associated with a variety of negative outcomes. Stress and coping and social learning theories suggest that dating violence victimization may predict increased substance use and dating violence perpetration. However, few studies have assessed these relations over time, and existing studies have not assessed physical and psychological dating violence victimization separately nor focused on early adolescent populations. The current study addressed these gaps by examining longitudinal relations between physical and psychological dating violence victimization and substance use and physical and psychological dating violence perpetration among early adolescents. The extent to which gender and class norms for dating violence moderated these relations was also examined. Participants included two cohorts of sixth grade students who reported being involved in a dating relationship at Waves 1 and 2 (N = 2,022; 43% female; 52% African American, 21% Latino/a, 20% European American, and 7% other). Analyses utilized a multilevel approach whereby students were represented at Level 1 and classes (scores for students in the same cohort and school; n = 74) at Level 2. Models tested direct effects from Wave 1 psychological and physical victimization to Wave 2 outcomes and the extent to which gender moderated this effect. Models including psychological and physical perpetration also tested cross-level interactions between Level 1 dating violence victimization and Level 2 class norms for dating violence. Key findings indicated that gender moderated relations between physical and psychological victimization and psychological perpetration. High levels of psychological victimization predicted greater change in psychological perpetration for girls as compared to boys and high levels of physical victimization predicted greater change in psychological perpetration for boys as compared to girls. Additionally, physical and psychological victimization significantly predicted changes in substance use. High levels of physical victimization predicted greater change in substance use, whereas high levels of psychological victimization predicted less change in substance use. These findings highlight the need to address dating violence early in middle school, so as to prevent negative outcomes associated with victimization by a dating partner.

These interconnections have critical implications for conducting research that can produce valid conclusions about the causes and consequences of abuse, maltreatment, and trauma. The accumulated data on co-occurrence also provide strong evidence that prevention and intervention should be organized around the full context of individuals’ experiences, not narrowly defined subtypes of violence. Managing the flood of new research and practice innovations is a challenge, however. New means of communication and integration are needed to meet this challenge, and the Web of Violence is intended to contribute to this process by serving as a concise overview of the conceptual and empirical work that form a basis for understanding the interconnections across forms of violence throughout the lifespan. It also offers ideas and directions for prevention, intervention, and public policy. A number of initiatives are emerging to integrate the findings on co-occurrence into research and action. The American Psychological Association established a new journal, Psychology of Violence, which is a forum for research on all types of violence. Sherry Hamby is the founding editor and John Grych is associate editor and co-editor of a special issue on the co-occurrence of violence in 2012. Dr. Hamby also is a co-investigator of the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV), which has drawn attention to polyvictimization. Polyvictimization is a focus of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Defending Childhood Initiative and has recently been featured in calls for grant proposals by the Office of Victims of Crime and National Institutes for Justice.

While past studies have used multiple theories to explain risks for dating violence perpetration and victimization, the literature on dating violence remains disjointed, using only one or two theoretical perspectives in their models of dating violence. In this study, I examine dating violence perpetration and victimization from four key theoretical perspectives: the background-situational model of dating violence, social learning theory, attachment theory, and the antisocial orientation perspective. Analyses demonstrated that elements of all four theoretical perspectives were associated with dating violence perpetration and victimization. In addition, religiosity and maternal relationship quality were important protective factors against dating violence. Implications of the study findings on practice and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Teen dating violence (TDV) is a common problem among adolescents, yet little is known about the risk markers for TDV perpetration and victimization. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to explore the relationship between family-of-origin factors (i.e., attachment, witnessing inter-parental violence, experiencing abuse as a child, poor parenting, and parental support) and TDV victimization and perpetration. A total of 27 studies, which yielded 81 effect sizes examining physical TDV perpetration and victimization, were included in the study. Results from our analysis revealed that anxious attachment was the strongest risk marker for TDV perpetration and experiencing abuse as a child was the strongest risk marker for TDV victimization. Our results also revealed that witnessing inter-parental violence was a significant risk marker for TDV perpetration and victimization, poor parenting was a significant risk marker for TDV victimization, avoidant attachment and experiencing abuse as a child were significant risk markers for perpetration, and parental support was a significant protective marker against TDV victimization. These findings highlight the importance of family factors when identifying adolescents who are at risk for TDV, as well as developing violence prevention and intervention programs.

The first is a study on dating violence perpetration, with the associations of relationship commitment and jealousy on dating violence perpetration examined. Acceptability of violence, another variable related to violence perpetration, was examined as a potential moderator of relationship commitment and jealousy on dating violence perpetration. Using a sample of 155 male and 417 female college students, t-tests showed that women reported higher perpetration levels than men. Hierarchical regression analyses found that only jealousy was associated with dating violence perpetration - and only for women. Neither relationship commitment nor acceptability of violence was associated with perpetration for either men or women. Additionally, acceptability of violence did not emerge as a significant moderator between for these relationships. However, the three-way interaction of acceptability of violence, relationship commitment, and jealousy for dating violence perpetration was significant. In addition, the two-way interaction between jealousy and relationship commitment was significant. However, when fully interactive models were run separately by gender, both of these interactions failed to reach statistically significant levels. The second study examined the effects of dating violence victimization. Two of the most often reported consequences of dating violence are its impact on the victim's satisfaction with their relationship with their abusive partner, and its impact on the victim's mental health. Research suggests that the strength of these relationships may be moderated by the degree to which dating violence is acceptable to the victim. However, studies of these relationships have been limited to samples of victimized women. Using the same sample as study 1, t-tests for gender differences found that men and women reported similar dating violence victimization levels. Hierarchical regression analyses found that for men, only mental health problems were significantly associated with higher levels of victimization. For women, dating violence victimization was associated with decreased relationship satisfaction and increased mental health problems. However, contrary to the hypothesis, acceptability of violence was not associated with the relationship between satisfaction and dating violence victimization or mental health problems and dating violence victimization for either men or women.
