Download or read book The Perilous Hunt written by Edith Randam Rogers and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the symbolic language of ballads, a lady's costly dress tells of the beauty of the body beneath it or of the wearer's happiness; a lost hawk or hound foreshadows the hunter's fate long before the plot reaches a turning point. In her original and far-reaching study of such familiar narrative elements, Edith Randam Rogers adds much to our understanding of poetic expression in the ballad tradition. In focusing on individual motifs as they appear in different ballads, different languages, and different periods, Rogers proves the existence of a reliable lingua franca of symbolism in European balladry. Lines or even whole stanzas that have defied interpretation often come to life when the reader is aware of the meaning of a particular motif in such an international vocabulary of images. Thus this book makes available important new critical tools sure to have significant results for ballad scholarship.

Book excerpt: Picture this: I'm chilling at home with my new vampire and ghost roommates when a disgraced witch shows up at our door. Turns out she’s been booted out of her coven for, well, sucking at witching (look at my cross magical species pun!) I'm never one to turn away someone in need of help, and I don't agree with casting people out simply because they have challenges. But before I can do anything to help the witch, my beloved hyena, Penelope, gets kidnapped by the Hair -- my nemesis -- in order to force me to use my anti-magic to help him hunt down and kill magical creatures. The magical equivalent of law enforcement doesn't give a fig about hyena kidnappings, which means that I'm on my own -- well, me and my little ragtag team of magical misfits, now featuring an inept witch. We’ve got to use every trick in the book (including some that aren’t in the book) to rescue Penelope, and make sure I don’t end up being the Hair’s magical hunting dog. Hop on a broomstick and fasten your seatbelt for a wild ride through London’s underbelly of enchantment and danger as we race against the clock in this spellbinding sequel. Grab your copy of Hunting with Magic now and join Priscilla’s madcap magical escapades!

Download or read book Transnational Indians in the North American West written by Clarissa Confer and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of eleven original essays goes beyond traditional, border-driven studies to place the histories of Native Americans, indigenous peoples, and First Nation peoples in a larger context than merely that of the dominant nation. As Transnational Indians in the North American West shows, transnationalism can be expressed in various ways. To some it can be based on dependency, so that the history of the indigenous people of the American Southwest can only be understood in the larger context of Mexico and Central America. Others focus on the importance of movement between Indian and non-Indian worlds as Indians left their (reserved) lands to work, hunt, fish, gather, pursue legal cases, or seek out education, to name but a few examples. Conversely, even natives who remained on reserved lands were nonetheless transnational inasmuch as the reserves did not fully “belong” to them but were administered by a nation-state. Boundaries that scholars once viewed as impermeable, it turns out, can be quite porous. This book stands to be an important contribution to the scholarship that is increasingly breaking free of old boundaries.

Now they are all gone, the men and women I knew when I was young, gone like words on the wind, and I am left here in the twilight to tell you their tale. Sit, then, and listen if you will to the words of Gwernin Kyuarwyd, called Storyteller." So begins the tale of the young Gwernin's adventures as a wandering storyteller and would-be bard in the chaos and contradictions of 6th century Britain. Download or read book Lope de Vega Fuente Ovejuna written by and published by Hispanic Classics. This book was released on 1989-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuente Ovejuna (C.1613) is the most famous and frequently performed play by the creator of Spanish theatre, Lope de Vega (1562-1635). Astonishingly for its period, it celebrates the murder in 1476 of a nobleman, the Grand Commander of the Military Order of Calatrava, by the peasants he had oppressed, and their subsequent solidarity under torture. Fuente Ovejuna, however, is less a history lesson or political tract than an optimistic moral fable.
