Book Periostat for Periodontal Disease

Download or read book Periostat for Periodontal Disease written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodontal disease is a common condition which may be classified as either gingivitis or periodontitis. Patients with gingivitis have gingival inflammation, redness, and bleeding with probing, brushing or flossing. Periodontitis includes gingivitis and loss of supportive tissues including alveolar bone. As a result, there is a loss of attachment of teeth and a probe placed between the gingiva and tooth structures will show increased probing depth. Bone loss around the teeth is detectable on radiographs. Progression of disease may lead to increased tooth mobility and tooth loss. Periodontal disease is closely associated with oral hygiene and is often preventable. Treatment includes good dental hygiene, and scaling and root planing by a dental professional to remove subgingival plaque. Adjunctive therapies include topical or systemic antibiotics. Low dose doxycycline (Periostat 20 mg twice daily) is thought to inhibit collagenase activity and prevent breakdown of connective tissue and alveolar bone in patients with periodontitis. This report will review the evidence on the clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and guidelines for use of doxycycline (Periostat) to inform funding decisions by drug programs.

Book Drugs Diseases and the Periodontium

Download or read book Drugs Diseases and the Periodontium written by R. A. Seymour and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodontal disease is caused by bacterial plaque and is the most frequent reason for tooth loss in adults. It is now well-recognized that certain systemic diseases can affect the response of the periodontal tissues to plaque. Furthermore, certain types of systemic drug therapy can have an adverse effect on the gingival tissues, whereas other drugs with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions may be beneficial to the periodontal tissues. All of these problems are encountered in dental practice, especially those specializing in periodontology. The aim of this book is to document and discuss the effect of various systemic factors and drugs on the periodontal tissues and their response to plaque. This book is aimed at the periodontologist or dental practitioner with a specialty in periodontology. The book is also a useful reference for postgraduate students.
