The figures are derived from the Annual Schools Census in January 2003; and some estimated data from the survey about the education of permanently excluded pupils collected from all LEAs (PLASC). Key findings include that the total number of permanent exclusions from primary, secondary and special schools in 2001-02 was about 9,500 (compared to an estimated 9,135 the previous year). This represents a decrease of over 30 per cent from its 1997/98 level of around 12,000. Of this 2001-02 figure, 81 per cent of exclusions were for secondary schools, 15 per cent from primary schools and four per cent from special schools.

Download or read book Girls and Exclusion written by Audrey Osler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread view that girls are succeeding in education and are therefore 'not a problem' is a myth. By drawing directly on girls' own accounts and experiences of school life and those of professionals working with disaffected youth, this book offers startling new perspectives on the issue of exclusion and underachievement amongst girls. This book demonstrates how the social and educational needs of girls and young women have slipped down the policy agenda in the UK and internationally. Osler and Vincent argue for a re-definition of school exclusion which covers the types of exclusion commonly experienced by girls, such as truancy, self-exclusion or school dropout as a result of pregnancy. Drawing on girls' own ideas, the authors make recommendations as to how schools might develop as more inclusive communities where the needs of both boys and girls are addressed equally. The book is essential reading for postgraduate students, teachers, policy-makers and LEA staff dedicated to genuine social and educational inclusion.

Book The Excludables From mainstream classroom to prison education understanding the children we exclude and why

Download or read book The Excludables From mainstream classroom to prison education understanding the children we exclude and why written by Kat Stern and published by John Catt. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to 'The Excludables', it is time to shake up the debate. Students who are excluded from school, and society, are at a higher risk of being incarcerated. They are more likely to have mental health difficulties, special educational needs, live in poverty, have social care involvement and they disproportionately come from certain ethnic groups. This book pulls on all those threads using up to date research and establishes a deeper understanding of how and why these things affect school behaviours. The factors that lead to exclusion are complex, and this book meets that challenge head on, including the kinds of “crunchy bits” that are usually avoided at all costs, such as children who are high in callous-unemotional traits, and trauma-informed approaches in prison education. Written by an experienced educator and behaviour consultant, this book steps away from the worn-out discourse that surrounds behaviour in schools, and away from the notion that educators are the only relevant experts. Get ready to explore genetics, bias, epistemic trust, and the human stress-response system; all examined through the lens of the realities of behavioural challenge faced by educators every day. This is a read that will confront everyone in some way.

  • ISBN : 1134112521
  • Pages : 355 pages

Download or read book Racism and Education written by David Gillborn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-03-11 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education policy is not designed to eliminate race inequality but to sustain it at manageable levels. This is the inescapable conclusion of the first major study of the English education system using ‘critical race theory’. David Gillborn has been described as Britain’s ‘most influential race theorist in education’. In this book he dissects the role of racism across the education system; from national policies to school-level decisions about discipline and academic selection. Race inequality is not accidental and things are not getting better. Despite occasional ‘good news’ stories about fluctuations in statistics, the reality is that race inequality is so deeply entrenched that it is effectively ‘locked in’ as a permanent feature of the system. Built on a foundation of compelling evidence, from national statistics to studies of classroom life, this book shows how race inequality is shaped and legitimized across the system. The study explores a series of key issues including: the impact of the ‘War on Terror’ and how policy privileges the interests of white people how assessment systems produce race inequality exposes the ‘gifted and talented’ programme as a form of eugenic thinking based on discredited and racist myths about intelligence and ability documents the Stephen Lawrence case revealing how policy makers have betrayed earlier commitments to race equality shows how ‘model minorities’ are created and used to counter anti-racism how education policy is implicated in the defence of white power. Conspiracy? Racism & Education takes critical antiracist analyses to a new level and represents a fundamental challenge to current assumptions in the field. With a preface by Richard Delgado, one of the founders of critical race theory.

Book The State and Education Policy The Academies Programme

Download or read book The State and Education Policy The Academies Programme written by Helen M. Gunter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection draws together contributions from leading researchers and participants to explore a major reform process of the state and education system in particular. The shift from welfare-based provision of public services to the quasi-market with private delivery and philanthropic investment is an issue that needs a thorough examination through evidence and rigorous argument. This book seeks to do this by not only charting events and providing detailed examination about what is happening but also by locating these developments within a contemporary political and social analytical framework. Topics covered include: * the legal and political process of establishing Academies * the working and impact of Academies using a range of data and perspectives * the debates and issues regarding this major reform, with comparative perspectives. The State and Education Policy shows how the Academies Programme in England is an important site for examining the growth of neoliberal ideas and practices in the framing and delivery of public services such as education.
