Book Perioperative Allogenic Red Blood Cell Transfusion

Download or read book Perioperative Allogenic Red Blood Cell Transfusion written by Laura Baker and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red blood cells are commonly administered during the perioperative period, however our understanding of available guidance informing transfusion decisions as well as appropriateness of current practice is not well understood. Blood transfusions are associated with post-operative morbidity and possibly worse long-term outcomes. Furthermore, they are a costly and limited resource. They should therefore be used sparingly. The objective of this thesis was to further our understanding of guidance available for administration of intraoperative red blood blood cell transfusion, as well as conduct an audit of the appropriateness of transfusions administered during the perioperative period. This thesis is composed of both a systematic review as well as a retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database. The systematic review of identified 10 guidelines published between 1992-2018 that included indications for intraoperative transfusions. Six provided objective clearly defined criteria for transfusion based on hemoglobin triggers (range 60-100g/L) or hematocrit (

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patient Blood Management (PBM) is an innovative clinical concept that aims to reduce the need for allogenic blood transfusions, cut health-care costs, and avert or correct the risk factors related to blood transfusion, thus minimizing the rate of side effects and complications. This comprehensive hands-on volume offers a three-point approach for the implementation of PBM to improve patient outcome, focusing on how to prevent or treat anemia, reduce blood loss, and increase anemia tolerance. The book also goes beyond preoperative PBM, with detailed accounts of coagulation disorder management and the administration of coagulation products and platelet concentrates. Special Features: Presents a clear three-pillar strategy for the application of PBM: diagnosis and treatment of anemia, reduction of peri-interventional blood loss, and optimization of the tolerance to anemia in the everyday clinical setting Covers issues such as PBM during surgery, requirements for modern transfusion medicine, ordering blood products, the role of pre-anesthesia clinics, benchmarking processes, and potential implications of PBM in the public health sector Overview of research in PBM including landmark studies and current clinical trials Boxes in each chapter highlighting key information, core statements, and summaries A multidisciplinary and international team of contributors experienced in PBM Patient Blood Management is a guide for clinicians and residents whose patients are at risk for anemia, coagulation disorders, or severe blood loss. Anesthesiologists, surgeons, and specialists involved in the use of blood and blood products can use the book for quick reference or to learn more about a leading-edge concept for optimizing patient safety and improving outcome.

Book Transfusion in the Intensive Care Unit

Download or read book Transfusion in the Intensive Care Unit written by Nicole P. Juffermans and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to a high incidence of anemia, critically ill patients are frequently transfused, with up to 40% of patients receiving a transfusion during their stay in the Intensive Care Unit. It has become increasingly clear that there is an association between transfusion and adverse outcomes, underlining the need for a careful assessment of the risks and benefits of a blood transfusion. In the last decade, there have been several large clinical trials that have studied red blood cell transfusion triggers in various ICU patient populations, allowing us to take a personalized approach to transfusion. Moreover, ICU patients often suffer from coagulopathy. Recent studies have addressed the effectiveness of fresh frozen plasma and platelets to prevent or treat bleeding. Aiming at a personalized therapy approach in transfusion practice, this book is the first to offer a comprehensive summary of transfusion triggers for red blood cells in specific ICU patient populations and specific conditions. In addition, it discusses evidence for triggers for plasma and platelets and outlines the most common adverse effects of transfusion in the ICU. Transfusion in the Intensive Care Unit is a practical handbook that can be used in everyday practice to guide transfusion and thus will serve as a valuable resource for physicians, fellows and residents working in Intensive Care, Anesthesiology and Cardiac Surgery.

Book Modern Monitoring in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care

Download or read book Modern Monitoring in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care written by Andrew B. Leibowitz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close monitoring of patients during anesthesia is crucial for ensuring positive treatment outcomes and patient safety. The increasing availability of new technologies and the repurposing of older monitors means more patient data is at anesthesiologists' fingertips than ever before. However, this flood of options can be overwhelming. A practical resource for understanding this array of clinical monitoring options in anesthesia, this important text focuses on real-world applications in anesthesia and perioperative care. Reviewing the evidence for improved patient outcomes for monitoring technology, neurological monitoring, echocardiography systems and ultrasound are amongst the techniques covered in a head-to-toe approach. Statistics used by manufacturers to gain approval for their technology are discussed, as well as the under-appreciated risks associated with monitoring such as digital distraction. Future monitoring technologies including wearable systems are explored in depth. Focusing on applied practice, this book is an essential text for front-line healthcare professionals in anesthesia.

Book Tranexamic Acid Use And Preoperative Haemoglobin Level Predict Perioperative Red Blood Cell Transfusions In Hip Arthroplasty

Download or read book Tranexamic Acid Use And Preoperative Haemoglobin Level Predict Perioperative Red Blood Cell Transfusions In Hip Arthroplasty written by Cristiana Campos and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background and Goal of Study:There is a high prevalence of blood product transfusions among patients undergoing total hip replacement surgery.(1) Preoperative estimation of transfusion may be useful to optimize perioperative blood management.(2) The simplest methods to do this are those that identify patients at risk of requiring transfusion support on the basis of the surgical and few clinical parameters.(2) The aim of this study was to assess if we could find in our clinical practice predictors of transfusion.Materials and Methods: This is an observational retrospective study where 178 patients undergoing elective hip arthroplasty were considered. Demographic data (age and sex) as well as preoperative haemoglobin and use of tranexamic acid were included into a logistic regression for perioperative red blood cell transfusion. Data are presented as mean u00b1 standard deviation. Results and Discussion:The logistic regression model showed goodness of fit (Hosmer and Lemeshow test p = 0,953). Preoperative haemoglobin levels and the use of tranexamic acid were statistically significative (p
